  1. a complete spare fuel line imo is a good idea....or at least a spare primer bulb as they perish in the sun quite easily and can get overlooked in a service...a good rip chord for the outboard definitely.... spare battery terminals are handy in tool box as well as wd 40,aero start is good stuff (esp if ur old tech motor)a length of normal electrical wire can save the day.... (my bits and pieces box is quite large as well but comes in handy every now and then)....in the car these days i have spare wheel bearings, winch handle,a jack that will do the trailer and the tools to fix all the above! the list goes on......to state the obvious a well maintained boat and trailer is the key to not ever using most of the above items.....happy boating....
  2. Yeah its open mate....they r doing half of it at a time apparently.so if u get a good weather sunday it will be chaos......council dude told me it would be all done in 3 weeks....it took 2 phone calls and a call back in 4 days to get an answer....just another efficient government department!
  3. Personally i just use a paternoster with 2 droppers using 3/0 hooks and obviously sinker at bottom big enough to hold bottom all the time and not having to "chase " the bottom all the time is best...sometimes this cant be done due to the current....sometimes (like last monday for eg.) you cant get enough drift going to cover ground and find the fish....(we only manged a couple) just drift round and if we hit a patch mark it on gps and go back and fish it each time...we just use "normal" baits obviously the fresher the better if not qaulity prawns or ultimately if ur gunna target them get the best white bait u can find and this will usually outfish prawns and pillies if u can get it to stay on your hook....having said that the biggest offshore flattie i have caught was on a live yakka......fresh yakka fillets obviously are the goods as well.... the best time?same as most baitfishing i suppose.....early morning or around the tide change or both if u can get it....good luck

    Sweep

Anyone else ever encountered this? If only a decent snapper could be caught for every 100 sweep stealing baits at longy....sometimes squire amongst the hordes but never actual snapper for me..... one day a plus 2 or 3 kg sepciman will come my way.......

    Boating Mishaps

I forgot a beauty...number 23.my mate motored all the way up the river and pulled up where we were anchored a few miles offshore....we were moving spots at the time and he put the boat in reverse and then anchored himself....we took off and he went to follow some time later...motor was running but boat wouldnt move.... he had lost his prop!It must have been the fact that he put it in reverse that popped the prop off but we still dont know how the nut undone itself....says a lot for split pins doesnt it!We towed him in but were struggling so a very dodgy looking old dude (i kid u not all he was wearing was a gstring looking contraption) he was in a clinker and was heading back up river so he towed him all the way while we went back out for a fish....the funniest site ever....your homophobic best mate being towed home by a queer in a clinker showing him everything he had for breakfast all the way home......priceless and he still hasnt lived it down!

    Boating Mishaps

I am bored so i thought i woulld start a thread containing all the mishaps i have heard of whilst boating for the last 20 years or so....most i have only heard of but some i have experienced first hand.....feel free to add yours if i miss any.....maybe it will make more raiders aware of the hazards when boating..... 1. Launching the boat without the bungs 2.Removing winch cable and safety chain at the top of the ramp and therefore boat landing on ramp 3.Mistaking the fuel filler cap with a rod holder and literally filling the boat up with petrol! 4.Leaving the cap off the fuel tank and having fuel splash all over the boat. 5.Not strapping the boat down and losing the boat off the trailer and on to the road 6. Not tilting the motor up and causing skeg damage against the ramp 7.Had a mate get in the car without knowing he had a rope around his leg that was still attached to the boat...he took off and got a severe rope burn 8.Losing the winch handle when launching and therefore not having it when u return (very common) use a wheel brace when u do it 9.Snapping the winch cable whilst winching boat 10.Slipping on the ramp and ending up in the drink with wallet and phone 11.Breaking down on the ramp. 12.Hand brake failing on the ramp and the car ends up in the drink. 13.getting water in the fuel and not having a separator 14.Not opening the breather on portable fuel tanks 15.Not carrying an anchor.breaking down and ending up on the rocks 16.Running the boat aground at low tide 17.Forgetting:the bait, the tackle box,the lures, your best mate, the key to the ignition. 18.Running out of fuel cos ur too keen chasing fish 19.Not removing the trailer lights b4 launching 20. Not unlocking the outboard and having to pull it out and do it on the ramp 21.Anchoring for an overnighter, going to sleep and having the wind change which swings u round and puts you on the rocks. Thinking about it i reckon i have done about 14 of the 21!...but thats boating for you.anyone else got any classics?
  8. Thought i would try beat the wind and rain and get a fish in yesterday arvo....couldnt raise a yakka at balmoral after half hour of solid burleying so gave up and although it was looking a bit rough i punched in to the swell for a few miles and did a few drifts....got 1 50cm flattie which i am about to eat but struggled to hold bottom to get anymore....long story short i anchored up and caught undersized squire 1 after the other for a good half hour...must have caught 1 every drop for about 10 drops all around the old legal mark being 28cm....i then hooked something more solid which i was hoping was a jewy as it was fighting a bit weird... turned out to be a double hook up of 30cm trev and 40cm mowie..fighting against each other and me! After that all fish went off the bite and the sun went down....wanted to hang round and try for a jew but having no livies on me i decided the pub was a better option....Wondering if anyone else saw the amount of birds out there yesterday arvo..i have never seen so many....it was an amazing sight as they covered the whole horizon and were often smashing in to the surface but always seemed to come up empty handed....couldnt see any surface action either so i was wondering what they were chasing?and also what type of birds they are?most of them were smallish black birds with a white front...never really noticed them b4 but it made for an enjoyable arvo....home and boat washed by 830.....pub by nine hope the weather clears up for a fish monday....we need the rain but its a long weekend goddammit!

