  1. hi CaineS, i'm not sure whether or not you are seeking to buy a barometer. if you are, go into google u.s. and do a search on moore clocks. they carry canadian made trintec barometers and tide clocks and take it from me the looks and the quality of these instruments is really awesome and being from the u.s. they are excellent value. they don't have the usual cigar smoking importers and distributors in white suits and panama hats over there i replaced my old set with the trintec marine model. the set cost me $80 u.s. and $30 u.s for express airmail these are sealed units made for harsh marine conditions. they can be permanantly mounted out in the open on any boat and no need to mount them inside a cabin which is a must for brass barometers. the barometer has a red manually adjustable hand which can be aligned with the pressure indicator hand and as the pressure fluctuates the red hand remains fixed to allow you to see the exact degree of fluctuation as the pressure actually fluctuates. that is what it you you need to see to work any barometer properly and then record your results over time, and by elimination ascertain the prime times to go fishing. then bingo that's one factor you can truly rely on. the tide clock is also excellent and very classy you'll never need a tide chart again. the trintec tide clock gives you a time clock a well. so if you take an impatient doubter with you, you simply turn the hand backwards and set the time clock 3 hours slow. all you have to do is set it once only and at the exact time of high tide on a full moon or a new moon . but to check the accuracy with certain new moons simply check and ajust minimally if applicable at the exact time of high tide on the very day of the next Xnew moonX cripes that's a no brainer i just edited it to next !! FULL MOON !! hope this helps cheers jewgaffer fish on struth it's 5.30 am fished all night at captain cook with taren point julius and fisherraider thereddragon ( nice little haines hunter that one and a good boatie too) and we..............wow and we............................................................ and we ran out of livies
  2. good question jdu174 and i hope readers will give you their opinions the zich on sunday and on the state of the lower reaches. my opinion is :- number 1 there is still not enough good water up there number 2 the southerly influence has lasted too long number 3 the fish that have come back from the salt are still active in the mid and mouth number 4 that action was still only mediocre because the southerly influence continued number 5 it will fire everywhere tonight close enough to the mouth during in this brief switch to northerly number 6 it will be zilch by tomorrow when another big southerly front hits front number 7 stewy swordfisherman phoned me this morning for a chat on good day had by all on yesterday's billfisher trip. stew told me the waves will be 6metere high when this new southerly hits number 8 they must binge feed tonight boys as the restaurant will be closed at least for a week hope this cheers everybody up jewgaffer fish on
  3. all the best mate ouch and little fella don't worry too much. i'm looking at your member photo and it will heal by the time you're a youth jewgaffer fish on
  4. i tell you what why don't you give it a go getting used to using it left handed. quite a few pros go lefty preferring to have their right hand do the hard work. you could consider the benefits of persevering with that before you replace that handy size stella and lose money like that. darned ebay sellers remaining SOoooooo silent !! they know they would not get anywhere near the money for lefty reels and many reels that are convertible are set up left handed in the factory probably for speed of assembly or something stupid like that. some sellers sure know how to catch you don't worry about that. they can source lefties so cheaply knowing they'll get right hander money for them with the little buyer too scared to leave negative feedback for them because they'll leave them a bigger one back and it's 3 strikes and you're out while they are commission agents with the numbers in their favour. don't be too sad mate give it a go as a lefty you could be very pleased with that. good luck. jewgaffer fish on
  5. what a bullseye for a snapper ! hey stewy did you guide him to the bundeena ferry route where you and jimmy bowers used to get the ferry driver to drop your 1/2 kilo baits down when youse were fishing in game gear off bundeena wharf in the 80's? jimmy told me youse were both definately there waiting for every ferry not just the last one. he mentioned dean too and the other times and the current checking off every coastal rock, struth and said something about having to wait for a frozen ball to finish churning the water into white a boy named sue i thought he said or was that johnny cash had a call from ballina jimmy said to grab you and come up now wow jewgaffer fish on
  6. hi varos 1, i have early model penn ss spinning reels like the original 650 ss to 950 ss models which came out years prior to the later 6500ss models to 9500ss respectively and i use some of those also. the original 650 ss - 950 ss models came with a separate adaptor shaft and having it and not losing it was the only way you could convert over from a left hander pre-set position to right handed if you wished to use it opposite handed. my feeling that anti-reverse may have been used in reel production for so long is because it was originally designed that way to cater for english or european brook fishermen using a certain old fashioned snare type technique. perhaps more modern reel manufacturers may have found it more economical to leave the original anti reserve concept intact. so it could add up that reels which have no anti reverse need to be changed to a more expensive design to elimate anti reverse configurations and then prevent strain on new mechanisns by using heavier components. i have seen a few fish lost by over excited boggle eyed novices and gun fishos alike accidentally hitting the anti reverse on and off lever instead of the drag ratchet lever. because of having an anti-reverse feature or even having reverse in the first place, i've seen good fishos spending valuable fishing time pulling reels apart to get line out of the guts of them because of the fact that most modern reels are still made based on the now almost ancient, anti-reverse principles. any one on this topic benefit from using reverse? and am i missing out on something "reel good" ? jewgaffer fish on
