  1. Adding to Hueys post if it has been running cold, too much oil, , crap oil these can lead to stuck rings and other issues. If these aren't recognised and fixed ie correct fuel mix and tune with a quality oil and some remedial action like running engine tuner long term damage can happen to the motor. Carbon deposits can build up on plugs, in exhaust ports and in the exhaust which will all hurt performance and possibly damage the motor. 2 strokes are tough and simple and will run forever with a little bit of care. They will always have some smoke especially cold , at start up on choke and after having been left standing for a while Look the 2 stroke is a simple basic thing so if it is running and has good compression you are in with a chance. The other main issue on outboards is corrosion or scale in the water galleries and that is hard to tell from a quick inspection. Corrosion or scale build up affects the cooling and leads to overheats and the only real thing you can do is flushing and preventative maintainance of checking thermostat and replacing the water pump impeller regularly. The exhaust and hence smoke has 2 places it can come out. The hub through the prop ( when over 1000rpm) and a smaller hole which is the idle or exhaust bypass hole which is above the water line 1/3 way down the leg. At idle the motor doesn't produce enough exhaust gas to push it out the prop hub ( prop is 1 foot under water) so the smaller port allows some to escape so you get a nice smooth quiet idle without bubbling water. Motor gets correct backpressure to run. Smoke from teh idle prt often looks like it is wafting from around the cowl. There is a gasket between the motor and the leg and that can ( not often) degrade or have bolts loose and exhaust gas can escape via that. With the cowl off and motor running you should be able to see if that is the issue. If the bloke has shown it to 5 or 6 people and done 5 or 6 cold starts and choked them each time and it hasn't had a decent run it will more than likely be just flooded and a small oil build up. Cheap oils left standing in tote tanks or old fuel can be a factor as well. He may have accidentily double dosed fuel with oil. If it was still doing it after a 20 minute full throttle run on the water with fresh fuel and good oil I would have my thinking cap on that it has a mixture problem and possibly larger issues. Take someone who knows, compression test it,check plugs, take a tote tank with fresh fuel and mix quality oil in the right amount in front of the bloke and run the motor.
  2. Get someone to do a boat and motor inspection who know what to look for and what to test. Too many lemons out there that cost too much to fix when for a small extra cost you could know you have a good one or avoid the traumas. Never buy without compression test on the motor and check for rot in the hull. Prefer to have a on water test with someone on board who knows the expected performance before handing over the final payment as well. Gives you a chance to check out the whole package and the trailer. Bit hard from your description to work out what was going on. What mechanic has the owner used to service the motor and how regularly has it been done. Does the owner have records of service. If not you'll be up for waterpump impeller and a tune so you know you have a relaible motor. Take that into account as well. Make it worth the sellers while offer to pay to have the motor looked at and tuned and if good you are a buyer you know it is good and if not you have saved yourself a lot of grief.
  3. I am sick of the media and police commenting on alcohol when they don't know jack crap. They should say nothing if they do not know. People don't read follow up reports or the coroners reports. For all anyone knows they are tea toddlers ( no I don't either) Everytime anything hapens on a boat the public read that dross and assume people were intoxicated at some level and should have been wearing jackets. That makes the publics view of boaties very poor and then even it is a most minor contributing factor in the survival or passing away it gets onto the statistics. We are all going to be pissed off when we have to wear life jackets day and night and a lot has to do with media reporting as general public doesn't understand that you are not required to by law. The quote from the police should have been. Alcohol - we have no idea but it will be checked like in any invesigation. Life Jackets - well they were probably there as we have recovered several off the beach but we are yet to confirm they were off this boat. There was no requirement to be wearing them. Bodies recovered were or were not wearing jackets. There is no requirement for them to have been wearing them. If in fact they know facts. Very sad situation this for all the families involved and I wish the media and police wouldn't beat the story up. These official comments and reporting do nothing for all boaties out there. Sorry for the rant
  4. They suffer a bit with weight up high , need serious support and also you get a huge amount of windage with clears and it makes a big difference out wide when wind blows up. Try and find a owner or boat for sale with a hardtop and see what experiences they have had. Bimini have a fair few advantages and aren't that expensive.
