  1. Generally 60lb leader should suffice but quite often there are no stopping some kings. I'd say that you either hooked a fairly significant fish which found something to bust you on or you had a little nick in your leader which weakened it. If you find this is happening to often then 80lb+ may be necessary.

  2. Hey Josh have you tried using some egimax on the jigs? Everytime I re apply I seem to get hits and even hookups on the squid. its a great little tool to have with you whilst fishing and the money spent on the spray is well worth it as it can sometimes have u there fishing for squid for not long at all when you will realise that you have many squid on your livey tank ready for that days fishing..

    good luck

    Hi Sean,

I take it that egimax is some sort of attractant spray, i have some of the stimulate one but keep forgetting to take it out, hopefully this should help also.

  3. You need to get in the zone. Are you letting your jigs sink? Did you get any snags? If you didn't get a snag, you are not in the zone. The Cephalopods hang very deep. Try moving around also. We don't give a spot more than 20 minutes. If you don't get one within that time, they are not there. Move on. Sometimes, a move of 20-30 mteres is enough to find a patch!

    Thanks Ceph,

We are definitely in the zone as we (my brother and step dad) have gone through about $60 in squid jigs in the last 3 outings, seeing the yo-zuri/yamashita/daiwa jigs are $20 each. What size do you think works best, we have mainly been using 2.5 but 1.8 as well, we're finding the 1.8 takes forever to sink, and probably isn't getting in the zone, but we have not even seen a follow from a squid which is what's worrying me. And each spot we have moved probably 20-30m after 10-15min of nothing, and then onto another location. Some days we have tried up to 7 or 8 locations (including small moves in between) for not even a single follow let alone a patch, i won't be back out for a few weeks so hopefully we'll do better the next time we are out.

  4. josh i get out there in my 4m tinnie if the weather is good so you should have no probs in your boat.

Yeh probably could, how far out are the fads? Even if we did get wet it wouldn't matter much, we got rained on for an hour today

  5. Well done mate, the triumphs are great (apart from the fact we're yet to land a kingfish in ours), we have the 170CC with 75hp optimax. Great boats, gunwhales could be higher though on ours, so not terribly keen to go chase my first dollie in it at this stage :1prop: .

  6. Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Good to know i'm not the only one struggling, i think you have the right idea brickman, chasing the bonnies with the chance of kings. Being saturated in water for the first hour we were out didnt help and as mentioned probably affected the fishing to some extent. Hopefully i'll be able to break the drought next time we go out. Mainly hoping to get something on my unchristened Daiwa gear and get used to fighting stuff on it before i go back chasing GT's in north QLD for when another 50lber appears.

    O well.

    Cheers guys

  7. Hi Dan,

We have the 450s which i'm assuming is just the smaller version. It works quite well, has pretty easily navigatable features, great screen resolution and picture quality. Only downside i find is try to pull the cover off it, though i'm sure that i'm probably just not doing it right.

  8. At the ramp at 6 and straight off to middle head in search of squid, it poured just about the whole way, and we looked quite pathetic 3 of us sitting under a small umbrella in the :1badmood: to try and catch squid. Once again we failed to do this as we have in the past 3 outings in the new boat. (no idea what the problem is, never had this trouble before! Can anyone help me!!!)

Luckily we found a patch of baby yakkas around manly and got 15+ of them (not before getting twice as many small leatherjackets, Any tips for avoiding them?)

So we went and fished a normally producing spot for a number of species to not even get a hit from a king and only catch an undersize trevally, couple of flounder and too many small snapper. The guys in a small tinny next to us got smoked once and landed another king but we didnt have a touch on the live or dead yakkas. Tried around Watsons, and a couple of spots up Middle Harbour for not much, so released the remaining live yakkas and went home!

  9. You need to set up a burley trail that is quite consistently flowing, a very fine mash of bread crumbs, tuna oil, old bits of bait and stuff should do the trick, then put some really small bits of pillie or prawn onto a long shank hook about size 10 and you should get a few no worries. Otherwise you can try using bait jigs in amongst the burley trail.

  10. Well, another crappy day fishing wise, seeing the wind had dropped we decided to go out and try and get some kings for the first time in ages. I'm beginning to think there is something painted on the bottom of our boat seeing in the last 2 trips we have tried at least 8 spots each time for not even a follow from a squid. We managed to find a patch of small yakkas but being unprepared for them, they were finding it very hard to get the tiny pieces of fish market squid off the size 6 long shank, the frustration of being unable to get any fresh bait is nearly unbearable! Anyway we tried some spots around the main harbour and middle harbour for zilch, not even a hit from a king. Only got small snapper on the light rods, which added to a very disappointing day. Hopefully we can catch some squid tomorrow and finally get some kings.

    how did everyone else do?

  11. Great bream mate, squid are extremely abundant in cowan, long bay and twilight inlet are great places to target them. They are arrow squid so i wouldn't plan on catching them for a feed. Yakka's can be caught at various places in cowan, waratah bay is a good spot.
