Be a bit wary about spending scarce holiday time fishing Pupuke. I used to live nearby and spent hundreds of hours fishing it for the massive total of two small rainbows. Fortunately there were enough rudd, perch, tench and wild goldfish to keep me occupied. On other occasions it’s fished quite well because for a while Fish and Game NZ stocked it with two year old hatchery fish every second year. These fish were used to hatchery pellets so they were pretty desperate in the wild - a lot of people got good catches if they fished after a release and didn’t care that their ‘trout fishing’ involved pursuing ex-hatchery fish slowly starving to death. In any case, Pupuke has little chance of sustaining a wild trout population so without recent stocking it would be coarse fish only.

Perhaps find out from Fish and Game NZ if they have done any recent releases there or try to talk to someone who actually fishes there.

otherwise, I’m not going to advise because my knowledge is too out of date.

I'll be happy enough with a perch or the others, did you target perch on lures and the others on bait?

Fantastic to see you living it up in your youth, like you should, Albert! You certainly aren’t phased by adventure on your own, like I was at your age.

I’m just waiting to see the reports when you eventually get your own car and maybe even a boat!

Have you got your fly outfit yet?

Not yet haha, I'm planning for something big next year so all my income has been going towards saving up for that

Hi I’ve fished north island twice there are snapper galore also plenty of kingfish with a kayak you should have a great time and dont need anything special in the way of outfits i have only used pilchards there and have done well

It's just a basic plastic rental kayak haha, I'm not old enough to hire the Sea kayaks so I don't think I'll be getting any kingies but there should be plenty of snapper in the bay

    Hey All,

I'll be visiting Auckland for a few days this holiday and I really want to bring a rod, I'll be living in a hotel right next to the water in the port area, this is my first time visiting the north island and 2nd time actually visiting new zealand, so I know nothing about fishing there. My current game plan is to bring a 3000 sized reel, and to hire a kayak in mission bay if i can fish there and drop either soft plastics grubs or bait. Could someone please help me out with general info like where I can fish and where I cannot?

    Thanks in advance,

    Albert

I just realised that there is a lake pupuke stocked with trout 😅, guess im bringing my 2500 and my 3000

You need a Gold Bomber or three in your collection to throw over the shallow flats in summer, and also to bring up north when you start travelling there with your Curado in early adulthood (it seems inevitable that you will😎).

Also if you want a swim bait that is not intimidatingly heavy, try a Fishcraft Dr Glide. I think the biggest model is only about 19g - about the same as a gold bomber. Very modestly priced too, from what I've seen.

Going up north is one of the things I’m planning to do at the end of the year holiday haha, can’t wait to throw some topwater lures in the gold coast canals or maybe go up to NT. Either that or I visit cooks island/ Christmas Island for GT 😎

    Hi Albert,

Also consider getting one of the larger sugapens (they do a 120mm). Firstly, they are a great lure to work on your walk the dog technique. Secondly, the kings will hit it in the summer when the bigger schools are around.

    Regards,

    Derek

My mate eesh sold me all his stuff last week as he’s back in Cananda now and he gave me all his stuff so now I have his jigs, topwater(he’s got the big 120mm sugarpen) and a lot of topwater stuff as well- spinnerbaits and cranks

  8. Hey All,

Picked up a new zodias rod at the boat show for my curado K 200HG and looking for some particular lure suggestions, the rod is rated 10-25lb braid and 10-35g lure weight which is perfect for what I'm doing, (a little bit of everything) I can do topwater, swimbaits, plastics, vibes , jigging off the kayak on both landbased and kayak as the rod is only 6 foot. I'm putting 20lb berkley x9 on the curado and going to be using 15-20lb mono leader depending on what type of lure I'll be throwing. Any general tips are greatly appreciated as this is the first time I'll properly get into using the curado.

    Cheers,

    Albert

    Hi guys,

Don't have much experience with brands on trebles and Split rings but i found the ones on daiwa infeet crank and double clutch sucks.

Would anyone be able to recommend some brands that doesn't rust so easily?

Also not sure about the Split ring and treble size of double clutch

    really appreciate the help

yeah the hooks and split rings on daiwa lures rust really easy, for split rings i'd use either bkk or decoy. For trebles I'd use gamakatsu or bkk

I watch an American fishing YouTuber whose signature lure he uses and sells is a 9mm round turned into a spinner, that thing is deadly on trout. Maybe make a .22 version?

correction* he doesn't sell them but its NW fishing secrets if you're interested (hopefully this doesn't go against fishraider rules)

Don't get me wrong, like you I watch lots of YouTube music videos finding songs for my son to perform but gee those adds can be a pain. Are you using the free YouTube or the paid version ? I just use the free one.

One of my best friends uses the ad free version but I'm at this stage for the cost I am still happy to use the free one.

Just a little tip if you use google chrome to watch youtube you can download an extension that blocks ads on youtube and any other websites, keep in mind though that some websites such as articles and journals require you to disable it otherwise you cannot access the website. I'll refrain from putting the name up because of the fishraider forum rules but just pm me for a guide.