  5. Haven't read Clubs stuff for several years. 1 question. If it is a agreed value for 30k and it is written off. What is the net the client gets? Recovery costs? Does that also include all the cash , personal stuff lost etc? We went away from agreed value several years ago as after many questions showed it to be a bit flakey. They commented that dealers offering valuatins were talking up valuations ( client got a warm fuzzy feeling) as they were getting kickbacks on value insured and no win that the insurers were still paying on market value not the agreed valuation. Things like epirbs, safety gear fixed or portable equipment? It is so often teh little bits that add up to make a reasonable payment seem well underdone when you add it all up. It is all very complicated and a good insurance broker can keep up to date but for teh normal human it is hard work and time consuming.. Thanks
  6. Garry do you have to get a valuation every year? When I last looked into different insurers I found that agreed value wasn't really agreed value. Worth reading the fine print and doing the phone call with an example. If it was a write off I have seen even the recovery charges get taken off the agreed value and yet they won't allow you to overinsure to take account of these. For no reason my insurance is up over 15% this year and unusually they are not prepared to discount or negotiate. Might have to go elsewhere and get the introductory new customer rate from another company and see what they charge for . The boat show stand for one insurer often has a voucher or a quote number discounted for those that attend and do a quote there. I really think insurers should have worked examples in their paperwork as it is all very misleading. I could have a rant here but it is really worth reading teh fine print as most policies aren't what they appear to be in boat insurance. Watch out espcially for what is secured equipment and wording like due care thet boat was secure. Couple of companies are offering a discount for a winter lay period where insurance is lower for a few months of non use if it is stored securely. Several friends have boat in parents name as the insurance is 1/2 price. Sounds silly as if the olds are retired they spend all day on the water etc etc but insurance is all about what the punter will pay and risk is asecondary idea. Offer to pay a higher exess is a way to reduce costs . Little calims are a shitfight anyway and affect your rating Paying online some are also offering a discount.
  7. tom uglys closed I think and he does some stuff on E bay
  8. pelican

    Berly Trails

Radio?? If they are out there without it on they need their head red
  9. It's Ok to use at the minute as they are doing rigging area and carpark stuff.
  10. Make sure you allow extra $ for the correct wiring. Most failures I have seen are due to poor electrical set up offering poor performance. Strong mountings are required so check that as it may add considerable cost strengthening anchor well and the bowsprit. For the $ and convenience what about the simplicity of a anchor ball retriever or is it for inshore as some can be very slow on deep retrieve ? Get quotes on real speeds under loads not their free speeds if you know what I mean. They can be very frustrating holding position on the drop if they don't free spool and you can't stop them mid spool. Just supply the deck wench with some extra coffee on each outing. I love em when they work right and have got better over the years but geeze they can be a pain.
  11. Is it a floating pontoon or fixed wharf? Tidal ? Check you are insured if left unattended- some policies suck. Especially ask by email or phone and determin what they mean by secure and in your control Obviously you can never have enough buffers between wharf and boat. Can still use muffs underwater while in the water to flush if you wish. Leave motor up after flushing. Do you ave a photo of wharf? Check out there is not a "locals or private" ramp close by as launching becomes very quick when it is only 2 minutes up the road Copy from elsewhere Making Fast Alongside Although with a lightweight yacht you can temporarily make fast with just bow and stern lines, the following method provides security for all sizes of craft. Normally four ropes or mooring lines are used to secure a boat alongside. The head rope is led from the bow well forward along the jetty. Similarly the stern rope is led aft from the stern. These are normally the first two ropes taken ashore, since they will locate the boat in her berth. Better security is provided by springs, which hold bow and stern in to the jetty and prevents the boat from surging alongside. One spring is taken from the bow to a point aft. This is known as the forward spring because it stops the boat moving forward. The back spring or aft spring is taken from the boats stern to a point well forward on the pontoon -------------------------------------------------------- The alternative is to anchor for and aft 5m away from the wharf and just use a lead rope over to wharf. Anchor , pull lead rope towards wharf , hop off and boat will return back to 5m from wharf and safe from being scratched etc. Experience helps as it is a bit of trial and error. Weighting the anchor rope helps this action if there is a strong tidal flow. You can leave teh anchors in place for the few days and just attach a buoy to them and to make it quicker each time. We use the same system with boat attached to shore and a single anchor. Often there is a mooring buoy that you an tie up to and just use a dinghy to get out to the boat. After a few days you start getting slime and after 4 you will start to get the coral worms ( little hard shell like sandpaper) if it is in salt water. They resist falling off when under way and even pressure washers. Really depends on how quick growth is happening in teh spot. Consider boat bagging it by slipping a cheap tarp under it each night and just tying off to your gunnels as it limits waterflow and hence growth. If a FG boat a couple of tablespoons of pool chlorine will keep water clear of slime but wouldn't suggest it with a ally
  12. Since it is used by people that get shot at you would reckon a cabin would be a positive and at 75mph in winter it it going to be mighy cold in winter
  13. They have funding for the pontoon and if ike most it is on a use it or lose it. Perhaps they are accumulating to enable themselves to do a decent job as there is new grants now open or application.
