    Optimax 115

Hi Tony, thanks for your post, very good informative info you gave everyone. Cheers, Huey.
  2. Hi Jeff, thanks for the update-that now makes more sense. Those RPM are ideal and the only foil I would use would be a Permatrim one. Much better than any plastic foils even though they cost more, they work the best. PM me if you would like the Raider price on a Permtrim to suit your 70HP Yamaha. Cheers, Huey.

    Estimate Price

Hi Steve, I would be saying if he is a mate, than $300-$400 for the outboard and $800-$900 for the boat. Cheers, Huey.
  4. Hi Mate, yes I have seen many boats of all brands with damaged transoms due to overpowering. As usual some good advise from Raiders and I think the boat will break with anything more than a 25HP. Cheers, Huey.
  5. Hi Lukas, if the boat is insured than by putting a 50HP you will not be covered in an accident and I think the transom would not be strong enough to cope with the extra performance, the weight will not be a factor if the Tohatsu weighs what you say, but the thrust will damage a transom only designed for 25HP. I would not do it myself, but your call. Cheers, Huey.
  6. Hi Jimmy, I think mate you are going to be very close to the leagl rating on that trailer if it is only rated to 1000KG. When the boat is ready for the water with battery / fuel and normal gear I think you could possibly be over. The only way to know for sure is do what wishin has done and take it over the weighbridge with your normal gear. I see it all the time where dealers put a boat on a too small trailer to save about $300 over the correct trailer and if you have an accident your insurance could be a problem unless you have some proof like a weighbride ticket. Adding you boat/trailer and outboard B4 any gear you are looking at about 850KG so not much in it. One thing to do if you wiegh it is to keep it hooked upto the car and have it carry about 70-80KG on the towbar. Cheers, Huey.
  7. Hi Jimmy, make sure you do not load the boat up with too much gear to go over your trailer weight rating. Check on the VIN plate and hopefully with your rig the trailer is rated to 1200KG minimium. As for damaging the boat, if the trailer is adjusted correctly and the keel of your Alloy boat is being supported by the keel rollers than you will be fine. Just make sure the boat is secured properly to the trailer and does not bounce on the trailer-that will not be good for the boat. Check your trailer and see what the weight rating is and let us know. Cheers, Huey.
  8. Hi Jeff, as I mentioned before I think the OMC/BRP engines run 6P, so I imagine the Yamaha will be the same so try it. As Chris mentioned it will not hurt it. Cheers, huey.

    Trailer Brakes

Hi, the control unit should not get wet, but calipers, rotors and disc pads if you dunk your trailer get all wet and every year we find that come inspection time it can be a great expense to get electric brake away brakes working so that it will pass inspection. What we tell our customers is to keep the running gear dry and you should not have a problem and there really is not too many boats that this is not possible to do, with maybe the exception being boats on bunk trailers and or cats. Cheers, Huey.

    Trailer Brakes

Hi Guys, good advise by everyone and to convert your trailer to electric brakes will be too expensive. You would have to swap over to a hydraulic system and then fit the electric breakaway brakes system to the trailer. It would be cheaper for you to trade-in your existing trailer and buy an electric braked trailer. No need to do this though because your rig is under 2 tonnes and that is fine with mechanical brakes. Any rig over 2 tonnes by law requires brake away electric brakes to be fitted and working(inspected every year for rego)and as mentioned that is hard to do with salt water and the fact that most people dunk their trailers. Cheers, Huey.
  11. Hi Tom, the wires coming from under the flywheel will be your stator or trigger wires and without these the engine will not have spark and that is why your plugs will be wet fouled. Remove the plugs and crank the engine over and check for sprak and I think you will find you do not have any. Not a big job to repair and the easiest way is to rejoin the wires if you do not want to replace the faulty part and see how that goes. If you troll alot with your old Tech engine make sure you are reaching operating temp at ilde and run a good quality oil with the best being XD-100 and with this you will not see any smoke. Let us know the outcome and if you have any questions just ask, Cheers, Huey.
  12. Hi, if it goes acording to plan and no surprises pop up a yearly service on your engine should only run into about $500 with the "Raider" discount. His quote seems a bit high to me and if your engine does not have a problem just the scheduled service than I would ask why so much. Cheers, Huey.
  13. Hi Rod, I am 99% sure that they will not be compatible. The new unit should come with a new transducer and all you have to do is remove the old one and route the new one-not that big a job. Cheers, Huey.
  14. Hi Guys, all Tachos have a pulse setting. I am honestly not sure what the settings needs to be on a Yamaha, Spongy have a look behind the tacho and try the different settings in the water. Good pick-up wishin Huey.
  15. Oz, what is your WOT RPM then, You might be able to go down in pitch size and still stay under about 5500RPm at WOT. Cheers, Huey.
  16. Hi Oz, what Pelican said. Going down in pitch will slow you down slightly at idle, I doubt you would notice it though and you run the risk of over revving. Best to run a sea anchor or the like, or better yet just try what Pel said. Cheers, Huey.
  17. Hi Spongy, now we just have to confirm that the tacho is working correctly. If it is and you are only seeing the RPM you are talking about we need to make sure the engine is running on 3 cylinders and if it is than you are needing to go down to about a 13 inch. As mentioned check and make sure there is nothing wrong with the outboard like no spark etc on one cylinder and then we can sort out the correct prop. Cheers, Huey.
  18. Hi Canoe, yes I like the Piranha range of sounders-they are good value and a good unit and are portable which is why I guess you really like it for your canoe. The transducer comes with a suction cap that works well at the speeds you will be travelling. PM me for the "Raider" price if you like. Cheers, Huey.

