  1. I am in no way trying to be offensive, but I think your overthinking it, your research and structured Q and A is genuinely impressive, I would say try just winging it, remember the fish see hundreds of lures presented almost exactly the same way so try something new it might not work but then it might, I still get doughnuts but thats part of the fishing experience I agree with the earlier comment targeting bream when your starting out lure fishing is aiming for frustration flathead are definetly a good starting point good luck look forward to seeing your captures Dave
  2. November should see some kingies around, you would probably be better live baiting around the breakwall for jewies and possibly jacks or cobia
  3. the week started fairly slow with my roster not overly kind for the sake of fishing but the moses perch have made an appearance to keep me entertained then on friday a much anticipated fishing trip with one of my workmates out on his boat. We started out casting around some old oyster racks and second cast we were both onto reasonable bream As we continued along some more oyster racks I decided to live a little and change from hardbodies (my absolute favourite style of fishing) and cast small soft plastics for bream, after a shile i was getting some small fish then the lure was nailed on the drop after a solid tussle a nice 32cm bream came up got a couple more bream casint the edges then we came to a creek entrance with scattered weed beds and first cast I was on straight away it was different and out came a decent (and very tasty) whiting finished off the session casting some fallen trees landing some small GT's and big eyes ended up landing weel over 20 fish between us and a nice variety of species lures used were "squidgy wrigglers" and "zerek tango shads" thanks for reading Dave
  4. I went back and the jacks must have been insulted first cast a 50cm+ fish came up and ate my sx40 right in front of me and off into the abyss, next cast a 45cm approx specie did the same thing nothing like $40 in 2 casts tonight the 6kg comes out to atleast try and even the odds
  5. I'm just about to start the same quest, I intend to use freshwater eel for bait, if you search fishing for bullsharks on google they have some good info
  6. start in an area you have caught flathead before, then start with soft plastics in the 3-4 inch range (squidgies, gulps, zmans there all good), a 1/8oz jighead is generally a good stating size but you may need to go a little heavier, then hop the plastic accross the bottom, flathead are suckers for some aggressive movement most hits will come on the drop and then the main thing is to keep at it good luck Dave
  7. he took an absolute screamer of a run and ran well and truly into the stones, I only had about 20cm of a 3m leader that hadn't been damaged by rocks
  8. I have been working on a jack for some weeks now and after countless amounts of casts and trialing different retrieves and lures I finally caught one of the devils, he came from about 20cm of water on a slow rolled zerek tango shad at 34cm not a monster but still very satisfying, he was rleased after some quick photos next challenge is a 50cm model thanks to all the raiders who gave me tips it certainly helped Dave
  9. I used to catch them any time of the year, used to keep them in fish tanks and there is no real pattern to their molting habits
  10. after many many attempts with the closest being a busted treble from a enormous red flash (which almost buried me around a pylon), tonight I had some casts and was about to leave then I thought I'd try a steady roll retrieve rather than the twitch retrieve which I generally do, and unbelievably out of 20cm of water my lure gets smashed right near my feet after a solid run I managed to extract a 34cm Jack from amongst the rocks quite a task on 8lb leader, I will post some pictures up later this fish has taken a lot of time and effort but definitely worth every minute spent
  11. yes, tough and tasteless in future I would also go with the brick
  12. after a long search I'm pretty sure this is it Scaled Stargazer, Pleuroscopus pseudodorsalis. there seems to be a lot of variation in colour but the pattern seems to match as does the body shape. its night shift I have nothing better to do
  13. scope out and exit point just in case you end up having an unwanted swim, if you do end up in the water first thing to do is swim out away from the rocks I spent many years spear fishing around headlands and the most dangerous point is near the edge I have been washed up on the rocks buy a big swell fortunately I only came away with a few bruises and severely wounded pride
  14. Another posing bream he was really well coloured
  15. I have fished the Nambucca exclusively this week as the Macleay is still dirty and fresh Tough start to the week with only a couple of small flatties and a few reasonable big eye trevally to show for it. headed up to the freshwater for the start of the bass season and was greeted by hard running icy water which we quickly pulled the pin on and had a cast under a bridge on the way home for a lone bream today my luck finally changed as I made a trip up to my beloved highway tree first cast watched a cod come out smash the lure and drag it straight back under the log after some persuasion he came out the leader was so chafed from the log it was barley spider web a good reminder to always check your leader after every fish its frustrating to have $20 worth of lure swim away with a trophy fish because of a dodgy leader Then the trevally started, there were plagues of GT's starting off small but gradually getting bigger ending up with some mid 30's models good fun on bream gear The bigger trevs are a good sign spring is here hopefully the fresh will warm up and I'll have some bass pics next time cheers for reading Dave
  16. x3 on the turtleback worms 1/8oz jighead 3 twitch pause retrieve gun lure for whiting
  17. nice work, that is a awesome looking snapper
  18. I use a high colour mode on the camera, I don't do any processing afterwards depending on the situation I may take up to 10 shots at a time and then keep the best one
  19. I was going through some of my photos and thought I'd post up some of my attempts at taking some artistic type shots (this helps pass the time on night shift).
  20. fish later in the day during winter so the water has a chance to warm up, don't be afraid to go a decent sized plastic when chasing flatties especially around the drop-offs on the run out tide
  21. Had a week of short sessions mostly stopping for a cast to travelling to and from work the first session casting cranka crabs around the pylons of a small foot bridge and letting them sink just like crab would that has fallen off, on the tenth pylon the line came up tight for a nice high 20's bream Next arvo managed another short session on the way home this time casting along a rocky edge of a public park, after a few half hearted follows from small bream i notice a tail near the edge (turned out to be an eel) fired a quick stealthy cast a couple ot twitches and a bream comes flying out of nowhereand after a solid tussle out came a nice 36cm fish The next morning managed to hit my favourite tree which sits only a few metres from the highway, there was plenty of action starting with a 33cm big eye trevalley then the GT's came out to play decided to stop at some flats on the way home casting through the mangroves out on some weed beds in search of some bream after some casts with nothing suddenly I was on my first thought was what the hell is this and I was dumbfounded when a solid 38cm luderrick appeared especially when he ate a 52mm mirashad no doubt he bit it on purpose a satifying week of fishing so far thanks for reading Dave