  7. sure can because of another shutdown they have now relocated to next door to the bowling alley where james gets most of his baitballs. jewgaffer fish on
  8. i would agree with zrep and the others and you don't know how it's going to handle and being an 18' and fibreglass it might need a larger hp motor so there's around $15000 for say a 150hp installed. and as it's bowrider style it may only have room for a couple of people to fish if you want it particularly for roomy fishing. it looks as though it may have a cabin area but not many passengers like to sit inside cabins travelling along or at rest on the water in the day time. they are ok for a couple spending nights on the water. if you want it for deep see there won't be much to go on and previous buyers might be elated but not really able to elaborate on what is required in a boat if used in choppy open sea conditions if i was considering all this i would be looking at a well proven aussie made centre console or a short bowed open runabout and some of them are quite at home with 50 and 60hp which gives you less maintenance costs in the long term if anything goes wrong with the motor. you can also add a bimini with storm covers for weather protection and use a couple of sleeping bags for occasional nights when you want to sleep on the water but it all depends on what your looking for in a boat before price style and finish on finish even comes into it there is no reserve it seems except for the starting bid so the seller has had to import these boats pay customs and gst and quality of manufacture and inner strength seems to be an unknown factor with some no name imports. jewgaffer fish on
  9. hi thanks flightmanager i'm sure this info will certainly fix this computer glitch for want of a better word i asked swordfisherman to send some ballina photos up to jewhunter which i hope will establish an excellent ballina connection with stew's old fishing friend etc of many years and my long standing mate, jimmy bowers who stewy says is one of the most naturally talented fisherman in australia that combo would catch some pretty fair fish what do you reckon stewy? i would also like to thank all the other members who took the time to help out flightmanager i think this particular link to microsoft you sent will help lots of others as well i received a reply from browney1 which simply states send them to me "trust me i'm young i'll have them up before you know it" and i think that says it all with my generation of fishos and computers. regards jewgaffer fish on
  10. the first one should go in a few mins thanks swordfisherman think there'll be 8 i can send but in a group for some and sep for others, want to get photos taken at ballina for jewhunter grant at the tweed as he says he has not had time as yet to get right into it again. can you forward on to him as well as back to me, anyway? cheers jewgaffer fish on
  11. hi thanks again for coming to the rescue again inhlanzi i'll email them to you tomorrow if that's ok? do i have to scan them one at a time to email them or try to group a few together in the scanner if they fit under the lid ok.? i would like to thank all the other members who were kind enough to reply tonight but shirl and i couldn't follow along too well and zrep thanks heaps paul but when i entered that address it said can't deliver mail service administration problem or something after about 20 mins or so. when i highlighted each photo and hit the edit button this microft xp version does not have a button to take me to either the words image or stretch or skew either. just says cut and paste and i don't know what that is yet and a few other irrelevant words and google help is no help at all only thousands of help buttons to read so i still don't know what i am going to do with my boats either but stew swordfisherman is going to call in and snap those and wildfish from st andrews is that luke? stew said you could probably be a deckie for me and my grandson for the recent hairtail social and i had plans for other than those buck teeth freaks but i think their still mainly soapies just yet so we'll wait till this misery settles mate and cripes it'll fire . i am in c/town area too when im not away fishing ballina with tmy busted back and an operation and all but walking ok so it needs time. thanks heaps every body for now. and i reckon i still need a bit of help with slow easy steps so i can be a bit more independent with photo resizing in the future. anyone ever had the time to read microsoft help pages , struth best regards to all and i hope i don't miss anyone in my giving thanks and appreciation as the email bell keeps going off all the time as i write jewgaffer fish on
  12. hi everyone. can anywhone help me resize about 10 fish photos ? as not one will go thru for me i can email them over (just) and my wife shirley is not much good on a computer either. in return i'll pinpoint a safe and easy land based spot on the hawkes for fairly regular jewie hook ups . cheers. and as we're not much good at understanding link instruction, it would helpful if someone could just post in easy plain english steps how shirl and i can resize photos of fish and our boats it's a whole new ball game out there in computers. we've spent too much time doing better things like fresh air and fishing i suppose. thanks jewgaffer fish on
  13. reel addiction you're quite right about feeling something strange could be lurking around in close in this particularly odd winter from qld to vic and the late currents that didn't happen last year still hanging around and i'm not talking jews on that gear no way but not entirely dismissing sharks but.... mmmm reel addiction your own hunch if you have one would be interesting and probably you're 100% right interesting post. jewgaffer fish on ps i was tempted to pm thereddraggon to see if he wanted to night fish his or my boat in the georges instead of am and that may have proved good timing for jews.