Heard lots of mixed reviews about banjos, quite a few say they're good deep fried and I was going to use the head for shark bait. Definitely want to try shovel nose, apparently very popular in Europe as fish and chips.

What about rays? Have a indigenous mate who loves them but also have another mate who says they're a bit chewy. I was thinking to do a thai green curry inspired thing with chilli's and coconut with the ray. But don't really want to waste a life if it's a bad idea.

    Thanks

i missed out on that opportunity a couple years back when I only fished bait. Was fishing middle harbor with prawns and pillies and a 1 metery shovel nose decided to eat my prawn, thought it was weed at first because of how heavy it was and it wasn't fighting much, didn't know they were good eating at the time and just let it go. At least I got a trev for a feed a couple minutes before the shovelnose.

You need to start a diary  noting what tide cycle , moon phase and lure he is using when you are not there . Maybe he is fishing a different tide or time of day when you are not there ? I don’t believe in curses or luck ,although I did convince my mate he was cursed ! Fishing the hunter river at Hexham for bream using nippers , we tied up to the pylon and fished right next to it - 20 min in and I had landed two reasonable bream , he hadn’t lost a bait ! He began to give me looks like he could kill me so I went over and dropped a nipper right next to his and hooked a big bream , I’m sure he gave me a spray but I didn’t hear it as I was screaming with laughter 🤣🤣 I then convinced him the reason why he wasn’t catching anything was some sort of smell and that before we went out I petted his dog which masked the smell , next trip I arrived at his house to find him rolling around on the front lawn with the dog - poor thing didn’t know what was going on - all this affection all of a sudden 🤣🤣🤣.

Anyhow Albert , I suspect your mate is doing something different as noted above and a diary will show this up . Keep trying and you will succeed!

Should've started a diary long time ago as my mates leaving back to Canada for around 2 years to look at jobs, he's going to come back if the job market is worse than Australia as he has already been working as physio for good pay, but when he leaves I'm going to buy all his jigs off him and maybe then I'll start catching again :1sweatdrop:

No mate I don’t, I will have a look at a few of my FB feeds and see if anyone has reported anything but I don’t recall seeing anything recently.
When you say you are jigging in the harbour , which harbour are you fishing ? I was assuming Sydney harbour?
Salmon can be frustrating at times , they can be busting up mall around you but won’t touch anything you present to them because they are eating tiny bait fish known as eyes . It is fly fishing time when this happens.

Yeah Sydney harbour, it’s just so frustrating because my mate always catches a king when I’m not there :1crybaby::lol:

You can drop into their shop for the most up to date report , they usually put a video report out every Friday as above.

The areas shown in the map below are the deeper sections , lots of current though ,if I were to fish any of the break walls it would be the northern one but they all look pretty gnarly- I think they rebuilt them as Lucy’s wall was way harder to fish last time I was there compared to 20yrs ago . You can always walk the beach casting lures .

I know a guy that has been getting a few nice salmon in the mouth of the lane cove river but I think they are everywhere in the harbour right now , I would be trying milsons point, neutral bay , Clifton gardens and places similar to that - really anywhere there is reasonable water depth and you can get a decent cast in you are in with a chance of either a salmon or tailor .

Sorry for bothering you so much but do you know if there are any bonnies still up in the northern beaches e.g Avoca

Yeah I’m going to be definitely walking the beach now that I’ve thought of it, I’ll pick up some 40-50 gram knight metals and straight retrieve all the way back

Thanks for the info mate, my fishing has been pushed to Saturday so I’ll watch the report, if not I’ll either walk the beaches casting halco twisties or try jigging in the harbour again (I’ve been jigging for 6 hours for around 4-5 sessions and still haven’t caught anything 😢)

  18. Hey Raiders,

Looking to target salmon in either lake Mac or off the Swansea break walls near Reid’s park, or anywhere doesn’t have to be up north either. I’ll be fishing land based and probably with either 5000size reel with 30lb mainline and rod to match or 3000 sized stradic with 10lb line and rod to match, I’ll probably be throwing halco twisties and maybe slow pitch jigs or some mullet that I’ve fillet up. I don’t have any experience with salmon and jigging for kingfish has been slow so i figured I’d get into some winter species. (my mate somehow catches kings whenever Im not there but it’s always a donut if I’m there) All info is appreciated

    cheers,

    Albert

Been trying to get a fish on lures for what feels like an eon. Had a couple great people on here help me out to no avail. Anyone know any great places around the Botany area to flick a few lures? I have soft plastics, blades, divers and topwaters. Mainly looking for bream but I'll take just about anything, heck I'll be glad if a tailor can chew through my line because it'll at least mean something ate my lure.

    Any help is appreciated.

I’ve also had a fish drought as well, the usual flatties haven’t been appearing so I’ve just been targeting kings in the past few sessions
