  1. I fish St Georges Basin in water 5-9m deep. What puzzles me about my sounder picture is this. If my boat is moving forwards and my sounder is showing the bottom, how do you relate the boat speed to trace speed?Surely the boat is nowhere anything showing on the screen because the trace speed is not matching the boat speed. thought. What speed do sounders run at. Mine is a Lowrance elite4 chirp. JIM
  2. I have just completed an advanced resuscitation course with Marine Rescue and they teach 2 breaths to 20 compressions. They did say that if facial injury prevents breathing then compressions only as some air does exchange due to chest being compresses
  3. Do you have a 12v test lamp or meter? If so put plug in and turn lights on and work towards the lights . Jim

    Boat ramp

My boat is a 4.3m Quintrex aluminium. Too much marine growth to leave in water. I will probably try hardwood runners, maybe a small dolly under boat. I have the wheels so a bit of construction required.

    Boat ramp

I was thinking along the lines of some sort of composite plastic stuff that will not rot, but not sure of supplier. Jim

    Boat ramp

I have a concrete ramp on which I use my trailer to get boat out of water. Because of medical problem winching onto a tilting trailer, then winching the trailer up the ramp is difficult as trailer tips high when boat coming on. I want to construct a low level retrieval system such as wooden slides and rollers mounted onto the concrete. What suitable product could I use for the slides. The concrete goes half under water at high tide. Suggestions please. Jim
  9. I have been coming here for over 50 years and now live here. We went through a period where the Basin was netted commercially, and catching a good sized fish was difficult. Since netting stopped the fish stock have been building up and now good fish are around. My old style fishing was to drift, using nippers. But as nippers are in short supply, I have had to change fishing style, using other baits. I have tries soft plastics with little success whilst others get good results. I cannot remember the last time I came in with a good mixed bag. OH WELL! Maybe I should fish more
  10. Hi Colin. Weather a bit ordinary this weekend. The Basin can become treacherous in a strong n.e. blow. This is bad on the south end but calmer in the top end. Around 90% of Marine Rescue work is in St Georges Basin due to wind and other factors. We have had n.e. for most days for the last few weeks. Occasional southerly, but makes fishing challenging. Jim
  11. I am sure that I read a number of years back that long handled prawn nets were no longer legal. I thought at the time that I couldn't use mine as they were all long handled. BUT. It appears that once again I am wrong Sorry.
  12. I believe that long handled prawn nets are illegal

    Mud crab sizes

NSW regs says 8.5cm for mud crabs. Ridiculous! Way too small! How on earth would you remove the crab meat? I have just caught a 17.5 cm crab and that was ok, but 8.5 cm? Sad. Jim
  15. Just looking an NSW fisheries crab sizes. 8.5cm for a mud crab? How much meat would you get from a crab that size? Surely way too small for any use. I caught one yesterday that was 17cm. I thought that was barely big enough .
  16. On Sunday afternoon I took my daughter and s.i.l. fishing on St Georges Basin. We soon found ourselves in a school of small red bream (actually juvenile snapper). The rig they were using was 2 hooks on droppers about 30cm apart with a sinker on the end of the line. Fish after fish came on board and was released, until this happened. We could hardly believe this.hmm Cant up load photos. However this bream had taken one hook and once on it took the second hook. So it had a hook on each side of its mouth. Must have been hungry
  17. Thanks. It is only used in a 4m tinny so I will think about it. Jim
  18. One of my fuel tanks has a pin hole in it. Is it possible to seal this leak?

    Luderick

Living at Sussex Inlet I am an avid luderick fisherman. At the moment there are schools of these fish everywhere, but they are not biting because they are spawning. Amazing sight to see these fish schooling over the sand areas away from any weed beds. I know that when they come on the bite they will have lost a bit of condition. Good to see so many. Jim

    Jokes

The old local fisho was out in his boat all day and had never got a bite. Up comes this 40ft cruiser and 8 people drop their lines in. Suddenly there were 8 fish hooked. This went on over and over again with fish coming in everywhere. The old fisho up anchored and headed back to the ramp, followed by the big boat. One of the guys asked the old fisho if he had caught anything to which he sadly shook his head. He then asked what they were using for bait. Licorice was the reply. He looked puzzled and asked what they catch on licorice. Allsorts was the reply
  23. That's what I like about luderick. The iodine weedy taste, especially the skin. Leave it in and enjoy the unusual flavour. YUM.
