  1. I really like size 1/0 octopus circle because they can be fished with bait for snapper, trevally, flathead and lots of the bread and butter species and you can also live bait with them. When you get them try to use ligt gauge or regular gauge for baiting and go with a heavier gauge for live baiting.
  2. My number one goal for this summer is definitely to get my first king on lure and hopefully beat my PBs of 83 kingfish and a petty 32 snapper.
  3. Ive caught 2 octopus on lures, both on SPs. The first one was on a Zman curly tail for flathead and it bit so i struck. It was on for a long time but I though I was on some seaweed but just before i got a look it came off. I cast out again and it strikes again, this time I flip it over and then the hook comes out. This specimen was about 2 kg. The second was also on a Zman lure, however this time I knew it was an octopus so i kept the tension on and smoked it in. I reckon they just hunt it just like any other fish, since their natural prey is small baitfish and crabs, since I've got them on livies and in crab pots.
  4. might want to go a little heavier with landbased livie fishing. You should be ok for now. A 5/0 is pretty big, i landed by biggest king on a 1/0, so I recommend going smaller. Three way swivel rig is pretty good for livie from shore. Its the main line to a 3 way swivel where one end goes to a leader to a hook and the other goes to a sinker. Fish the bait on the bottom and anything big enough should eat it. Expect bycatch of flathead and flounder in the brooklyn area.
  5. There's some really good fish around there. It really fires in the summer. My biggest bream was there, 48, and my biggest flatty was also there, 62. Fish on the flats and deeper holes for flathead and bream, around the bridge for bream, trevs and jews. Some big eel tailed cats there too.
  6. thanks mate, that really good advice mate.
  7. Thx alot mate, ive used lots of similar method. How long do u leave it for
  8. Nice Job mate, great flatty at high 80s. Nice fight? Just a quick question, how do u get your poddies? Thx
  9. Very nice sesh mate, guessing u were using 2 hook paternoster rigs with pillie? Thx
  10. Thanks rick, maybe that's why we only got one, we had pretty nice fresh bait but the crab was still very nice though.
  11. I personally reckon the hook sizes change a little base on where your fishing and the pressure on the fish there. For trevally and most other medium sized fish would use a size 4 to 1/0, just depends on what bait you're using. For live baiting i normally use a 3/0 + octopus circle, usually use owners because they are cheaper and a little stronger than gamagatsus. Baiting the hook also varies in different situations, more pressured areas=cover more hook. I always leave a point out and since i normally fish weightless baits for bream and trevally. I just wind down and lift to hook the fish. Hiding the point will get slightly more bites but much worse hook up.
  12. Went with PATTHERAT to his place in one of the creeks that connect to the hawkesbury over the weekend. Left Sat morning and arrived to have lunch and have a late arvo fish. Got rods setup for carp and had plenty of takes on corn but only managed one, about 1 kilo. Also had a small turtle take some sweetcorn, poor bugger would of had a sore tongue after that. Next morning we got up later and went out for a fish, I focused more on lures for flatties and my mate got some prawns and minnows also for flatties. After many many casts on a 4.5' curly tail with no results i switched to a big squidgy paddler for some more action and be a little more agressive. Very first cast i hooked up, big headshakes and a decent run later, my mate netted a healthy 38 flatty. I grab my mates rod to tie one a bigger lure, he picked up my rod and had a few flicks. Few casts in he rips the rod up, good bend and some very nice runs. Sand kicked up all around our feet and a very nice fish is in the net, went 55 and very thicc. Had them cleaned up and on the bbq for lunch, both fish had thick fillets but had empty stomachs. After lunch we dropped some pots, fingers crossed for some muddies to take home. After dropping the pots we went for a swim and some wakeboarding. Had the pots in for 2 hours or so and pulled them up before we were heading home and I reckon we didn't leave them in long enough, three baits were untouched and one had a nice muddy in it. If you guys have any tips for trapping muddies as I'm definitely an amateur. Headed home after a great weekend with a grin from ear to ear, thanks to PATTHERAT for taking me along for some great fishing.
  13. my mate got a single squid in the harbour, tiny but perfect live bait. Didn't even get touched.
  14. thanks for the replies, I'll have a look on gumtree. I like the idea of a daiwa crossfire, do they have them at fish outta water? The shimano raider is a little expensive for school but I'll be getting one for a new summer outfit soon.
  15. Hey guys, first term next year I have fishing as a sport choice. We are going to be fishing at curl curl beach and I'm just wondering if there are any cheap rods for under 100 bucks. I'm looking for something that can handle some decent fish, handle some abuse and not need too much care. I'll probably use this rod for casting lures on spinning reels but I also wanna do some bait fishing too. It cannot be too big because I have to to take it to school so a 2 or 3 piece around 10 foot should do. I'm currently looking at a shimano eclipse rod if that's any good, i have however seen a lot of posts container a "Mojiko surf cannon" that sound like a decent rod for it's price from what I've heard. Also what kind of fish should I be expecting at curl curl and what techniques should I use? Thank you.
  16. where is the "wall" at long reef? Coordinates would be awesome, thx.
  17. right, what kind of fg do u usually use. I normally just use a locked fg r double uni
  18. If the sinker is not running on the braid what would you run the sinker on. Thx
  19. I prefer to use owner hooks as they are often a little cheaper than gammies and they dont open up. Ive had gammies open up on smaller kings just because i went a little hard, owners are a little bit harder and the point stays a litter longer than gammies.
  20. if its tangling while casting then the weight might be too heavy or just that the leader is too long.
  21. if u dont mind me asking, where is this wharf and whats the weight of the metal
  22. probably, i have no clue. i have no clue how to catch either luderick or drummer. Whats the difference between drummer and luderick? Thx
  23. were the luderick on the crabs too? How did u use the crabs, were they cut or whole? thx
