  1. Had not been to the beach for a while so decided before the arctic chill hit would go out Saturday arvo.
My middle son at the last minute decided he wanted to come along as well.
After getting to the beach and seeing that all the good holes were full of surfers decided to walk up the beach a little too an area that had a sand bank and then a drop off.
After setting up my son first I started to get the other rods sorted when he said dad I have a bite and was winding like mad. I was a little surprised at first but he landed a small trevally.
He kept on getting lots of small bites and then got whacked, he did the right thing and hit it and started to wind but it had gone.
Things slowed down a bit so I decide to throw a metal around and third cast caught a herring my first off the beach on a metal.
Checked all the lines re baited and cast them back in then whack my son gets a bit hit again and this time he was on and he was winding his little heart out. Thought that he had lost it in the wave but it took pressure up again and went for another run.
He finally beached it and that smile was gold, his first big sambo 62cm and 2.2kg. I reckon he will be hooked on fishing for life now.
We stayed to just after dark and caught another couple of small ones and another good size sambo that went back.
What a great day out. At least one son has my passion for fishing.

  2. Had a great day out with my three boys on the Hawkesbury today.

Nothing edible but the boys had great fun in beteween the AFL games.

2 small sting rays, 2 nappie rash tailor, a morey eel and lots of soldier crabs.

I even received a bit of sun burn.

  3. Hey I find it amusing. The poor old carp if it tasted better we would love it like the other introduced species like trout and Redfin that taste good. Norwest lake is also full of carp and the kids love catching them. 10lb fish on 6lb line how better to teach the kids about fishing in a safe environment. I was teaching the kids how to kill them humanely and some do gooder gave me heaps in front of the kids. I politely told him to go away. So now we do 50 50 some go back so in the bin.

  4. Hey mate that is a great fish on light gear. I broke my teeth on carp on light gear it taught me so much about knowing when to back it off and when to let them run. Teaches you how to fish. I have been teaching my boys how to catch carp they love it. I have also used them to show the boys how to kill the fish as humanly as possible. Now they know when we catch other fish what to do.

Don't care what fish they are if they fight and you see them ripping through the water pulling line you can't beat it. Yeah Hahhhh

  5. We had been having rat issues due to the chooks and the chook food, we also back onto a reserve. Went into the shed about 6 months ago and there was a red belly sitting there with a lump in the middle, no more rat problem. But does there poop stink. He Took off pretty quick luckily so far he has not come back.

  6. Hey fella I am a sparkie from way back. Do you know what they put on cranes to pickup from the live rails. Yep carbon brushes. No better conductor, maybe have a glass rod as a backup. They are insulated but not against lightening......lol

  7. Hey guys do you have any worries with air knots, I am struggling with the lighter braids when casting off the rocks and beach. I basically run about 1-1.5M of flouro at the end and connect direct to the metals. (I also learnt that the snap swivel changes the action) Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? I don't have any issues with the heavier braid 20 & 30lb with 40gram slugs up. Just the lighter 10lb with all different rods. I use power pro braid.

  8. Hi Guys agree with Crossfire63. Just to add I have had some great results at lower tides as it concentrates the fish better. Just depends what I am chasing. The swell will also depend if you have sand bars good sand bars lots of structure not so much swell needed. If they are breaking in front of you then fish just at the back of the break with a loose line. Good luck, by the way any time out there is good time you always learn

  9. Had a mate that no matter what would always have something to do when we hit dock side. Same bloke always had to go somewhere when it was his shout.....

Great idea but if you have to remind them they are not worth taking out again...

  10. Mate just depends on when you are going to fish, during the day I fish with 4000 series reels ABU Soron STX with 6kg mono and 30 lb leader with 12 ft rods 8-12kg allows you to cast further when the gutters are out a bit and allows you to put a bit of grunt in for the bigger fish like salmon. Don't like light braid off the surf, keeps knotting up with the wash. Also the light gear allows me to move around a bit to find the fish.

At night I fish the same rods with 6000 reels with 30lb braid or mono as well as a heavier old favourite snider 13ft glass rod with a 7000 ABU and 15 kg mono, overheads are a nightmare to cast at night with braid. I use IGFA rated monos as they are thinner with less memory, casts well. Good luck with the choices