  14. ungry warnie your question is a good one, a little outside me giving you a confident answer though. i do know it well and truly applies at certain times take away whalers like bull sharks in "close in reefs" and jewies are natural to most "close in reefs" and in only selective ocean reefs where they shed their eggs but my knowledge stops right there. jewies are far from removed from being the same boss in the ocean due to the number of predator sharks and of course the grabbers and chokers the occies. perhaps offshore bottom bashers could tell us more about this although the dominance of sharks in the ocean and my mention of occies will raise many eyebrows in reply and a new topic called "specifically targetting small occies for jewie bait" will arise and i'm gunna love that one as well. thanks and cheers jewgaffer fish on
  15. strike me lucky jewhunter. what a great backdrop you have up there . what a great move for a city fisho to the tweed, oh, go the c/nets! - having gc and ballina just a "cast and stroll along away" from home. and struth wait till mangrove jack has Christmas dinner anywhere near your backyard wow Lord save the whiting not only they'll have you to contend with they'll have you and jack on their tail too and jack won't have much of chance to enjoy Christmas dinner either, i tell you. tweed any absolutely great place you've got it all Grant, yep got it all and then some and you'll be overflowing with heaps of bass everywhere and heaps of other company for your pet too. Murwillimbah wow i woudn't chose better would be heaven on a budget for me. the other's all been appreciated and highly valued mate will contact soon and and no doubt i'll get you together with the gaffers at ballina and jay the hat from kingscliffe. when shirl and i holidayed as we do about 3 or 4 times a year with jay the hat and the fishing park boys at ballina with my broken back in july o6 jimmy won second biggest whiting at evans/ballina classics and jay got second biggest cobe. jay's go a jack spot up your way and will even only take me and jimmy along blindfold. strike me lucky i'm excited but my one finger typing thumb just won't go any more and this old salt has just run out of coffee. wow the tweed you really do have it all mate. with kind regards jewgaffer fish on
  16. QUOTE "While we'd like to believe the ship and their crews comply* with the various regulations and the requirements but we wonder about compliance*," Mr Goal said. (gaol?) (emphasis in red added)* that statement from mr. goal does make a lot of sense deserves a promotion for every other soy drunk aboard jewgaffer fish on and vote informal
  17. glad you added hairtail that makes me feel a bit better and maybe that could mean there'll be one jewie left for me. cheers jewgaffer fish on

  20. they've got me beat billfisher. your participation is most valuable. i can't understand why they are cutting off safe access by establishing no go areas in prime recreational spots now called marine parks and ruining coastal caravan park type businesses such as they have done in lennox as only one example and in the many local tackle shops eand other businesses almost totally reliant on income from local plus passing and holiday trade. WHEN on the other hand they are providing f.a.d for devices for "fishing out of harm's way" (!! ?) jewgaffer i can't sign off by saying fish on this time when it's really fish off.
