  1. Wow what a huge day in average conditions, so much for the forecast.  Stopping at the FAD paid off big time it looks like some of them are getting up there in size as well.  After making the call to persevere with heading to browns it is good to see you boating a few fish from the deep to add to the catch.   I knew it wouldn't take you long to come up with a solution for the foggy screen.   Great report Zoran.

I keep thinking of the huge bar cod the lad was trying to show us ... perhaps its cuz!

Are you referring to the midship bollard on the boat? I've found that very practical and a huge time saver. Sinker wise yes I'm ready but I still have to top up some braid on Tanacoms and recalibrate the line out meters (see link below) - probably tomorrow afternoon - and then sort out aligning crew calendars to conditions forecast 🤣 ...  keep your's updated if your interested ??

Yes the midship bollard would make life so much easier.  I am keen if the timing works out.

Thanks Jason ... yup can't complain about that feed and the conditions were to forecast -  I also tweaked the Zipwake curves since you were out last - couldn't be happier with the ride now.  Whatever the snagged fish was - it was big - it bent that rod, took the rig down (approx 18kg drag) and that was that ... yup frustrating. I loosened the drag off and left slack line several time hoping it would swim away clear but no luck .... aaargh.  I also just finished replenishing the sinker stock with the spare lead at home - thank you again !!  (we lost 5 on the day - 3 to toads and 2 to snags) ... BUT THAT'S FISHING !!!

18kg of drag that must have been huge!   I was impressed with the ride when we were out.  Handling my boat solo by myself since the trip the wharf had a missing bollard leaving only one to tie off to had me reflecting on your system and some mods I should be making.   It looks like you are ready for the next few trips.

  4. Thank’s  Zoran for inviting me along on DevOcean it was great it finally worked out. I spent the weekend hoping the weather predictions for Monday would hold which it did.

Next time I will try to catch my share of the bait!  Driving out to the FAD I expected to see the water temp creep up but that wasn’t to be unfortunately but we still managed a few fish in great conditions. As for the flatties they were elusive again despite our best efforts.

I really enjoyed the day with you on DevOcean seeing the methods and systems that you use.  I will be filleting and skinning Dollies your way in the future.

  5. With the hot day predicted we kicked off pretty early hoping to avoid the worst of it, it turned out to be a calm overcast day and not as bad as forecast.  Plan one was to chase some squid the first 20 minutes or so was slow until we found the jigs that worked.  After that we had a steady stream of calamari playing along and a couple of feisty ones giving us a spray.

W e set up the downrigger to see if we could convert a squid into a king with no success, so moved onto the artificial reef in Yarra Bay.  There was plenty of action there with huge slimies, a salmon that thought it was best to do laps around the other lines and and some undersized flatties.  We moved on in search of some flatties on plastic with no success so called it a day.

It was nice to be on the water again especially without the crowds.  Sorry no pictures today.

Crabs can be a bit difficult at times to net. Just let go of the bait near the surface, especially if they see the net coming up.

Most of us use enviro type nets - very small mesh which means the net is slow to move through the water. The crab will outswim the net most times. Sometimes I have let go of the line then scooped with both hands before the crab can swim off.

A net with larger mesh is better for netting crabs - the net moves faster through the water, most crabs will not outswim it.

Prawning nets are the best, HOWEVER, crabs tangle up and tear the net. 🙁 My only mud crab was caught in a prawn net (was prawning at the time) and ripped the net to pieces. Took it home in the mangled net, put it on the floor, the crab escaped, mum not happy with an angry mud crab scurrying about on the kitchen floor.

I am picturing you and your mum doing some funny looking dance moves across the kitchen floor 🤣.

Those Environets sure are slow in the water.

  7. That is so annoying when the conditions don't work out.   With the Blue Swimmers letting go, i have seen on a fishing show when they are close to the boat but below the surface  dropping the rod tip in the water and wrapping them in fishing line before they pet go. It might be worth a try.