    Engine Rpm

Hi Glenn, your max RPM is fine at 6000. The recommended range for your outboard is 5500-6000 and as with any outboard 4-Stroke or 2-Stroke it is better to be propped towards the upper end of the range. Your boat has the correct prop on it. Cheers, Huey.
  20. Hi Spongy, I agree with Red, there is something strange going on because I doubt a boat with only 70HP will be able to do 33 knots at 3200RPM. Your Tacho could be faulty and as Ross has mentioned you have given us the diameter, while Pitch is the important thing we need to know in relation to WOT RPM. With that diameter I would be thinking you might have a 19 or 21 inch when if everything is working as it should on your outboard you would need a 15 or 17 inch. Let us know what you find, Cheers, Huey.
  21. Hi Netic, I do not know why you are still carrying on about this. We all know you prefer another brand of outboard and that is your right and opinion, but as I have said any brand of outboard with the wrong prop on it or pushing a big boat will drink fuel. I still have not heard from John on my offer to help him and I wonder if he has taken up the other offer from a person to take it to BRP to look at. It is going around in cirles, but as I mentioned before testing done in house by each manufacturer on their own product on the same boat shows the E-TEC DOES NOT use any more fuel than a same HP 4-Stroke and in fact at idle with the stratified fuel burn they are cleaner and use less fuel. I have copies of these tests if any one would like a copy send me a PM with a fax number on it and the HP you are interested in and I will be able to send them to you. Or do what I just did and goto the Evinrude and Yamaha websites and print them off yourself. Do not forget to add the service costs of a carby 2-Stroke or 4-Stroke to any discussion on cost of ownership of an outboard. Just my thoughts and I wish John all the best and as I have said B4 if he is not happy he should just swap the engine out to a 4-Stroke and be done with it and then find something else to worry about. Huey.

    New Trailer

Hi Jewgaffer, how to have the trailer adjusted correctly can be a lengthy discussion. Basically you want the boat transom to be carried by the last roller and each roller to be carry weight. I see it all the time where a boat has too much overhang over the back of the trailer, the winch post is in the wrong position, the rollers are not adjusted and carring weight, the axle in the wrong position and much more. The best thing would be either to PM me a picture of your boat on the trailer or call by next time you are up at the Hawkesbury and I can give you my opinion if the trailer is set-up well. This applies to any Raider and a glass boat will be differnent to a alloy boat in terms of the type of trailer and how they are set-up. Cheers, Huey.

    New Trailer

Hi Craig, keeping the trailer dry when launching and retrieving is the best bit of advise I can give you. With your supa-rollamtaic that will be easy and a retriever mate will not suit that trailer and you do not need one with the roller set-up at the back of your trailer. I wish you many happy Kms with your new trailer. Cheers, Huey.
  24. Hi Dunc, good to hear you are making progress. Not sure why this was not spotted earlier, would of saved your mate some dollars and time. The corrosion is down to salt and unfortunately Tohatsu do not have the best reputation for corrosion resistance-they have a high copper content in their alloy, which make it easier to cast but not as good in salt water. You will have to just inspect that area every couple of years and not let it build up as much. Cheers, Huey.
  25. Hi Gonewishin, I understand your point of view and yes I know you were probably not referring to my statement about BRP doubling market share, but let me put it another way. BRP went from being 4th in "clean" engine sales last year to second this year, only 2% behind the market leader and BRP do not even have small E-TEC yet, while the other guys have clean engines below 40HP. When BRP get small E-TEC by about this time next year I think they are easily going to be number 1 in any way you look at it. Not having a go at you and you are right about marketting, I take every thing I read with a grain of salt and I beleive I have been around long enough to make a decision on what I believe. I will bow out of this now, because everyone know which I prefer and I wish every one good luck in what ever outbard engine they buy because at the end of the day all this competetion is only go for one person and that is us the "boaters" Cheers, Huey. Hi Netic, I do not know this, but if it is like in the States, the magazine will approach a boat guy for a boat and then the outboard guys for outboards. Then each outboard guy is allowed to set-up the boat to its best potential and then they test. Cheers and all the best with this topic, Huey.
