  1. make sure you double pass the the braid through the original loop of leader when you start the knot I had the same issue when starting with braid and fluro and this seemed t fix it another thing is to avoid whip casting the sudden crack of pressure can seperate even the best tied knots dont overshorten your tags leave a couple of mm and as preiously stated shorten your leader any catch while casting and a lure of that weight will sail off into the unknown
  2. Black spot cod they have become quite common by-catch over the last 2 years
  3. months with the letter R summer being the most productive
  4. Finally cracked a couple of fish, have had very limited fishing the last coupe of weeks but today managed some fish on sx40's and cranka crabs The change in weather and more favorable rostering will hopefully bring some better fishing in the coming weeks Dave
  5. don't skimp on the bait, put lots of bait in your pots and if you have a strong stomach eel is excellent bait but absolutely rank after 24 hours in the water
  6. landbased kings are completely different to boat based in a boat you want to muscle them up off the reef and steer them to open water for landing, landbased you need to bring them up to the structure to land them so the trick is to not upset them too much fish a light drag about what you would set for an average bream drag let them run, I have landed kingies on bream gear landbased (as by-catch) and its just a matter of letting them run themselves out of energy, don't be afraid to let them go I've had one run nearly 80m at least three times before giving up, but the second you tighten up and try and muscle them they will bury you in an instant I am not an expert on the topic most of my kingies (biggest 65cm) have come as by-catch whilst bream spinning with 6lb braid and 8lb leader if I was to seriously target them (small models) I would go 250-300m of 15lb braid with 20lb fluorocarbon leader hope this helps Dave
  7. cast them up against pylons and let them sink down just like a crab thats fallen off either are good
  8. Estuary spinning First thing you will need is a decent combo in the 2-4kg range loaded up with some 6-8lb braid and some 8-10lb flurocarbon leader my go to hardbodies are ecogear sx40 zerek tango shad 50mm atomic hards shad black magic bmax strikepro pygmy Remember lure fishing isn't just casting a lure and catching fish consistently catching fish on lures takes lots of trial and error A good place to start is areas where you know there are loads of flathead and tailor these are good targets to refine your techniques hope this helps Dave
  9. I feel your pain Neil I haven't caught a fish in 3 sessions and to rub salt in I dropped a jack this evening
  10. beautiful perch mate nice work
  11. with the crabs my favorite is the vampire crab and the fiddler go for something natural looking in the sx40's
  12. good video, just a suggestion try going a bit lighter on the drag especially with flatties and you pull the hooks as often
  13. A couple of lures worth adding Cranka crabs in the light and heavy weight, cast them up against structure like oyster racks and bridge pylons and let them sink down they can really be a turning point during a slow day Ecogear sx40 and strikepro pygmy are my other go to bream lures especially around the flats and structure like rock walls and fallen trees try and think outside the box the bream will be seeing a lot of lures and techniques so try and do something different good luck Dave
  14. The opportunity arose to head over to Ebor for another crack at some trout. The creek was looking awesome as ever and the fish didn't disapoint. The action started straight away with a decent rainbow coming from my second cast Just kept working my way up the creek casting the runs for more rainbows They were really aggressive coming in thick and fast no real monsters but still good fun I came up to one of the best pools on the creek. I was nearly dying from anticipation when my cast hit the water and was shocked when all I produced was a small rainbow. Knowing there had to be another fish in the pool I kept casting and casting and when I was about to give up the lure was taken the fish spent more time in the air than the water and I soon realised this was a brown The property owner only ever did one stocking of browns so they are not a very common catch in the area. Satisfied I moved up to the next run and on again and surprisingly to another brown Worked my way along most of the creek for plenty more rainbows and anther brown After running out of daylight called it a day had a quick fish in the morning for another couple of fish before departing. The final tally was 38 trout caught and released. Heading home decided to pull into the nymboida for a cast coming from the high of the trout fishing the nymboida was very very slow. After an hour of the toughest bush bashing aong the river Ive ever done and seeing loads of footprints suggesting fisherman had been present very recently I was reserved to the fact I was to catch nothing. I spotted a shallow section of rocks with a bit of a pool right against the bank I thought no one would bother putting a cast in there so I lobbed the spinnerbait up into the pool and a cod came flying out of no where and smashed it after a hell of a tussle out came a beautiful 55cm eastern cod he made the slogging through the bush worth every minute That was it for the trip the trout were taken on a Strikepro "baby archback" and the cod on a TT vortex spinnerbait thanks for reading Dave
  15. Thanks Neil, Debbie stopped up in the Northern Rivers about 250km north of me, I feel for the poor buggers in Lismore hopefully they get back up and running again soon The stickbaits are "Yakamito" intruder, there are plenty of different brands on the market, definitely worth a shot
  16. With the rain finally settled it was time to have a crack at some fish. The water is still off colour but full of baitfish. Started off with working pylons with cranka crabs and on the second pylon the line gave a familiar twitch a quick strike and I was onto a reasonable bream a good start to the session coupe of pylons further along the crab was smashed on the drop and took off with the current after a tussle out came a slightly better bream further along the pylons get deeper with more current switched the light crab to the heavy, put a cast right up against the pylon as it reached the bottom a fish casually picked it up and swam off, it was only when it felt the weight that I realized this was a much better fish after a nervous fight steering the fish around the pylons a solid bream came out with no more pylons to cast at it was time for a change in tactics, walk the flats casting hardbodies. Started off with a sinking "Daiwa Yonagi" with almost immediate success After many casts with nothing else I decided to try something new. I recently bought some sinking stickbaits after a bit of trial and error the fish started coming no monsters but enough to keep me entertained just worked the stickbaits similar to a soft plastic, a few erratic twitches followed by a pause letting it sink back to the bottom, the flathead found them irresistible, cheers for reading Dave
  17. just be aware the cormorants are likely to make short work of any mullet you stock in the dam
  18. some bream from the dirty water gotta love those blue lips
  19. have caught snapper on herring, pike are the best bait they are usually around the herring
  20. just an update we had 120mm of rain overnight the river is likely to be up gonna go for a spin over there tomorrow
  21. the macleay is running clear at the moment, despite all the rain the rivers were so low the rain has only made them flow there are loads of mackerel being caught the last few weeks just b warned the bar will be treacherous with the bad weather hopefully it will settle down by the time your up here
  22. cast them up against a bridge pylon and let them sink down imitating a crab thats fallen off,
  23. I have finally got my bream mojo back, started off a few days ago spinning the Nambucca river, first up loads of small tailor almost in plague proportions. Got the lure right up inot a shallow edge out of reach of the tailor and straight on to a better fish which turned out to be a reasonable flathead. Kept working the shallow rocky water and the bream started coming not overly big but still bream Yesterday headed over to the Macleay, just working my way along a footbridge casting a cranka crab up against the pylons and was rewarded with bream including better quality fish spotted a school of bream following a stingray so put a cast in the middle of them and was on straight away Thats it for fishing the next few days hopefully with the rain the fishing will keep improving cheers for reading Dave
  24. dunno if this helps but I used to catch them on a blackfish rig baited with prawn and also on a bait jig with bait on the hooks the bait only needs to be small as previously stated Dave
