I feel a bit embarrassed posting about catching a fish as small as a whiting on fly on this forum with some many pics of massive fish on fly!
But for me, whiting are my fish of a thousand casts on fly. They're really tough.
I chased whiting for 20 years on lures and ended up doing okay with surface lures over the summer months - the lures I found were most consistent were pencil poppers that throw spray forward, my personal favourite was the Zip Baits Skinny Pop Jnr.
The fly I've tied that throws spray forward in a way closest to the Skinny Pop a disco shrimp style surface fly with a small sequin disk at the front to act as a cup. I've modelled the fly on a design from Brett Winn who operate BWC flies in Tuggerah. He has some videos of how to tie them.
I've tied a variety of colours from black to white and use the darker ones when the water is dirty, lighter when clear.
The big challenge for me in targeting whiting is getting really long casts in over the flats, because I've found whiting like fast retrieves and that brings my fly back to the rod pretty quick, particularly when casting from my canoe!
Just wondering if anyone on the forum has done well on whiting with flies and if they have any learnings to share?
I managed to capture the strike of the whiting in the pic on my Go Pro which is quite interesting - you'll see I give the fly half a dozen strips, then pause, and when I start again the whiting inhales it. At first I thought is was a bream.
Cheers
