  1. Most went back to live and fight another day-hopefully next week.

    Rick

    P.S. Hey Daniel,

I think you're being generous about the supposed "10 lb" Flathead those guys reckon they caught. We saw it too when we were leaving, I reckon lucky to be 3-4 lb at best.

I'm a metric boy! Either way no where near 10lb, and their 'hand demonstration' measurement was off by about an arms length.

PS. It was probably 10lb in scale next to that "legal" snapper..

Haha I still should gain the tag "swimmer boy" as you definetley needed mine! And net boy should be changed to 'net king' as they were swimming into my net to save themselves the embarrassment. Admit it, they're scared s#!tless of my ability hahaha!

  2. After sorting out the drag washer stacks did it fix up the issue?

When I pull apart a reel I usually do it over a box or a lipped tray so if I do acidentally drop something it can't go rolling off the table, and any part with springs I put an old money bag over it before pulling it off so it doesn't fly elsewhere.

An old divided tackle box is great for pulling apart reels as you can place parts in step by step, and as slinky has told me photos are also a great reference tool.

  3. Have been waiting for your post today! How was the bite after I packed up? That debris came in thick and spoiled the bit. Was a shame I wasn't there for the start of the hot bite, who knows what the bag could have tallied!(probably not much higher knowing my luck!) A mate of mine filleted the fish I kept for a free reel service so my hands were clean. Rick certainly knows the ropes to the art, and that spot just shows how even though the first couple of attempts produce bugger all that persistence pays off. I actually thought you and steve were pulling my leg when I called to hear 21 in the bag.

    Top effort gents!

  4. Raiders,

The other day i got a bit too curious about 'what was under those screws' on the top of my cheapo Silstar. So, i undid them, saw that it just took the spool lip off, and put it back together. Now, once the drag is tightened to even looser than normal, the drag knob turns with the spool when line is pulled. This results in it getting EXTREMELY tight. Please Help!

    Thanks

I have never pulled apart a silstar before but by the sounds of things there must be something you have put in wrong to cause the drag knob to catch on the spool causing it to turn. Check to make sure the screws are countersunk in correctly to avoid them catching. Also remove the drag knob and check that the middle of the spool has no obstructions causing the centre piece of the drag knob to catch. Possibly could be a washer out of line or even a metal spring clip from the spool getting caught on the drag knob. The main shaft doesn't spin at all so there has to be something catching between the drag knob and spool. Sorry I could be more helpful, hard to paint a picture blind.

    Regards

    Daniel

  5. By the looks of that plastic it might have taken it for some nice weed floating in the current. I reckon a light lead belly jighead would also work a treat. Interesting to see if a few more hookups of drummer/blackies are possible on those plastics.

Top effort on light line! Did you get a measurement? (weight or length)

    Regards

  6. The last season I fished sydeny i was using dango wax awesomestuff used 12 or 14lb for the rocks its Tortue or Maxima make a grease using Vaseline Beeswax and a silicon based floor polish melt and mix outdoors in an old saucepan and poor into metal tins allow to set it mkes an awesome line floatant and lasta for ages on the rocks where you do not have issues with oil etc in the water like you can get in the harbour and regardless your line will sink.

Any specific mix ratio used for making the wax?

  7. i know the jm reels have the drag washers on either side of the spool and they dont jam under load like other lever drags do

    cant speak for the acurates

    cheers arman

Hey arman I was under the impression accurate only did either side, but never seen a jig master strip down so I'm probably wrong!

  8. spot on, global tackle stock the 'Dango Wax Nylon' which is a floating line orange in colour with low memory, high knot strength and high abrasion resistance that makes it ideal for luderick. i bought mine a couple of month ago and i'm very happy with it so far. the 10lb dia is 0.268mm, 12lb is 0.288mm, 18lb is 0.341mm. hope that helps

    cheers

    bertrand

Hey steve siglon fine float is the bright yellow stuff I was using the other week, floats for 1hr or so then completely useless, am stripping it off tomorrow. Rick has some nice line from global called v systems and it floated the whole Monday no issues. Only feedback he had was its knot strength wasn't the best. I will be buying some tomorrow in a heavier lb to compensate the knot strength. (14lb most probably).

