  1. Also curious to hear how you went? Definitely Yellas and Cod in the lower reaches around Wee Jasper as well as Redfin and Carp. There are a few trout around Micalong Ck stretch but pack the walking shoes, many miles to cover but reasonably easy going. There are plenty of rainbows and the odd brown upstream of Brindabella Station and the river is beautiful and carp free up that high. Plenty of snakes in the months with an R in them. Reliable report of a 2.8kg brown 5 years ago from this stretch.
  2. The days we fisherman dream of. Kingies off the beach is definitely something special, well done.
  3. Interested to hear how you went. There were kingies around last Tues / Wed and some big bust ups that looked like decent Tuna not far out the front of JBl
  4. Start out with with a light 7 foot rod 8 pound nylon line (preferably fluorocarbon). Number 10 long shank chemically sharpened hook or number 4 mustad circle hook with a 0 ball sinker. Simply thread sinker onto line then tie on hook with unit knot called running sinker rig. Chicken thigh fillet cut into small strips, place bait on hook by putting the point through one end once only resist temptation to thread bait onto hook. Cast into likely area preferably utilise a rod holder and leave line free to run off spool, paying attention. When line starts moving off the reel faster start reeling in your catch. Resist the urge to strike instead wait until fish is definitely on the line before reeling in. Experiment with location and observe the conditions when and where you are successful. The further you have to walk to a location the more fish you will catch. Threw in most recent catch using this method
  5. Very informative and interesting write up. We can definitely learn a lot from the way things were.
  6. Strangely enough today i got bitten by a snapper and a bream holding them while scaling them over the side of the boat. The bream hurt a bit. I think if you used Iki Jimi or wait till the fish is properly dead it wont happen.
  7. Hard to beat a session like that off the beach, very rewarding and a great feed!!
  8. I remember reading about the "Shark Men of Tathra Wharf" using freshwater eels exclusively as bait. They had sewed them up in a particular way to present them on a hook targeting XOS bronzies, tigers and ad they referred to them "white death". Pretty sure there was an article in a 70's edition of the Anglers Omnibus.
  9. Made the mistake of using the prawn scoop net as a landing net and had to cut the lure out every fish I caught leaving it full of holes. Wondering how to thread on the replacement. It appears the frame is somehow pressed onto the handle. Is there a trick to removing the head of the net from the handle without cutting anything?
  10. Anyone else noticing a distinct lack of Bonnies, kings & salmon at the moment. According to my diary this time last year fishing landbased JB I'd caught nearly 50 Bonito and around 20 salmon 5 kings but so far I have 6 bonnies and 2 salmon as well as 3 rats only. Interested to hear from other areas to give hope that they may arrive soon, cheers Toilor
  11. Awesome catch mate, inspiring me to give livebaiting a go. Go the stones!!
  12. I fish 4 or 5 days a week 2 hour sessions constantly casting and retrieving off the rocks & have just topped up after 3 months so not too bad. I don't use it on my boat outfits where distance isn't as important. Nothing again this morning but what looked to be frigates busting up and I didn't have anything small enough to tempt them.
  13. Gliss casts around 30 percent further than anything imo making it great for landbased spinning. Abrasion resistance slightly less than braid but not too bad however it deteriorates with fibers separating after 2 months fishing 4 days a week constantly casting. Deterioration doesn't effect strength much but looks terrible. Fg knot strength excellent and stuff all wind knots
  14. I'll try that next time. Nothing but 2 half hearted hits this morning
  15. Saltist 4500 and lox iridium 12ft surf 12210. It is a long rod but at full tilt has plenty of power. I'm accustomed to playing fish and letting them tire themselves out. It was suggested that the length of the rod would be a hinderance but I believe as I modify my technique and work out how hard I can go it'll do the job. Didn't want to be poling Bonnie's and salmon on a broomstick as they make up the bulk of the catch. I've been using a 12 foot wilson heritage and tss4 for 15 years so it has been a learning curve. Keen to hear what you think
  16. Been hitting the stones 4 mornings in the last week. Usual setup of 40lb gliss 30lb leader 40 gram knight got a nice suprise after thinking I'd let the lure sink to far and hooked the bottom, turned out to be a little snapper. Also got my first kingy on a soft plastic 7inch zman white flickbait 2oz jig head. Buried me on the ledge but I stayed patient and 5mins later he swam out 55cm. Seems wrong that an undersized fish should brick me on reasonably heavy gear but they just dive so hard I cant stop them. Totals for the 4 mornings are 3 Bonnies 3 kings (all under incl 25cm model) the snapper and a salmon. I clean the fish on leaving and have taken to eating hearts, livers and eggs / melts raw as shown to me by a Cook Islander, give it a try if you can stomach it. Next 4 days should be good fishing with perfect moon phase and decent weather. Pic in comment below. Cheers Toilor
  17. Thanks for the hot tip mate, now have singles ready to go but alas the kings have disappeared getting a few Bonnie's only........they ll b back though and I'll b ready
  18. I've been out last 2 mornings 5.30am til 7.30 spinning 40 grm knights fishing southern headlands of Jervis bay. 8 hits 3 bust offs 2 hook pulls 1 x 55cm landed rest dropped including approx 70cm at my feet. Bycatch of 2 bonnies and a salmon. Not having much luck bringing home a legal king but having fun trying. Doing ok hooking them but definitely need to work on landing them. 40 lb gliss 30lb leader next trip will try 60lb leader.
  19. Howdya go in sunny Canberra Neil? I lived in CBR until 12 months ago mate now I'm in Jervis Bay, back for chrissie though, watch out trout!! Behind the museum and Black mountain peninsula are Reddie hot spots. Keep moving until you find a school. I use no. 3 sized celta type (dont buy celta as they do not spin since being made in Thailand not france) with red best. Also consider Kambah Pool or Urriarra on the 'bidgee, plenty of shrimp for the bucket and loads of carp plus yellas and cod

  21. I caught my first rat of the season last Tuesday at Moes rock. Probably had close to a thousand casts off the rocks over the last 3 weeks for 2 salmon and a 55cm King so not exactly going off but it could always happen tomorrow that they come on strong.
  22. Heaps of options in the Maroochy. If you can use a cast net or bait jigs to get live herring and a nipper pump to get nippers you will catch fish. Get out as early as you can or fish late afternoon. Near the mouth are extensive sand flats to drift with the nippers or head further upstream around the bridges with live herring. Let us know how you go.
  23. Consider taking some celta type lures and a bucket to keep the redfin alive. Children want to see a fish in the first 5 to 10 mins and keeping it alive in a bucket will buy you time while u wait for carp.
  24. I've recently converted from cutting the throat to iki. You can definitely tell when you do it right as the fish expires immediately without thrashing. I dont like hearing live fish dying in the esky anymore must be getting old and soft.