  14. So how did they miss him. He was only 200m from where he started??? Where was the safety gear including whistles and a torch to attract attention even in the fog. Personally I would have pulled the motor on board or dumped it and rowed to shore somewhere- anywhere as it was pretty cold.. Put the anchor out so he didn't drift ?????? Bugger not to have a rod on board to keep occupied??? 16yo old without a phone??? Thats odd Glad he is OK but a lot of people were looking to no avail. News said it was fishing line not a net?
  15. Better to ask for one in Braile How the hell else is your guide dog going to safely know how many people to have on board. Better check your dog isn't colour blind as well. We are all members of the Fishraiders Disabled Fishing Association aren't we. The way I fish I must qualify. Ps Jewgaffer - shame they only sent you a photo - would have been nice if they sent you a sticker. PSS is it only for boats under 6.5m???? If so what is the new colour for those fancy boys with big toys over 6.5m?? Hope they are going to take a lot to the boatshow in a few weeks Spoke to a second hand boat dealer today and he had never heard of it - they are so good at this stuff.
  16. Some administration jockety read a requirement that the Maritime had to get it's "green" credentials and use his stimulus package. Don't think he quite get the right idea so now we have green stickers. This formum content is officially carbon neutral and involved only the slight mollesting of a few electrons No logs were burnt , trees cut down in the production of this comment Conspiracy theory.................................................. All lables have chip in tham that will call home should you enter one of the new marine parks or sanctuary PS Keep it quiet don't tell anyone.
  17. Found out the full story Apparently the green stickers have been sent via the ministers email system that the government uses. It was then also sent by fax to a house via a telstra telephone line Apparently no record of it can be found and I believe them as I have a telstra line that has the same ability to not work- surprise surprise That explains everything. Ok I was only joking. The truth is the bloke who was employed to lick the back of the new stamps complained the glue didn't taste right and meet the Australian standard for glue taste and tactile tounge feel. He is out on compo at the minute but there is a recruitment drive to find someone else with large wet tounge and little taste. Unfortunately the RSPCA is no longer allowing the labradoor to to it as something about demarkation dispute and hygine after he was spotted licking his butt in a meal break. This is a major crisis so if you know a solotion ring the crisis line 1800 28557448 ( bullshit) Ring crime stoppers if you can identify Swordfisherman or his boat as we must eliminate these non sticker carrying illegals off our waterways. I think my boat just became a 1997 model?? PS wife says green doesn't match the curtains and will never do - now I'm getting really angry!!!! Did the waterways not consult an interior designer. Surely they have one on staff.
  18. Welll you'd be a law breaker and the full force of the law should be used to incarcerate you. Don't you understand the importance of a little green sticker??? Maybe the guys were suffering repeatatve strain injury of the mouth on safety checks and needed to be able to ask a new question. Just tell me that they are no pre printed with what MSB thinks your capacity should be as with different model boats especially cats and trihulls or wide beam boats there formula is very very conservative and doesn't take into accound ex survey boats etc. Ahhhhh what the hell we can all use green plastic in a laser printer!!!!!!!! Better check the boat who is inspecting you to see if he has his / hers!!!
  19. Oh christ when will changes like this stop. What is the point????? Did they say you could be fined? Just looked on website and couldn't see any news on this new colour sticker Give em tasers next!!!! We can call this the Tripodi green period ?? Edit PS forgot to say thanks If anyone actually knows about this it would be good to hear what the story is??? I'd hate to be colourblind.
