  1. Hi everyone, good friday we decided to have a bash outside for some kingies and snapper. After doing no good in the port stephnes trailerboat comp we were hoping to land some decent kingies off Sydney. We got some livies and headed out, had a go at the mugs but all that seemed to be there were some bonito down deep. We then tried our favourite spot, spot X and within 15 minutes my 8kg outfit started buzzing.. After a 20 minute fight i managed to land a 7-8 kilogram king measuring 90cm. Not long after we put out our two 30kg outfits and managed to land a 12 and 14kg king within 15 minutes. The 12 measuring 110cm and the 14 measuring 115cm. My cousing also landed a 14kg kingfish on his cruize craft. After all the commotion we had one livey left and whacked her out hoping for the rod to buckle on one more sydney king. It did, but absolutely monstered us and went straight for the reef. We lost it on a fully locked up drag. All in all a good day. My cousin dropped another 20kg + yesturday so we are deffinately going to have another bash this weekend! My boats names IRE-ANA so if youse see me out there dont be afraid to say hi!

    Welcome to FR.

    Ummm, got any pics????????

  2. Thanks all for the replies.

Yes it was definitely tasty and fed my family of 4.

I spoke to a charter operator on the water who said he caught 2 Dorys of similar size 2 weekends ago as well. I also saw on the same morning another guy boating a smaller dory right next to me. So the Dorys apparently are out at the moment.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  3. Quick belated report from last Friday.

Launched from Balmoral in my kayak into great conditions just before sun up.

Couldn't find any squid or yakkas at the island, so headed out towards North Head hoping to pick some up along the way.

Found a heap of yakkas on the sounder but could not entice them to bite. Managed 3 yakkas but was tough going.

I had some left over squid heads from a previous trip and deployed them. They didn't last long at all. picked up a number of rat kings around 55-60cm. deployed the yakkas - same story, but on the second yakka I picked up a solid dory which went 49cm. Nice surprise and a nice PB. The yakka was stuck in the Dory's gigantic mouth, so I reached in and gently removed him. The yakka was still alive although slightly shocked and shaken. I put him back on the hook and redeployed for the second time and picked up another rat king.

All in all, a great day to be on the water paddling and fishing.

  4. You may have seen the post 2 weekends ago where I took my 10 year old son out for a fish and he surprised himself and me by hooking onto, and landing a 90 centimetre Kingy! Well, this morning we went back out again (he's been bugging me every since!) and sure enough he hooks and lands another one! This one was just over 80 centimetres. Caught on a yellowtail like the last one, he brought it all the way to the net on his own.

If it has to be someone else other than myself catching good fish, then I'm glad it was a kid. Congrats to your son.

    Cheers,

  5. Despite the water looking very average after weekends downpours, we scored kings of 1m, 1.12m and 1.14m at a little tiny hump near Longy on Monday. Fat, fit fish. Would only take slimeys, not yakkas. Fun trying to stop em in 6 fathoms!!! Temp was 22.4C. Current going uphill.

Mate was out same day and went to check FAD. Lots of baby dollies. He also found a full sized floating tree (pretty rare off Sydney)absolutely packed with baby dollies. Heavy rain has some benefits.

    Congrats on some healthy hoodies.

Thanks for the report. Always good to know whats going on and where.

  6. Yep i was out yesterday, bit a late start and with no luck on the squid i was forced to go with yakkas, nothing all morning except for one rat...

Did see a couple seals sunbaking at mol. pt, must be alot of bait in the bay now would think that would heat up the fishing?

ps. Big thankyou to quintrex480 for all his help! i will start landing squid one day! after that, bring on the kings!( its good to be optimistic right :yahoo:)

    Hi Taleb87,

I was out too, I think I saw you, but wasnt sure. Should have come and said hi - next time.

I picked some good sized squid, too good to use as bait. Still DR the smaller ones all along the coast for zero, so your not alone.

  7. Nice fish boys looks like a awsome day. Going out on Thursday hopefully won't be to many boats out there. You wanna give up any good spots that's would be nice lol

Going out on Sunday might see you out there

    Catch ya later

    Luke/ aero

I might be able to head out early on Thursday as well. Let me know if any of you guys want to catch up.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

  8. boating supply stores sell 7 amp hour batteries for $30 and charger $25 a full charge would probably last 2 long trips.

i been using them for 2 years, and had to replace battery once. i run a lowrance elite 5 DSi combo with no probblems.

