  1. Good work, I was just about to ask the same questions as Jim.
  2. Great work once again Krispy, that's a cracking haul.
  3. Yeah, everything I do in the Cooks is C&R, but I've seen guys around the likes of Tempe keeping fish- surely they must see the amount of crap in that river and have second thoughts? I wish the water was cleaner- steady source of fresh fish 10 mins from home, rather than having to trek out east like today!
  4. Thanks gents. Just an observation I've made over the last few sessions in that particular stretch: casting upstream and hopping lures down towards them in the current seems to work best at the mo, their instinct is to hit the lure and then travel against the water flow, which slows them down and makes them expend more energy. If they do turn and follow the current their instinct seems to be to head in towards the edge of the river, so you need a tight drag to keep them out of snags.
  5. That's an absolute hulk of a bream, congrats on the new PB! Looking forward to seeing what else you guys catch.
  6. Good work, the Cooks has been pretty productive lately.
  7. Had a good session this afternoon on the run-in in the Cooks. Plenty of trevally about at the moment putting up a decent fight. I had 6 in total, ranging from low 30s to one 47 cm specimen plus a little bream and tailor. Everything caught on the old faithful Z-man grubz. Set up at one of the bridges later for something bigger, one take on the bottom from a flatty, but all I got apart from that was snags and lost tackle.

    Sashimi!

Thanks for posting an interesting topic, Camo. It's nice to hear everyone's feedback. Nowadays I always bleed, gill and gut any catch for the table and never wash it in tap water (thank you to Steve for that one), the most I do is give it a quick rinse in the net in the place where I caught it and dry it off, then into a coolbox with ice blocks. Finally, I clean it with dry kitchen paper when I get home and (more often than not) make a mess of the filleting. I've yet to try any catch as sashimi, but I'm really keen to give the next legal trev caught out east a shot. Just wondering: I know oily pelagic fish tend to be used more often as sashimi, but is there a reason estuary species like bream, flathead and whiting aren't? Does it have something to do with the oil content of the flesh?
  9. That's interesting, I guess it depends on the system as I've tried drifting just about everything near them (bait and lure) at a number of spots in the harbour and they just turn their noses up. Any time I've had one on a lure it's been a complete surprise.
  10. Well done W4z, a luderick on a Z-man doesn't happen too often. Was it a motor oil grub by any chance? I often wonder if the blackfish confuse them for weed because of the colour, or whether they're just really hungry.
  11. Great work as always Krispy. I bet that king was a lot of fun on the light gear. I need to get me a few of these sugapens everyone keeps mentioning.
  12. Well done on getting a couple of bream. There are lots of fish in the Cooks at the mo, you see schools of big mullet everywhere, but there are plenty of tailor and trevs about too. It's a real shame about the rubbish on the river though, so much crap left lying around on the banks.
  13. Well done on getting a couple of fish mate, those trevs are a lot of fun.
  14. How about that for a first attempt?! Epic dude, congratulations!
  15. I was back this afternoon. Fished a couple of hours either side of the high tide and the fish were really hungry- trevs everywhere: I landed a couple and pulled the hook on twice as many. Few bream, tailor and lots of biddies about too, but still no jew On the plus side, I managed a day without catching a flattie (was at Iron Cove yesterday and all I caught were heaps of 40 cm models, even on the bigger lures).
  16. Hey mate, sorry- I'm on breakfast duty with the girlfriend's mum this morning, but I'm hoping to get out later for the afternoon high tide.
  17. Good haul! That's some tasty eating right there.
  18. Hey Raiders, Had a walk along the Cooks this morning. The idea was to fish for whatever til the high tide and then change up and try yet again for my first mulloway (I've had a bash every weekend for the last 6 weeks or so without any joy). First up, hooked a decent trev, but pulled the hook just as I was about to lift it onto the bank. Then got a reasonable tailor in the mid 30s and a couple of little flatties, before pulling the hook on another trev. That was followed by another legal tailor and a little tarwhine (I think anyway, maybe someone can verify), which was a first for me on a lure. All fish taken on motor oil and bloodworm Zmans. Some bait fishos had left line, empty prawn and chicken packets, a tub of dried parmesan (!), traces and hooks all over one of the outcrops, so that got put in the bin (the Cooks has enough crap in it as it is!) Then about lunch time I put on the heavier leader and a mullet profile lure on a 1/4 jighead and started working a few of the rock walls, but only managed another couple of little flatties. Still no jewy love, but a gorgeous day for a walk and a fish nonetheless. I'll be out again tomorrow and possibly Monday, so hope to have something more exciting to report in the next couple of days. Cheers, Adam
  19. Ling is used as a substitute for cod and haddock in some chippies back in the UK, supposed to be pretty good. Can't vouch for the Aussie version though.
  20. Great job once again Krispy, that freezer of yours must be chockablock full of kingies by now!
  21. Looking awkward?! I wouldn't worry, some of us manage that on every trip Well done for getting out and at 'em Jim. I'm sure the fight with the salmon on fly was fun even though there were a few mishaps. What size do you reckon the fish went at?
  22. Great work gents, didn't take you guys very long to master the art after you both got your firsts, I'm thoroughly jealous and I reckon a lot of other raiders out there are too! And you lucky chaps have another week of school holidays to go out chasing them!
  23. Happy Birthday Scratchie! Now go catch yourself a big fat Tassie trout
