20240208_174626.thumb.jpg.93f1a0cdfb6cce1cf36585366b635043.jpgFollow up from my previous report Skinny water bass session.

The following day I returned to my local creek as I couldn't resist those topwater eats any longer 🤤

I made it to the creek safely and began contemplating weather the old faithful baitjunkie frogs where getting tied on or maybe a cicada. I decided on the frogs.

As i began tying the uni knot to the weedless hook, the deafening sounds of cicadas flapping their wings  filled my eardrums. This reassured my decision. Off went the frog and on went the cicada. This was no ordinary cicada. I believe it to be a fairly decent design. Someone might be able to help my identify the name and brand of the lure after looking at the photo. Anyway the back story was that I had found it a few years back and it had just sat in the tackle box. The reason I wasn't able to identify this lure was its branding is in Japanese.

Anyway let's get back to the report. First cast I plucked out a solid 30cm bass and immediately the confidence was boosted.

By the time the session was out I had 6  low thirties bass on top. I pretty good result.

    Day 3

I returned for the 3rd day straight (totally hooked on the topwater boofs).

This session was very slow, probably due to the heat. After multiple cast, I contemplated calling it a day. A small willow tree cast a small shadow over the still water. I landed the lure 30cm from the bank. Booooofff, the instant the cicada lure hit the water a bass has smashed it.

After almost getting bricked, a 42cm fish was laying on my mat. A super solid fish for the water I was fishing and a dounut saver 🥳20240209_182324.jpg.3b18076aa596cd093fbcddd22d19575f.jpg20240209_182545.thumb.jpg.cd7083b04bc9b8b4f1ed6e30d5b54a2a.jpg

The jackall micro pompador would be a good alternative if you can't find it

    Yeah k 👍, u ever had luck there ?

Ever caught redfin in there either?

I would recommend launching at penrith boating ramp if your taking your yak and trolling close to the bank and throwing topwater in the sticks, this can be quite hit and miss tho, yarramundi and penrith weir are other starting points, other then that google earth is your friend when it comes to finding creeks and potential spots 👍

Cheers mate, I've caught my first redfin and bass in manly. Last sunday we caught around 6 tiny bass on topwater. Livewell was broken so could not take them back for the aquarium

You might want to watch some of Aaron’s videos  before going for a paddle there especially  if you’re thinking of down near Windsor ( Windsor bait and tackle YouTube channel ) - you are pretty much paddling in raw sewage down there every time it rains  . I think upstream is a bit better but it definitely has me thinking twice about getting any of that water on me !

Yep, his last few uploads have just been about Sydney's sewage problem

Yeah mate nepean is a great system but can be challenging if your going on a kayak and don't know the area well.

Where u located? I could recommend a few spots for bass

Around chatswood mate, manly dam is the only place I've gone for bass

You're certainly getting around Albert. Offshore, Cod and Yellas, harbour sessions. You are keen, that's for sure.   bn

I'm just grateful for all the great people I've met fishing @big Neil (that includes you haha). I don't reckon I can name another hobby/passion where it can land you in a strangers boat at 4 o'clock in the morning even though it's the first time you've met them.

Hi Albert , other way round, the dominant (ie largest) brown groper will become the local male when the previous male (blue) groper dies or leaves the area. Either way well done , great eating fish. For seasickness the best cure is more time at sea-also DONT look down , find which medication works best for you .

Thanks for correcting me Paddy, I've got no knowledge about reef fish as this is the first time I've even seen a groper in real life.

If your mates using bait were pulling in Wrasse and Sweep, I think I would have stayed with lures……

edit…..that “Blue” Groper looks pretty red/Brown?

Hey @noelm I think male blue gropers stay blue but the female ones start to turn reddish brown

I tried this rig out and lost 2 of my good jigs hahahaha, I definitely wasn't using the rig right. I was retrieving it too often and got a heavy snag, didn't use thin line for the sinker part so it snapped at the swivel 🥲 Is the rig just meant to be cast out then left alone whilst jigs look like they are moving due to currents?

How did you attach the sinker to the main line? I usually do a singular wrap uni knot or use a friction lock by running my bottom line through the sinker eyelet multiple times. There are multiple ways you can work it, I mainly use a smaller sinker, around the size of my pink maybe a bit bigger depending on the depth. This allows you to find the bottom, work the squid jig normally and allow you to deadstick it. Hope this helps!

  9. Hey all,

Went out the weekend before school started again and managed to snag a ride in my mates boat. We had a later start, launching at around 7 am after the usual boat ramp had been closed due to an accident so we launched off Roseville. Headed out towards the heads and started with at a reef nearby. My mates and their dad mostly fish bait off the reefs but after being cold turkey with bait for about a year I decided to only switch over when I couldn’t catch anything. I had brought along my shimano jewel snapper rod paired with a 5k and a 2.5 foot American 100% fibreglass ice fishing rod paired with a 3k. I started off with the ice rod just for fun but didn’t except to hook up first cast after dropping down a 3inch slim swimz in space guppy. Felt very solid and peeled drag for a bit but spat or pulled the hook. I kept on lifting the minnow off the bottom and letting it sink back whilst my mates started to pull in smaller reef fish. Suddenly on the drop the rod loads up and started peeling drag. The fish hooked was solid and felt so heavy that I fought I snagged the bottom until it started running. Started pumping it up and after 10 mins of fighting it I managed to pull up a freakin’ banjo ray. Had a few laughs and snapped a pic before chucking it back in. We moved spots and drove to a reef way off manly beach and I stayed with lures. My mates then started pulling in bigger fish such as wrasse and sweep whilst I was getting nothing on jigs, plastics or vibes. And to make it worse, with it being my first time that far inshore and 3rd time fishing off a boat I got pretty sea sick. It started off with a slightly sore stomach but as it got worse I couldn’t take it anymore and just sat down whilst the others fished. They then pulled in the first blue groper of the trip and after that more started to roll in. There was even a singular tiny rat king landed which momentarily cured me off my seasickness for about 5 mins. Then I decided to just make myself let it all out as my mates were saying it would make me feel better afterwords. It was like nothing i had ever experienced before and left my throat sore for the rest of the trip. I finally started to dabble in a bit of bait again on the ice rod as I still wasn’t well enough to fish lures again and managed to land a groper as well. We then started to head back as the wind started to worsen when I had the brilliant idea of trolling some deep divers on the way back. We kept hooking up on the troll and after making my mates dad drive back and forth a couple times (each time saying it was the last time but then hooking up again we finally headed back in with 5 more bonito in the esky. We got back to my mates house and distributed the fish, with me taking a groper and some smaller reef fish. We had actually bagged out on groper after an hour and landed 6 good sized groper that trip and a ton of smaller reef species such as the earlier mentioned sweep, wrasse, leatherjacket etc. All in all, the seasickness was a bit of a pain but the amount of fish we got was worth it.

    Cheers,

    Albert