Try searching for 12V Lithium Ion security camera batteries on epray. I got a 6800mah battery. Easily gets 8hrs runtime and only costs around $20-30. They are also very compact (size of a cigarette pack) so perfect for kayaks. Only issue is they can be fragile and some people say they can possibly explode. I have mine in a sealed waterproof case so it should be fine, only time will tell, but after 6months, so far so good.

  9. Never had one when i first started fishing 40yrs ago, used to fish off land marks. Still fish of land marks from Maroubra to Broken Bay. Still catch fish. Soon once all the old fellas pass off, so will their old marks. Many have been lost already. Even now it is getting hard to find some old marks because the skyline has changed so much, but once you learn them youll never forget them. A Question for you.. What happens when the batteries go when you forgot to charge it? Do you go home or would you go back to your marks and use them?.

We were talking about a sounder, not GPS. I rarely use my GPS fishing the harbour, but use my sounder all the time.

  10. hey there.im new to this site and still fairly green when it comes to fishing.anyway i launched my kayak off forty baskets today with a bag of pilchards and my new lowrance fishfinder(never used a fishfinder before).the fishfinder was quickly packed away out of frustration and off i went....in 2 hours i managed to catch two 40cm flathead,3 plate size snapper at roughly 36cm each, one travelly at 38cm a stingray and two massive busts.no fishfinder and no boat!!!im happy with that.

Thats a great session. Imagine what you could do with a sounder once you're all set up..

  11. My MRS only said yesterday I should get one lol.

How much am I looking at?

    Would love to get started!

    Where do you frequent?

    Cheers

    Paul

    Hey Paul,

get a decent kayak. You will be dissappointed if you get a crappy one.

Budget around $1500 for a half decent one. Hobie mirage drive yaks will be around $2000+.

Secondhand will be around $200-500 cheaper, and is a very good option.

Once you have confidence with your kayak, you can pretty much go where ever you want so long as the conditions are suitable and safe and within your abilities. Your typical range depends on your fitness but a comfortable morning paddle/peddle would be around 5-10Km. Therefore Sydney Harbour Lower/Upper and Middle harbour are all ideal places to kayak fish. Long Reef and Clovelly is also popular amongst the kayak fishers.

I get more satisfaction catching fish from my yak than I do from the boat.

    Hope that helps,

    J

  12. Just got back from a 4 hour session of long reef and ended up with a donut. Fished everywhere wide, wall and even went to check out a few wrecks. I think i must have the worst luck. Did anyone else try today. I did see 2 other boats but didn't look like anyone was getting anything.

    Yee

    Thats a surprise.

What time were you out there?

    What technique were you using?

Did you try livies, squid, etc?

    J

  13. Anyone thinking of going to the peak make sure you have plenty of wire trace. Went for a quick run with the boat and dropped a few baits down but trying to get pasted the jackets was impossible. Every return there was no bait and hook. 50lb mono just does not with stand a chance. :ranting2:

    Tight Lines

    Thanks for the heads up!

  14. Gday Raiders,

Getting livies in Sydney Harbour first thing in the morning isn't a problem (most of the time).

However, more often than not, trying to get livies when the sun is high in the sky is a problem for me.

Im assuming the livies go into deeper water during this time.

Anyone like to help me out and suggest any good reliable spots to pick up livies?

I would like to do some arvo sessions targeting kingies, and prefer not to collect livies the night before.

    Cheers,

    J

  15. I've used the tournament grade (Gray in color). Compared to their standard braid (green in color), it is smaller in diameter and definitely lasts longer. If you can get it on sale (30-50% off) its definitely good value. Almost as good as PowerPro.

  16. lifejackets will not replace common sense! how simple does "if you cant swim, stay away from rock fishing sound?" My sincerest condolences to the families and the people left behind on what will be a very sad day... but sometimes we DO have to accept responsibility for our actions and unfortunately I don't believe forcing fishermen to wear lifejackets will save for lives, it may even cause more deaths as they "promote an even greater sense of security" and will lead to more danger and risk taking... then the battering on rocks that you cannot get away from.

We have fire bans on certain days, why don't we just have rock fishing bans on certain days based on safety criteria or swell size??

Don't we have enough rules and regulations as it is? I disagree on banning. We are over policed in everything we do as it is. We all have a brain - use it. Education and information is the way to go.

Don't compare fire bans with a big swell fishing ban - bush fires risk the lives of many as the result of 1 idiot. if you fish and drown because you are ill prepared you really dont affect anyone but yourself (and your family).
