    Nice effort there.

    I have the same yak and a very similar setup.

    I think Ive got the same sounder, but have mounted it up on top of the centre console lid. How do you find having the Sounder in the compartment between your legs? Is it easy enough to read? In the position I have mine, it gets wet easily and a wet screen makes it very difficult to read. If I can keep it dry its a top position.

    I'd go the Ugly Stik, they're a great rod and hard to break.

    They're warranty is good also.

    Im gonna risk it a little and go for the shimano teremar. Looks like it will match my needs the best. Im also gonna grab the tiger lite as a backup. I will probably sell 1 of them after trying them both out.

    Hi Guys,

    I just need some advice on rod selection.

    I have an opportunity to pick up some rods from the US.

    I want to match it to my Stradic5000 spooled with 30lb PowerPro.

    Main purpose will be flicking big plastics on 1/2 - 1 1/2oz jig heads. Also would use it to live bait for kingies.

    Here is my shortlist:

    e21 BWCS-731H-S Bluewater Carrot Stix Spinning Rod 7'3" 15-30lb

    Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Rod 7' 14-40lb

    Shimano Teramar Inshore Southeast Heavy Spinning Rod 8' 15-30lb

    Shimano Teramar Inshore Southeast X.Heavy Spinning Rod 8' 15-40lb

    My preference is the Teramar X.Heavy. Do you think it would be too heavy? The Teremar looks like its very similar to the TCurve we get here in Aus.

    Hi Jeff,

    u mean u can't tie the braid directly to swivel? I did it all the time as I dunno how to tie a knot for 2 line to join together. So what's the best proposal to join the leader with braid?

    I normally use modified albright. But now will be trying slim beauty - just for a change.

    Also if you really want to be super sure, tie a bimini double in the braid first, then the albright.

    Just a real quick report.

    hit the harbour from my kayak this morning.

    Found some kings near Old Mans Hat.

    First one was solid and took a livie and head straight down. My 30Lb braid which was tied directly to the swivel failed. Never again will I take a short cut and not use any shock leader.

    Second livie down, and this time Im guessing a big squid was interested and managed to steal my yakka.

    I landed a fat 80cm king on plastic (as I was out of bait). Whilst bleeding the fish, I managed to lose it overboard with my lip grippers still hanging from his mouth. Very Dissappointed, but I did have a laugh as my mate did the exact same thing last week.

    Good to be out on the yak again, so all good. Just need a new set of lip grippers now.

    Seems like the Sydney rats have grown a bit bigger, so good news for us all......

    sliding snell ARRRRGGGGHHH

    Snell both hooks so you dont need to worry about the bead. When the top hook slides down it will stop at the eye of the bottom hook without damaging the line or knot as the knot is below the eye.

    When attaching the top hook, I use a separate lighter mono to perform the sliding snell attachment. Much easier to handle and much tidier too. Also only need 4-6 wraps.

    Just a little tip when using a sliding knot, place a small bead between your two hooks. When the top hook gets a hit it will slide down and the bead will stop the eye of the hook ripping into your bottom knot.

    How do you guys weight the bigger stick baits? Just a ball sinker in front of the hook? Or do you mainly fish them unweighted?

    I dunno about Jim and Andrew, but I use up to 1 and 1.5 Oz jig heads in a 5/0 and 6/0 hook size. But go as light as possible, All depends on the depth and current strength you want to fish.

    Hey all,

    Im looking at getting a new prop for my Yamaha 70HP 2-Stroke.

    Originally it had a 13 1/4" 17Pitch Alloy 3 Blade, which I replaced about 2 years ago with a 15Pitch Solas 3 blade Alloy Prop.

    The Difference that I noticed was slightly lower top end speed (dont really care) but better acceleration and easier to get on the plane.

    Now Im looking at improving fuel economy without loosing the easier planing ability.

    Do you think a 4 blade 15Pitch stainless steel solution would work? Im hoping to get lower RPM at planing speeds, but still have the power to accelerate out of the hole quickly. How much of an difference will it make?

    Im heading out tomorrow most likely, so will poke my head out past the heads, but will probably just end up in middle harbour somewhere.

    Anyone know if the water is warmer out at the Twelve?

    Nice 10min session there.

    I think that bit of water in middle harbour is pretty clean, and I wouldnt hesitate eating fish from there, especially flatties.

    Maybe if anything, C&R bream, mullet and tailor as they accumulate the most heavy metals.

    Good on you for offering the flatty to a fellow fisher anyway.

    Sounds good mate! Did you notice if there were any salmon schools around out the heads or anything?

    We were out on Saturday around north head and came across a solid school of salmon, spent over an hour trying everything to try and get them to bite. I only got a single hit on a trolled hardbody, but didnt get the treble to stick. Very frustrating to say the least.

    I would have much preferred if they were bonnies than salmon. much easier to get them to strike, not to mention they taste a thousand times better.

    i have run 2 scotty 1050's for a few years now and never had a issue with either of them

    the only thing i have done to them is change from wire to braid a few months ago

    both brands make great downriggers so either one is a good choice

    PM me for info on how to get them both dirt cheap

    Can I ask why people are replacing the wire with braid?

    Wouldnt you be at risk of losing your bomb to the dreaded LJ if using braid over wire?

    I am just setting up my DR now but havent yet tested it - Still plan to use the wire, unless there's a good reason to switch over to braid.