    Tunks

Hey guys....pls can anyone tell me is tunks park ramp open for the long weekend? Gunna go fish the hi b4 the wind picks up and need a ramp!
  10. Can anyone tell me if tunks is fully operational by now? LAst time it was 1 lane only and they said closing for 2 weeks? Anyone know if they got it finished for the long weekend?
  11. Make sure the breather on the fuel tank is open and not blocked as well.....a common and simple mistake that can cause what your describing....
  12. $250!!!!! Jees i was expecting less than $100.... They must have been in a bad mood.....
  13. Was the inline fuse blown or did u just replace it anyway?Did you have any other issues while wiring up the boat like blowing fuses or anything like that as i am wondering if u have somehow sent a spike up the line and damaged both units ....if not sounds like you have been unlucky...obviously if there is power going to the units and they dont power up take them back.... dont bother calling an auto elec.....swap the 27 meg first as that is a simple red and black only..turn it on and see if it powers up but dont hit the transmit! How big is ur boat?
  14. mate what colour wires had power on them...for the 2 way it should be red positive, black negative..... for the cd again it should be red positive and black negative but there is usually another wire that has to go to positive as well....it should show that on wiring diagram.....if you have power on these then make sure there are no fuses on the back of the unit although these days they are usually the inline type anyway..... also just a word of warning when you get your 27 meg working do not press the transmit button without the aerial connected...this can and will blow the output amplifier of the unit and render it useless....they dont cover this under warranty.......good luck
  15. Pretty sure my mate did a bow line and we did a locked blood knot and that slipped through as well... maybe the spectre was wet and it was slipping on the shiny staino hook? Just put tension on it while on the trailer and see what happens...
  16. I had my spectre cable fail at the place where it attaches to the hook so i had to tie a knot to get it to work......we tied probably 5 or 6 knots before we got one that would work.... the spectre kept slipping no matter what we did....its holding as it is but let me know if u find a tried and tested knot that works as i often look at the one i did and wonder if it is going to slip again....i wrapped the spectre around the hook a few times then did a clove hitch and then a few overhand knots to lock it in....its working so far but there must be a better way.....
  17. INteresting about the open waters bit.....i am tipping they could have a field day any weekend if they wanted to....suday morning there was a 12 foot tinnie and many other small boats sitting outside the heads.... its doubtful they had even half of that gear.....i am clear on it all except for the fire bucket? Never heard of it and never been asked for it? Anyone know whats in it.....$30 odd bucks at boating shop. Bad luck on the fine too as i have been fishing off sydney for 20 years and never ever been pulled over whilst outside... how much was the fine guuna be?
  18. Mate do they lift the boat off the trailer for that sort of money or just remove rollers etc and spray as best they can?

    Boat Trailers

Thanks for that tuffy....i actually bought one of those but wasnt convinced it was going to work and i cant quite remember why but it was going to be difficult to mount with the set up on my trailer.... interesting you swear by yours so if i have any more probs i will reconsider getting one....
  20. 1 or 2 wire rope clamps of the correct size will do it..... a few bucks each at boating shop..
  21. How about a gold coin donation set up at problem fishing spots....proceeds go to divers and not councils...... any decent fisho would donate.....the problem minority would not and thats the whole problem......
  22. Hey all....went for an overnighter last night.....first headed to ramp at wharf rd ermo to find it completely shut and under construction Didnt see that one coming! Dunno if it was advertised or what.... was gunna go putney but headed to tunks to find it being worked on as well....down to 1 or a tight 2 lanes... question is when does wharf rd reopen and tunks is gunna be shut for 2 weeks as well....i think starting this week maybe? As for the fishing i still cant crack the whole squidding duck i am having and the current offshore last night was a shocker so it was too hard to fish that as well....came in and fished and slept in quarintine bay for some small trevs only....headed back out with livies first thing to find the lj's worse than ever...so for all that i only ended up with a couple of just legal reddies and 1/2 dozen jackets.....just my bitch for the day but if i was gunna close a boat ramp i reckon i would do it in winter rather than the start of the peak season!! I will go down and have a look at wharf rd thru the week but anyone know whats going on down there?