  21. It can certainly be frustrating for the novice jewfisherman. But keep putting in the time and you will be rewarded at least to some degree. Jewies over the 15kg to 25kg are few and far between . All of my jewie fishing is done off the rocks so i usually take 2 outfits,1 for bream and tailor and other for jewies .I start for bream and if the bite goes off in a hurry usually it means something a whole lot bigger is roaming the area so i switch and it pays off. (a reply i connected to by frantic in another topic) i feel i should make this a new topic for the benefit other members and i wish to add the following in my post :- {"if the bite goes off in a hurry... something a whole lot bigger is roaming the area"} i believe the following is really good advice for fishos who target predator fish in estuaries and i believe it is a vital ingredient of the riddle when targetting fish such as jewies. instead of packing up their gear "when the bite goes off" for what they are hoping to catch in general, fishos should think in accordance with what's natural and most likely to happen in accordance with the pecking order along the food chain for the very survival of a different species. fishos should take time out to run a big livie or a big squid around as there is likely to be a reasonably quick change to an otherwise dissappointing day. not many fishos would ever consider that a natural change occurs to the pecking order in regards to fish and they often call it a day if everything else suddeny goes dead quiet in a hurry and overlook a probable burst of predator activity at that particular location. it is then up to the fisho to quickly burley bomb the bottom with parts of the same livies or big squid they are throwing at the predators to hold them there and catch good numbers of them instead of maybe just one. i believe, instead of upping the ante fishos continue to use the wrong bait and wonder why when fish have dissapppeared the only hook ups they get after a further lengthy period are the expected freeks that come out of cracks and crevices to take those same wrong baits. i would like to tell you from all my experience in targetting jewies my very best results have occurred using the big squid and big livie method and burleying more bow and stern bottom bombs of pieces of the same baits i'm using immediately after the peckers dissappear, rather than continuing to burley in the same manner when i elected to hold smaller fish and baitfish in one spot and using that methof at that time to attract jewies into participating. so rather than wait on and continue in that same wrong manner on the day myself, being somewhat dependant by relying on previous results in the same conditions, i immediately "switch" and i up the ante and i haven't moved to another location and here come the jewies but i suppose i should use the words "at times here comes the jewies" so you won't think it is inferred as being easy please air your views experiences and tactics or whether you'd move to another location or whether you would have mostly just called it a day. i would love to hear from red and jewhunter up on the tweed on changing tactics and staying on or changing locations which i would do on the richmond or put the wire on at the richmond gap for bull sharks with beer batter,....like they might consider doing up there ay jewhunter >? regards jewgaffer fish on
  22. hey there young james those pink fairy floss hats in the photos look pretty scrumptious. jewgaffer fish on
  23. hi warnie great topic and well presented i once hooked up something following a floating custard bottle. i thought it was rather unusual when the custard bottle came along too i quickly discovered it was tied to the custard bottle with a well seasoned leader and had a couple of old gang hooks in it too. that ray must have had a terrific time going back and forth with the tides so i now make sure i take a litre of custard along to treat the hawks eels to a drink of banana custard too. what a terrific site this is for everyone and for fishos like myself who are well and truly land locked by this constant indoors only weather jewgaffer fish on
  24. i've noticed how many people leave negative feedback for sellers after swooping on 99 cent fishing items on ebay with wonderful descriptions and photos. it's amazing how many buyers expect to receive $99.00 quality fishing rods reels and dozens of other fishing items fand only pay 99cents for them. some sellers are a wake up and sell a fall apart $40.00 reel with a postage fee of $58.00 in a spot that buyers would hardly notice they leave negative feedback for sellers who then leave retalliatory feedback for them nearly everytime, even tho the buyers have paid the 99cents and simply received the goods. what a shammozzle. no wonder why buyers congratulate sellers with highly complimentary feedback on chuck out fishing items the system must have em beat and too scared to say otherwize. in ebay feedback it seems to be 3 strikes and your out or for some it seems ulcers would develop and their whole lives would be ruined forever by just one negative feedback. power sellers don't seem to care one iota about a negative against them as when they reach a thousand or so theirsales shannigans continue in full knowledge that they will lose only about .001%from a feedback percentage around a constant 99% or so. if i ever get trapped on ebay i am simply goping to leave a big red negative for them with only one word, AMBIGUOUS and as i have paid they will use up all their time on asking me why in the space provided. i am certain that they will not be able to retalliate at all to negative feeding just saying the word AMBIGUOUS and i am sure they will be tearing their hair out if everyone else says the same. any views on this fishing subject that i bought up for a change. jewgaffer fish on
  25. hi reely, do you know if there is any chance of those black and white photos of 100 - 130lb jewies were of fish that were actually caught at spencer? used to jewie with my older son greg at ma hanna's at spencer and we'd stay in the old boat shed she used to let for five bucks a head. lot's of kiwis backpackers stayed their for some reason. could be the price and reports of the size of the fish having spread to new zealand. ma hanna was near 80 then and had many a yarn to tell about huge jewies being caught at spencer she had black and white pictures of old man hanna with monsters bigger than him proudly displayed in the old boat shed. big animals from spencer often hit the newspapers and won reels and new caps and all sorts of things. it may not be the same at spencer anymore but must go up there again some day thanks jewgaffer fish on
