    Water In Fuel

HI raiders.... with all the talk about fuel and water in recent threads i thought i would add that i was always told that if i suspected i had water in my fuel to add metho to the tank which soaks up the water? Can anyone confirm or deny this? Remember draining water from carbies in a southerly inside the banks many years ago.....not much fun at all but we got home......
  3. Hi raiders.... thinking of doing an overnighter on sat night the 25th although it looks like it might blow up i was thinking of tucking in around quarantine bay somewhere if that ends up out of the wind. Anyone else considering fishing the 830pm/330am tide changes? If conditions dont turn out to bad ill be fishing livies somewhere there so call fishraider payatz as a call sign on the 27meg so i know theres other raiders out there. I'll be flying solo in an old 21 foot cruisecraft half cab 150 yammie four stoke... Good luck and tight lines

    Which Sounder?

Thanks for the feedback guys its much appreciated but just so my thick head understands how it all works if i am trolling in 500m of water and my sounder is not powerful enough to sound 500m will i still get a good reading of bait etc in say 100 or 200m or does the sounder need to bounce off the bottom and pick up everything in between if you get what i mean?? Wouldnt you love it if the didnt know about kevin cash so you could triple the budget and get something real decent!

    Which Sounder?

Hey raiders....sorry to revisit an old subject but im looking for a new sounder and would really like a combo unit but cant really afford to go too far over 1k.... we do a fair bit of bottom fishing off sydney but have been trolling out wide a lot this season and have lacked a good sounder for finding bait etc so do you think i would be better off with a better quality sounder and forget about the combo unit or should i go for the combo and end up with a lesser quality sounder if you know what i mean? Can get a 5 inch combo unit for around 1k but dont want to spend the coin and be real disappointed in deeper water? Also has anyone got a lowrance hds 5 unit and if so how does it perform? Or any other combo units? Thanks in advance for any feedback much appreciated!...
  6. Thanks for the reply and we have caught marlin and yft before (1st one in this boat at pt stephens the other week) but mates on board fished the comps for a few years and caught many marlin.... yeah we didnt hang around browns much but trolled both tide changes (830am and 230pm) for no results again.... dont get me wrong because in beautiful conditions and with good mates and plenty of dolphns and stuff we have a great day on the blue water but it would top it off to have a few more strikes to keep us interested....seen a good hookup take place last week in closer towards the bb fad so that was promising.... interesting to see if anyone else had any luck as i think all in all its been a slow season for the marlin... but i did hear of some yft being caught wide of browns last week? unsure if thats true...did anyone else hear this?....thanks for any input.....paul
  7. HI raiders....just wondering if anyone caught any gamefish on good friday as we trolled to browns and beyond for just one stripey (tuna). Tried at least 20 different lures of all shapes and sizes as well as skip baiting the stripey so im wondering if we are doing something wrong or is there just nothing around? We had 26 degree water about 5 nm wide of browns and still couldnt turn a reel.... we r lacking a good sounder at the moment (im in the market for one) so this isnt helping our cause but in two trips weve covered nearly 200nm for not much at all! Anyone else had any results? Also did anyone else have 26 degree water yesterday as i am unsure if sounder reading is accurate.....and another question i have is if its a midday tide change at fort denison what would the tide change be at browns? Much difference? Cheers for any help and bring on the yft!
  8. Hey raiders....i have been thinking of purchasing a vhf radio as well and thanks to you guys i now know i need a licence to operate it!.... i have always had 27 meg and have started going out wide more often in search of marlin etc so i was wondering do more people communicate with there 27 meg or vhf when fishing wide? Ive been assuming vhf as it is more powerful? Sorry for 100 questions but does vhf and 27 meg require a "base station" type thing or can 2 boats communicate betwween each other even if 500 miles out to sea? And yes i will be doing the course as well...the online version sounds good to me...cheers for any help....Paul

