  3. Nice fish mate, I bet that red fish tasted fantastic, and the cobes would have been a great battle. Good job on posting the pictures your doing better than I have so far, I haven't put up any.... come to think of it I don't have a camera either.

Had a guy down at the Gong do my marlin great colour work and eyes I think his name was Dave Goodger I''l check and try to find his number reasonably priced too
  5. Gday Mark's Downriggers are used to accurately put a bait at the depth in the water column the target fish are sitting. Reading the depth the fish are at off the sounder you drop the bomb, which is a large weight attached to a clip that your line runs through, down to approx that depth. The clip is like an outrigger clip that releases on fish strike allowing you to play the fish. The bomb is dropped via a cable that is generally marked so you can guage the depth.
  6. Save me a spot josh, I'll be down for a look, great breaming around there
  7. Dave, on the west bank over the wall past the camping park turn right into either bay try the points for lure flicking, I used to cast an arc of five casts, however I found it effective to fire some deep as well. Just before the wall turn right into a dead end road, there is a little bay with no trees great for the fly. Just over the hill coming in from lithgow turn right into (____ mitchell drive ??) Follow to end (dirt) to the left there are some deep walls great for bait fishing or spinnerbaits Colours orange red pink black brown Its only five minutes from the GWhighway turnoff at the first garage (the italian makes a great $3.00 Hamburger ) coming into lithgow. Easy reconaissance mission. And the absolute most important ingredient to fishing lake lyell...... Don't forget the aerogard.
  8. Thanks very much guys, forgot to mention it's stomach was completely empty, mine is now full. by the way I love reading your posts. The Rooster
  9. Hit lake lyell about midday in the tinny I bought off Thunder a couple of weeks ago. picked up an 800gm Rainbow towing small black and red tassie devils. He put on a great performance once he spotted the boat. I only had 45 minutes of water time to test the boat and setup. Trolled the edges and drop offs where I usually score for no hits and was mucking around with the engine and felt how warm the water was. So zig zagged and sounded for structure over the old drowned township in deeper cooler water when he hit. He's roasting nicely now in a coating of butter and toasted almonds and is going to be served with a hollandaise sauce.

  11. Mate, I have learnt heaps from you and can suggest a couple of things As was suggested by captain swordy, time on the water. Establish a connection with some old timers, I used to drool at their boats at the wharves and offer to carry their equipment back to their car, help wash down their boats etc. after a couple of weeks their suspicions about you trying to get a free ride led to deck handing every now and then (always unpaid - maybe a few fish), and then I really started to learn and work. I targetted particular people and was open and honest about what I was doing, old blokes love to talk, and I loved to listen. They always caught fish, they would feel the conditions on the way out and target a particular species because of the way the palm trees were moving earlier that morning. That was fifteen or twenty years ago, now I struggle to tie knots. If you can't afford a charter every second week think outside the square . . . may the force be with you Derek
  12. Someone mentioned plenty of squid around the western back edge of the joey and Scotland island, I did notice a lack of southern calamari at the fish markets this morning (fresh water??) Western edge in the morning for fish, careel, the wrecks
  13. Thats a great Idea Bob, so much damage chipping untangling time and money saved, and Bob what a lovely set of legs you have there mate.
  14. Spot on Pelican, I am not voteing this year the bloody government always wins anyway... D.
  15. Hi Rocky..... Exciting stuff mate January is in season Troll 4-6 knots (walking pace) unless they are aggressively feeding you can jump up to 8 - 10 Variety of lures Jet heads etc Varying colours and sizes depending on what baits are around out there, pink and black or blue and white, usually running with the swell. in the long run you are going to save a lot of money by doing at least one pro guide and if port stephens is the go check out site sponsors Ross and glen Hunter I think I am going to call them myself I need my arms stretched and a sore back for three days and a grin that lasts a week
  16. I need a cold shower after reading this, what a turn on!!! I now know why I never bothered to learn anything at school, It's the fishing thats important not all that other stuff. Thanks
  17. sorry to go off track, pelican I am down there semi regularly ( fish markets ) within the next seven days with a ute sing out if you need the job done
  18. I try to freeze 1 to 2 kilo Balls of Fish offcuts when filleting fresh fish (when succesful) and wrap in two shopping bags for ease of storage and handling and keeping beers cold. Try chook pellets, tuna oil, stale bread and fish offcuts. I find from the beach it disperses quickly over a shorter period of time so more quantity is needed. Wish I was there.
  19. Try a potato sack with a cord attached, freeze the burley into a 1 to 2 kilo block or throw a brick in the sack to prevent it getting thrown around to much and then a stake of at least a foot. If it becomes a pain in the neck due to wave action, don't bother with the burly usually the wave action stirs up enough to keep them excited.
  20. Try Towing smallish bright lures along weed lines, warmer temperature breaks or current changes until you find any floating debris which they tend to school under, throw out a couple of cubes and a couple of cubes on a 5.0 hook, once you hook one keep him on until you hook another up, pull in the first then bleed and ice him. Keep one on and you will hold the school much longer. Lob a couple of medium livies out the back of the school for the bulls.
  21. I was just in the same situation with a mates boat, and the boats performance and fuel efficiency after a month in the water was very ordinary. I think it is about $19 (could be way off the mark) per foot to anti fowl professionally plus mooring fees etc Or pull it out once or twice a year and re-do it yourself if you dont mind shredded knuckles for a couple of days. When you weigh up the costings and time consumption, I think it is the way to go On anodes, which i know nothing about I remember reading a thread on this site about a year and a half ago, very educational ... Merry scraping
  22. Mate, One of my favorite flatty spots is fishermans beach towards cowan, cast to the base of the rocks on the left as you are looking at the beach two to eight metres out, 5 to 30 Metres off the beach Sometimes you need a bit of weight to get the baits down through the taylor.. Paternoster Flat sandy bottom minimal structure. Anchor 20 to 30 metres out and drift the boat back to shore and stretch your legs on the beach, set up the barby and open another beer..... P.S. please don't tell anyone else...
  23. My blood pressure just shot up a few notches, Thanks Ross !!!
