  1. Hey mate I have had a few pairs of spike boots and they are really comfortable. I normally wear a pair of explorer socks in them.

The spikes do wear really quickly so have bought some Life & Sports chain spikes. They go over the boots and are awesome. I where my boots to where I want to go and then put on the spikes for fishing. Plenty of grip and really secure.

    Cheers Stu

  2. For lures and stickbaits, I use a 50lb flouro , to 40lb braid, then i hope nothing bigger than around 10-11 kg grabs it, because its shallow and snaggy where i fish.

For live baiting, i use 150lb leader , and i thought maybe it was costing me fish being too heavy, so i switched to 80lb for a few months, and didnt notice any real difference in the fish size or numbers that i caught. The 80lb i bought is stiff ugly stuff thats very hard to tie a knot in, so i went back to 150lb.

I think your mate is right in using 100lb leader , he has just already learned his lesson from a good fish, thats all.

Guys that are using 6lb to 10lb line for land based kings arent serious fishos, they are the guys that watched ifish, and decided that they could do it too, and they are happy catching undersize fish. Set your sights a little higher than that.

Try telling that to Krispy he smashes the kings on 10lb in the Harbour.

  3. Well done R&B. that's a huge bream and a worthy entrant for cotm! Congrats :)

    Cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks Scratchie. I checked the requirements before posting. Did not think I would get many chances to have a go at it.

    Tight lines Stu

  4. Well done on that monster!

My catch phrase when fishing is "If I get one bream over 40 I'm Happy". This happens about one in every twenty fishing trips when targeting them for me hahaha!

Enjoy the feed mate nothing beat's sitting down to a well earned monster bream!

Thanks Rex. Your average is about right normally I get a few good size ones in this area my mate always gets the big ones. He was not there this time so I took his spot. He is not getting out back after this.

  5. That's a fantastic bream, great work and great perseverance!

Cheers mate it was pretty wild out there on this day. This was caught just after low tide after that it was getting too hairy to fish.

  6. Stonker mate, well done.

You could get on the records scoreboard with that.

    Nice fish.

Thanks Ryder hooked him up in the wash about 3m from the rocks in front of me.

  7. Hi guys headed out Saturday arvo for a spin off the rocks. was not confident after all the rain but had to go fishing. Took along the bream gear just in case I had no luck spinning.

To cut along story short after two hours of throwing spinners with no hits and no follows decided the spinning was not good!!!!!!

Changed across to chase some bream and there were lots of small nibblers around but this fella decided he liked my pillie tail.

At 46 cm this is my PB bream so was stoked.

  8. Hey fella I use the Berkeley big game on all my reels now that I use for fishing around the rocks handles it pretty good. I don't use Alveys though. Has good knot strength and abrasion resistance as well and appears to have less stretch. If you do a search you can get some good prices on it. I mainly buy the 6, 8 & 10 kg lines. I used to use the Trilene but was not impressed, struggled with knots breaking even with plenty of spit.

Agree with Rex always wash the gear down.

  9. Great work Cait. I caught my first legal scalper earlier this year i was so stoked.

    I have a t-shirt it says

    Fishing keeps me sane.

It sure does, my wife still does not get what I get out of fishing.

  10. Hi There

Just a word of warning with the sand spikes, I have lost a rod, reel & very big fish / shark the last time I used a sand spike with slab baits off the beach. Depending on how compact the sand is (Blacksmiths to Redhead where I'm from is fairly loose) the spike can be dragged down towards the sand and even bent, releasing the rod.

May be better investing in some larger diameter pipe. It can be a pain to dig into the sand however you can drill holes through the side half way down, stick a tent peg (or whatever is handy) through it and use it like a pogo stick to set it in the sand. I also prefer the pipes as they have no give once the fish strikes so if your rod is un-attended the hook is usually set for you.

Regarding the rod anything over 10kg should handle jew and the length (12ft+) will allow you to maneuver them in with the waves.

    Best of luck!

Yeah agree Rex. Would never use just the sand spike of the rod. Have even had rods dragged over and into the water while using the tubes. Luckily have not lost any rods yet but been close.

  11. Ive got a Snyder glass fish striker mt8144 12'8" and a live fibre champion trophy 13'........teamed up with 2 daiwa saltiga surf 6000 reels, one has 50lb braid the other has 30lb mono. I had a sand spike put on the live fibre, the snyder has one already. Not that it matters really since i place them both in 50mm tubes at the beach. Would land way bigger fish than I have with them

I am the same I use 50mm tubes as well to dig into the sand. Trouble is the prevail end piece is huge and does not fit into the tube. May have to a convert to sand spike.

  12. Hi pirate I agree with the other guys may be a bad batch. Also check your gear.

Unless fishing at night I only use 6kg mono main line (250m) with a 30lb bottom rig. If fishing braid then 10lb with 3m of 15 or 20lb Flouro. At night I have a big rod out with 15kg mono or braid with a 40lb Flouro leader and 40 or 50lb rig. Still use the smaller outfits though for the smaller fish. Keeps the table full will still having fun.

Have caught monster tailor salmon and small sharks on this setup. Only time I get into trouble is when the tailor bite past the hook on single hooks not a problem on ganged hooks. Havn't meet a Tailor than can bite through a ganged 3/0 hook yet :).

    Cheers Stu

  13. Hey mate if you are using big baits try the Penn Prevail 12-20kg only thing is it does not have a sand spike. Sensor surf is also good and can be a good all round rod for off the rocks as well.
