  1. Funny, never read of anyone doing this on the forums. I'll give it a go some time and let you know how I fare!
  2. Has anyone tried to just drop a jig straight down the pylons they're standing on to catch squid? Can they live on a pylon? I've read they prefer sandy areas. Was walking around one today and noticed how much kelp is around there, not sure if the action of the jig would be very good just going up and down though
  3. Cheers. Reason for mono is cos my dad prefers it. Don't think the area I'm fishing is too rough though. Haven't caught anything big enough there to test it to be honest!
  4. Marshie good point.. Don't think I do. How do you guys match line poundage to rod weight?
  5. What would you recommend as a safer poundage?
  6. I have 40lb or 80lb black magic leader which I plan to use. Probably should be enough I reckon Cheers
  7. I've got 2 spools for a 6500 baitfeeder rod. My dad prefers to use mono so I want to spool up with one mono, but i've read everything from 20lb mono to 80lb braid. We're not targeting one metre monsters. Just live baiting or soaking a bait around middle head. What is a good strength of mono to use? I'll probably spool up the with 40lb braid The reels max drag pressure is rated 22lb. It's said to hold 292m of 20lb mono Cheers
  8. A bait runner will have tension anyway, just by the friction between water and x metres of line. So you're saying that bait runner is good for everything except maybe trevs?
  9. Could've taken a bite spat it out by the time your strike gets to it though
  10. Geez what berley are you using for a pre work sesh? Just bread so it doesn't smell?
  11. Sorry mate but that last sentence makes no sense.. The bait is with the fish that just swam off with it.
  12. I guess that's my question. Does every fish swim off with the bait? Because if it doesnt the bait runner is pretty useless, if anything it'll mask bites
  13. Just wondering what you guys think of bait feeder / runner reels? The ones where there is a light drag setting and a heavier drag setting which you can flick to. Is it superior to setting the hook yourself? One issue I have is, will this only be good for larger fish? I assume that non aggressive fish might just chomp at it as opposed to taking off with it? As in, it might work for a kingfish that hits it aggressively because its a fish that swallows others in 1 or 2 bits. But an average size tailor, salmon, trev etc isn't going to behave the same way. I'm bait fishing off the rocks in the harbour. Sometimes with ganged pilchards, other times with livies under a float. I'm tossing up between a bait runner or a lighter rod. Not sure what will make the biggest difference to catch rate Cheers
  14. didnt end up heading out today. still looked like a horrible day and i figure there needs to be a bit of sun to warm up the water to get the fish moving. might give it a crack tomorrow, barometer should still be rising then
  15. I'm not convinced more science can't be applied to fishing.. Though there is an element of fortune definitely. My spot has been pretty empty recently. Much cleaner thank God but maybe everyone else got the memo. It's been real quiet the last few trips
  16. Do you find the fishing almanac reliable? Which one do you use? It doesn't work well for me.. Very hit and miss. I usually go off tides but recently it doesn't seem to be enough
  17. Theres been a consistent drop in pressure over the last few days. I went out on Saturday late arvo to have a go and it was absolutely dead. However looking at the forecast there is a dramatic increase in pressure today and tomorrow. http://www.worldweatheronline.com/Sydney-15day-weather-chart/New-South-Wales/AU.aspx Going off some past threads about the topic, it would seem that tomorrow would be an awesome time to fish. Is this correct? It looks like there are gonna be 25knot winds tomorrow though. But dramatic changes in barometric pressure = weather changes = not calm. By the time the winds drop to below 15knots the pressure is steadying and I assume the fish less active? Can anyone shed some light on the matter before I go punish myself in 25 knot winds + rain for 4 hours? Cheers!
  18. How do you attach the bread securely to the hook? My bread just flings off. If i squeeze it too much it tends to get brittle. Thanks!
  19. Yeah fair enough. Would yakka be around areas with mostly large rocks and not much weed? I had a place like that which mostly produced baby bream and snapper
  20. Thanks! I seem to have found a place that will produce 2 large yakkas most times I go. Is that an indication that there are more around? I can never seem to best two. I will try with some DIY burley bombs and see if I fare any better. I'll try fishing deeper also, been getting way too much sweep
  21. Hi Guys I've been having a hit and miss time getting yakkas recently. Can you burley them up from pretty much anywhere along the harbour if you have some decent burley and bit of weed/rocks around? What if its only large rocks without much weed? I'm not sure if ive been unlucky or have been going to the wrong places entirely! Cheers
