Great report mate. I am sure the will be plenty of more outings to come.
At least Finn didnt break you favorite rod on his first outting like my son did. At least I had an excuse to buy a new rod. .... Not that I need one

I tend to use suicide hooks 1-2-or 3/0 pending hook size as they vary by brand. Depends on bait size too hide as much of the bait as possible

Just to add I use 6kg mono line most of the time to a 20or30 lb rig. I tie the line direct to a swivel. Have tried braid off the surf but to many knots in the wash.
At night i change to 15 kg as you don't know what you are going to get

Agree find the gutter is the most important and watch which way the tide is running into it and fish near the entry and burley hard.
I setup a variety of baits on different rigs to see what is about but always setup a ganged pilchard and move it around a bit. If no crabs about then let it sit they will find it.
If I can get fresh yakkas I use them otherwise I always keep a couple of them in the freezer and slab the side out of them.
Early morning or late arvo prefer rising tide but have caught heaps going low it appears to concentrate them and the bait options sometimes.
Otherwise just enjoy being there.
Tight lines

Hey man I have lost to many fish due to dumb stuff. I now always replace my flouro leader after a fishing session now even to the point I cut off when packing up.
I then re do everything at home and test all my knots if I don't like even the look of it I cut it off and start again.
I am with the uni knot, some say to add a lock to it but I find this creates issues.
Keep it simple and practice practice practice

Bloody kookaburra took my son's sausage roll as he was putting it in his mouth. Scratched the side of his face with his claws.
Caught a seagull once had a hook in its gob and 5 metres of line. Was flying around like a kite until I got it close enough to hold it and pull the hook heres the kicker I attracted it on cheezels.

Hi Guys after a quick trip to see my AFL club U15 team get beaten in the grand final... always next year. I decided to take my two youngest boys for a bit of a fish in the harbour (landbased).
Arrived at our spot about half an hour before high tide so started putting plenty of burley in the water (I knew that chook food was handy for something else) and re-rigged the rods for floating in the burley trail.
First strike was on a medium size rig with 6kg line, don't know what it was but it was not stopping took most of the spool before I put some pressure on it to try and turn it and then the line gave way, toothy marks all over the line and the line was shredded so must have been dragging through the rocks as well. The bite was on a pilchard tail drifting in the current
Next up was my middle sons line takes a hit and after a reasonable battle we identified a bream and a ripper, as he only had 6lb line I had to net it, after getting it out the fish went 38.5cm, definite PB for him. He had white bait on with a tiny sinker running down to the hook.
Next my youngest gets a hit and up comes a very pretty looking small snapper just under size, so back he goes.
He then gets another bite and brings up a small bream around 30cm, that makes 2 and a good feed for tommorrow night
My middle son again gets a taptaptap and out comes a small flounder.
The day was starting to get a little long and a little cold, we had a few more hits but nothing else to fill the bucket and the big line with a garfish drifting in the current did not get touched, maybe next time.
Note to self plenty of burley and fish as light as possible.

For me the following are ones I have caught and like as sashimi.
1. Trevally
2. Kingy
3. Bonito
4. Snapper
Favourite though is YFT or any tuna
Not sure I could do Aussie Salmon raw....maybe pickled tailor rollmops style might work. Might try that next time nice and oily.

Couple of real nice trevs there Krispy. Make great Sashimi don't they and the leftovers cook up well with a little olive oil lemon juice and salt and pepper. Tried last weekend for doughnuts......

I buy multiple spools for reels so that I can change quickly to different line classes specially with fine braid it gets a little confusing. I etch on the spool so I can tell what it is. Saves having to remember to much detail.

Decided to get out by my self on Saturday arvo for a little rock fishing. As soon as I saw the water I knew it was going to be a tough day. Crystal Clear and no wash at all. Spun for about an hour to no avail and then the around a few garfish still nothing. Let the garfish sink still nothing.
Changed tack and chased some bream in around the rocks caught lots of small rock cod and other nuisance fish but not much else.
It was actually that calm and warm that I felt like jumping in for a swim.
The day ended with zip edible fish for me but it was a great afternoon refining a few techniques.

Great little catch mate. Yes Trev sashimi is mighty nice a favourite of mine, nice solid flesh.

Sounds like a nice day out though. Can't be fresh flathead filets for taste.