    Gps

i got a garmin gps 72 (hand held) off an ebay store in melbourne... no dramas and it works well...had to buy mounting bracket separately which was a bit of a rip off but it is easy to use and gets you where you need to go! Be sure to use quality batteries as they chew the cheap ones quickly.... i bought a cigarette lighter power adaptor to avoid battery issues...all good
  11. I suggest a single hook paternoster rig with appropriately sized live bait hook through its back towards the head being careful not to put hook through lateral line of fish (i think this kills it real quick) sinker on bottom and hook a few metres off depending on water depth.
  12. Take some snorkelling gear as to the left side of little beach there is an awesome spot where everyone snorkels....there are hundreds of bream there up to the 2kg mark....awesome sight they will take bread from your fingers in 3 feet of water....definitely worth a look....cant remember what the point is called but anyone in town will be able to tell you....
  13. winch and tears from sound of glass on tar! ouch
  14. mate ive been dreading hearing about the jackets coming back.... we will all end up with lead poisoning from bbqing lead! Can i ask what depth u were fishing in?
  15. Hi... jewgaffer has forgotten more than i know about fishing but as far as the close in offshore reefs used to go in the mid to late 90"s we used to find that the biggest kingfish were always caught smack in the middle of winter (10kg plus)This was in the days of kingfish traps! What a difference 10 or so years later!. Obviously trevally and i think samson fish were way more abundant in cooler months (will have to look up old fishing club pointscores to confirm samsons).... these days and back then the leather jackets become a big problem when bottom bouncing in cooler months....from some reports there here already.....bugger!
  16. Well after many hours of trolling this season we finally caught our first marlin for the boat.... After trolling wide of pt stephens on wednesday for zeros we headed out on thursday not feeling to confident but after seeing something other than a dolphin we set the poles and and the first lure hit the water about 7 mile out... whilst setting the second lure and starting to tie the rubber band off it snaps in mates hand and to our shock we are on to what turned out to about a 60kg striped marlin cught and released in 25 minutes.... awesome way to christen boat but another 6 hours of trolling saw no strikes... then went saturday and followed massive current lines teeming with baitfish for zeros again.... awesome weather all week made for a great week of and Sorry no pics cos it looks like i have last phone somewhere between pub, beach and bed!
  17. Hi raiders.....I have a 150 4 stroke yamaha o4 mod. and am just wondering if anyone knows how the trip meter on the gauges works? reason i want to know is that i want to run a separate analogue fuel gauge as the digital fuel gauge is not functioning correctly...my old analogue one used to work fine...we did a big day on sat.(the first time we have taken motor out) and trip meter showed 83 miles at the end of the day which coincided with gps reading.... so how does that work and if i disconnect fuel sender will it affect any other readings on gauges? i am guessing it might work off the speedo reading?Gotta be happy with 83 nm on about 95 litres! Its a long way from the old 2 stroke crossflow! Anyone got any ideas?
  18. yep shi# load of yachts and choppy inshore and offshore....dont know what it was but there were even small skiffs racing off south head..... a good day to be out anyway.. and
  19. mate i know what you mean...we went from meadowbank to 12 mile reef and then back to meadowbank and then to balmoral for yakkas and then back outside to try for kings on evening high tide....only to find leather jackets.....not happy! went drifting for flathead and got a couple of keepers.... sad story but tested new motor and all is good..... thats fishing for you
  20. Cheers for that...i cant highlight results tab yet so it must be too early?
  21. Hi all..... just wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a site i can go to that has the results of this years interclub tourny? We are heading up there in a couple of weeks so am interested to see how it all went?
  22. Hi all.... Can anyone tell me the average hours you would expect to get out of a v6 4 stroke outboard.... i was told around 3 to 4 thousand so when you start to get up around this mark what would you expect to happen? Just wondering..... Full rebuild possible or is this not viable or too expensive and not worth it?
  23. I have seen that happen 3 times in the last 10 years..... always with near new boats/boaties..... shattering trying to skull drag a new boat like that up the concrete.....the last thing on the trailer that we ever touch while launching is always the winch!
  24. Blue morwong... fish markets often call it "deep sea bream"..... when cooking you have to make sure you scrape the black stuff from the gut lining as i think this gives it that taste your talking about.... this should really be your minimum catch when reef fishing offshore..... Quote my brother "its a bad day when we cant even catch a mowie"..........
  25. Hi Raiders.... i have a 175hp crossflow evinrude which really chews the juice...it is on a 6 metre halfcabin which we use for offshore fishing etc... we trolled out past 12 mile last week and used about 160 litres of fuel ....we did a total of 48nautical miles mostly at trolling speed...does this sound excessive to anyone? We troll at around 8 knots which is about 2000rpm...at wot the boat does about 80 kms /hour...The prop is a 19 pitch so my question is can i change prop pitch to reduce rpm at trolling speed or does 2000rpm at 8 knots sound about right? I am not worried if i have to sacrifice top end speed to achieve better fuel economy.... cant wait to save up for an etec! any help muchly appreciated.Thanks...Paul
