    Hey Raiders,

Just typing this up at a fancy restaurant by the water, waiting to go back for jewies after dinner so I figured I’d do a live report while waiting. I arrived at my secret spot ready for jewfish the entire week, armed with my light snapper setup, a couple vibes and a dream. I started off at 6pm fishing Samaki vibelicous in 14g but had no luck, only a few small hook ups and bites from what I presume to be either small flathead or tiny soapies. Now getting ready to enter the restaurant nearby, I tied on the Alibaba ecogear rip-off I’ve been raving about waited. On the second cast I casted into the inlet of the place I was fishing. A couple lifts later…

I’m so stoked to have caught a jewie on the first time I tried for them and on my birthday as well! I’m gonna go back to my dinner now and hopefully will report more in the next couple of hours.

    Cheers,

    Albert

No luck at the end as I reckon the schoolies moved off when I came back at high tide. However there was some bream action on topwater, but no hookups

I’m not 100% sure Albert, but if it floats, I’d assume it would work.
I just use small chunks cut off a polystyrene fruit box or those white, figure eight things that is used to protect packages.

Instead of using cotton, use small chunks of polystyrene or bean bag peas.
No need for floatant or to tie, just feed the hook through and you’re good to go.

Are A4 foam sheets from officeworks ok?

I'll try both the cotton swabs and the bean bag beans

I guess it's time to raid the bean bag chair

  8. Hey raiders,

Any recommendations for fly floatants? I don't think i can get down to a tackle shop but have been reading that stuff like vaseline and silicone spray works. I'll just be using a cotton swab or cotton balls for makeshift bread flies for mullet

    Cheers

you could have nabbed it from any of the rock pools on the way honestly. Grow a stock pile for luderick fishing. I have tried scouring parramatta river for weed but can;t find any. and not sure if some of the sample weed i found in local pond/creek works

Do you reckon just a plastic bucket and salt water? maybe some sand as well

Might try bringing some aquarium water when I go and maybe mixing a little bit of the salt to acclimate them?

Addition to above.  If you want to keep in fresh water, try aclimatising them in a large bucket of water from where you caught them.  Then take some water out each day and replace with fresh.  Do this for a few days at least before putting into your tank.  If you already have an aquarium you probably know you should be aging water from the tap for a few days first to remove cadded chloride.   Ron

    was just thinking that 🤣

I've kept bait poddies for over a month in a 60 litre drum with a 240v airator.   They are pretty tough and change water after 3 days and then once a week.  Fed very litlle, just dried breadcrumbs as overfeeding fouls the water quickly.  I have also had a few in a salt water tank with under gravel filter etc and they were easy eating bits of prawn like everyone else.  Did well until I caught a 1 inch lionfish who quickly grew and ate everything in the tank.  Big mistake.  Ron

Was the 60 litre drum freshwater? If so was the water change tap water with prime?

  12. Hey Raiders,

Just asking around if anyone's had experience keeping mullet in a tank as aquarium fish (going to be used as live bait sooner or later), I've got a 200L freshwater tank with a filter that lets water back into the tank aerating it in the process. I've done some research and found that mullet can live in freshwater but I want to be sure before I convert my tank. Also if anyone successfully kept them as pets what do you feed them?

    Any info is greatly appreciated,

    Cheers,

    Albert

A bit surprised they didn’t chase you off fishing there… isn’t there a flash hotel and restaurants on that wharf?

Glad that they didn’t though! Cracker flatly!

No, they actually allow you to fish the bottom and top parts of the big wharf.

  14. The fishing was done on Sunday but I’ve been a bit busy with assessments and so on, I’ve been looking at cheap Alibaba lures for the past months and they finally arrived a week ago so I took the Sunday out to test them. I didn’t have the chance to fish some microjigs I ordered as I got kicked off the marina after loosing a banger 50cm trev on a zman grub (I was running 4lb braid on a bream setup). After getting cooked I switched spots to a place in the harbour where I could get both blackfish and fish for jewies, flattie and bream. I switched over to my heavier setup and tied on a 14g Alibaba ecogear rip off and ended the day with some cracker fish. I managed to hook up on my first cast with the vibe resulting in a tiny pinky pinned well by the assist hooks. After that came two little flattie around 40cm after getting them back in the drink I tied on a luderick float rig I made onto my light bream rod which had coincidentally the amount of split shot weights I needed to make the float slowly sink so there was no tension when the luderick grabbed my bread. With some simple bread in the water as burley I had a massive school of both luderick and bream busting up at my feet and in 5 minutes I ended up with 3 legal sized luderick and a legal bream of which I only kept the biggest 40cm luderick for dinner. With my time running out I made a final attempt with the vibe and I’m so glad I did as in my first (and last) couple of casts with some help from a blokes net I was able to land a big 62cm model flattie (biggest fish I’ve caught on lures so far) which was safely released back to spawn. Overall incredibly happy with the results of a 6 dollar knock off lure and will definitely order more.

( no photo of the luderick as it went into the wok to steam before I could take a photo:mfr_lol: )

    Hi guys,

need some ideas on what type of gear to bring on sandflat to assist with quickly unhooking fish and putting it somewhere without trudging back to my gear and tackle box and bucket on the shore which could be almost 100m away.

Because its not very efficient what i am doing

Edit:should have worded this better What I meant is if there are storage solutions to have gear on water with me and keep fish with me instead of the bucket and tackle box on the shore

Keeper net with a plastic bottle half full with water, helps with keeping it afloat

  16. For all you lure makers, this is my favorite american youtuber for making lures, he's made lures such as a facehugger from the Alien franchise and some other very gnarly swimbaits and divers. He's also made three videos of catching bass on blocks of wood as well.
