  1. I simply use a heavy duty long shank hook with squid on bream gear. (a 4' rod with no sinker) and usually no bite offs. Just let it sink and you'll hit all depths as leather jackets are everywhere. however i saw a dude using a 5 metre pole with 6 meters of line and he got about 20 leather jackets plus just as many butter bream/diamond fish so that was pretty cool.
  2. Hey mates I was flicking through fishraider earlier and loads of people were asking for bait recommendations for various species of fish. Just thought I might share this website I found for those people who don't use it already. http://tweedbait.com.au/what-bait-what-species/. Keep in mind that it doesn't include all species such as gummies and flounder and also doesn't include species of fish such as specific species of snapper.
  3. Hi guys/fishraiders I was wondering whether or not anyone had any tips about fishing Illawong point/bay. I have been there plenty of times however I have not had any luck with any flathead, bonito or flounder that are meant to be there. I have seen one single legal whiting caught there but never caught one myself. I normally use a paternoster rig for bottom fishing and a float+ganged pillies at night and usually catch tailor, bream, big eels and small snapper. Anything I'm doing wrong or maybe the place has been overfished. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Arthur
  4. great for bait but if you bleed them quick then flour them up then its awesome on deep fry. kinda chewy but i think i overcooked it. NO MATTER decent sashimi
  5. awesome! i just managed to tie a proper loop knot then caught a 2.5 kilo tailor! i had no idea they got that big...
  6. i just use a larger hook to open it up then slide it in, take the hook out to snap it in place(then usually slide it the wrong way and end up hooking myself the second time)
  7. try using twin circle hooks (7/0) gamakatsu hooks with mackerel fillets using frames for burley
  8. Thanks, and sorry to be a pain but would a paternoster rig work or should i use something else? Maybe i should use a lure? I have a chrome
  9. and also which side should i fish on?
  10. Hi fishraiders , never been to avoca before but heading there soon. I don't have cleats and i don't wanna get washed in so could i fish from the beach or do i have to be on the rocks? Going after jewies, salmon, tailor and flathead and i have a nice 12' surf rod o casting is no problem. any help would be appreciated, thanks. Cheers
  11. So youre telling me it was some other crazy, demented long, bright chrome fish with sharp teeth that i caught is that right?
  12. There i one type of eel that looks like a pike, i think its a conger (or it looks like one) and there are loads at illawong point, beautiful eating with butter and lemon but only bad thing is its really boney and mum said couldnt enjoy eating it coz of the bones. but you should probably takes them and eat them to clean up. most snags are actually big eels so try to take it in a little before you snap it.