  20. Should add that they are great and make any outboard sound as low noise as a idling car. We gave one to a neighbour a couple of years ago as he had no idea they existed. As a midweek boat user he used to piss us off so bad with a early morning start to check motor was OK before off to the ramp. The fact he could go fishing and we were off to work never helped I reckon they should be mandatory for anyone flushing just to be fair to neighbours, residents near ramps, people having a picnic and other boat users as the noise really does travel. The new ally ones sure are better than the old bit of oily hessian we used to use stuffed up the prop.
  21. Sounding a lot better now with the extra details. Cautious - mate if you asked on here who screwed up with their first boat purchase or has had a lemon motor in the last 50 years you would be bowled over in the rush as lot of us have made serious mistakes that have huge dents in the wallet - might not even admit to a few in case the wife sees it. Boats like cars are so easy to screw up on and spend all your time being worried about them, patching them up and then losing interest as you have spent the time fixing not using and enjoying. If there was an award for poor purchases my mates would take it out from dud motors, hull with a million pin holes, to a trailer that had been fibreglassed up before painting and let go on the main road 5 minutes from the sellers house. Stolen boat reposessed after first day fishing when old owner recognised it as a stolen boat at the ramp. Mate the stories , and there are some classics are all a good laugh now as we lived through em both physically and financially but at the time it could have gone terribly wrong.
  22. Most will come out between the prop and the gearbox or a little higher up near the cav plate. If the motor will still run it means the exhaust gas is getting out so the water must be as well. Some have a few smaller hole to let water out of the hub as well but haven't seen em for a few years. Just want to check you are talking about a silencer ( ie you fit a plug into exhaust) not just muffs that put water into teh water pump. It is sometimes hard to get the muffs lined up and for the water pump to start pumping.
  23. Good on ya. I know it is all exciting and everything but I am going to play devils advocate here Why has it got a hole? Have you done a water test? Can you do that on Wednesday and he can show you how deep he plunges the trailer and any launching quirks? What fuel mix has he been using , get his left over oil. Safety gear, oars etc? Have you had someone do a compression test on the motor or is it written on the service records? Spare tyres for trailer , spare rollers , any other boat parts he has lying around, spare plugs for the motor? Spare or damaged props? Motor manuals or receipts? Get all the safety gear and anhors etc the bloke has lying around. Make sure you sort insurance and Revs check before paying and taking away and make sure you get a suitable receipt so rego transfer goes smooth. I always like to see drivers lic and to copy details and make sure the collection address is his and teh boat rego papers line up. If not boatcoded be careful. Best hints I can give it to put some sikaflex in the hole and plug it up. Use it and check it all out before you pend any money or change anything. We have all bought boats and had grand ideas and even done afew but often it is better to wait a while and see how you use it and what you really need. Ask here before you start painting prep or such as that boat is of the age where they used chromate paints and if you want kids later you need to take care as it is poisonous. Check your towball and lights etc and buy adaptor if flat to round is required or just buy a lightbar. Hope it is all ok and the bloke is honest. If none of eth above makes sense ask a few more questions. Regardless of last services it is worthwhile for peice of mind to get it checked properly so you know if any stuff hasn't been done properly and that allows you to go into the future and keep on top of issues so you don't get stranded.
  24. Using food seafood ( possibly imported) as bait risks introducing bugs and disease into our waterways. I know many frozen supermarket packs of fish have a note on it as a condition "not to be used for bait must be cooked" " I think it is a condition of quaranteen and import. A lot od coles woolies prawns are aussie and even the ones that are are often packed in indonesia etc. I think this has been discussed on other threads
  25. Depends on where the leakis and how it was caused. Some alloy boats get pin holes from corrosion and depending on how widespread it is it is vry hard to fix. If it is impact damage that is easy enough to get welded up. A bucket is more than a pin hole but could be a bung Get the serial and model numbers of the motor and it will tell you the year. A 10 yo motor would generally be a lot better that the older stuff you were looking at. Still need to get it checked out properly. see what it looks like and how the trailer is and how honest the whole thing is.