  9. i have to agree with the boys in regards to the slow ratio ,its much much easier on the body

i have mainly jigged with spin but i also have a overhead avet 2speed matched to a saltiga rod

why i mention this when you switch from high to low gear the difference is unbelievable ,just so much harder on the arms

i used to like the high ration cause that's what i thought it had to be ,

i reckon the higher rations where better when we used those old glass 7ft broomsticks to jig with

i used a tsmIII for years, had to upgrade the drag though, still not enough

but my stella 8000pg is a 4.9 ratio ,no problems there at all

jigging for longer catches you more fish

the avets low gear is about 4 flat, again no drama,s there either

the jigging master reels are the pick in my eyes

the trouble with most overheads is the amount of drag they can dish out, thats why i went to a stella ,thats where the jm reels and the acurates ,excel, twin drag plates or something like that

the evet doesn't cut it in the drag department either

end of the day its your choice, and what your are comfortably with

just have a look at the jm range of reels maybe a pe5

    about 500 i think

a mate of mine caught a 60kg yft on a pe5 jm earlier this year

like i said its your choice and your money have a look and buy what your happy with what ever that is,as theirs some awesome tackle around these days

    cheers arman

Avet are starting to make a dual drag version (called raptor) of all models, but they are pricy. They already have the sx and hx model out. The downfall of the jigging master and avet dual drag reels are that both drag washers are on one side of the spool so when you crank it up it puts enormous pressure on one side of the reel and can cause unwanted twisting and tough to wind. Accurate reels have a dual drag system with a drag on either side of the spool, allowing a smooth drag even at high settings.

  10. Can anyone beat 5 years on owning a rod without catching a fish on it?

Sage SI2 9 weight rod with a Abel reel with optional arm!

    That's it!

This winter a salmon with have to do!

I bought it to take away up to cape york to chase Permit off the flats, cyclone stopped that :05: so I never had the opportunity to cast at a worthy species to blood such a nice outfit on.....

SO anyone got longer and why?

    Greg

    I can on 2 counts

1/ abu garcia 5600c - brought for my dad by my mums dad in 1986 I believe, he hated overheads and refused to use it, was given to me 14yrs later and I didn't use it til late 2001.

2/ mitchell spidermite baitcaster + mitchell spidermite 5'6 1-2kg rod. Parents got it for me for my 12th birthday after a lot of begging (a $450 setup for a 12yo...they must have been smoking some funky stuff!), birdsnested it in the backyard first cast, didn't touch it again till I was 19.

    Daniel

  11. Never really checked if the level wind is centred when I cast, and my rod is a 1-2kg 5'6 so it shouldn't be my excuse, might have to get some better braid and some practice. My reel free spools for around 30seconds so no issue with that. Was looking for a reason to get another new toy but looks like I'll just have to do some upgrades. Very nice combo you have there anyway!

  12. What sort of distance were you getting with the small lures? Obviously you were only casting the length of the pool but did it feel like it had a lot more potential? I have a tiny mitchell spidermite baitcaster with a 5'6 rod, get around 15m out of it (my casting needs some tweaking also) but think I need a new reel and longer rod as the setup I have seems to be more of a yak rod (had it since I was 12 so was perfect back then). Saw the pics you put up of this reel and it sure is damn sexy.

  13. I use my htc android based phone to access when out and about, goes striaght to the full website (reading previous comment a mobile based site was mentioned, but have never seen). Only issue I have is I can't upload photo's from my mobile but not a biggies

  14. G'day WoodchOp,

A 7/8wt will be fine. The main reason for using heavier is more so you can cast bigger flies and cope better with wind, although the power for fighting fish is another difference.

You didn't mention whether you have a floating, intermediate or sinking line. For the salt, an intermediate or sinking line would be more useful.

To start out with, just keep it really simple. For a simple salt water leader a straight length of 10kg mono is fine or taper it from 10kg down to 6kg. Keep the overall leader length to about 2 to 2 1/2m and the easiest way to connect it to your flyline is with a 'loop to loop'. You can buy a packet of braided loops specifically for the purpose. You don't need to worry about delicate presentation of ultra-light flies when chasing fish like Dollies so a carefully tapered leader isn't necessary.

Keep the flies simple too. Just get yourself a selection of Clouser Minnows (for fishing a bit deeper); some polar fibre minnows, flashy profiles or similar for shallow water, and some small poppers or even better 'Crease flies' for the surface (you might find chucking poppers hard with a 7wt unless you keep to very small sizes). Colours for all can be white, white & chartreuse, white and tan, or similar and a bit of flash helps. Sizes should be up to about 2/0 (but take some smaller ones too). You might find bigger flies harder on that gear.

    Cheers, Slinky

Cheers for the reply slinky, I am acually unsure on the line I got on it, it was already spooled and was to far under the weather to remember. Ill have to check it out but guessing its floating. Will get it changed to sinking. I've never fly fished before just wanting to get some use out of it and have some fun. Will have a look at the flies you've mentioned and see how I go knocking some up.

    Thanks again

    Daniel

  15. I have a fly rod a brought 6months ago after a cracker night at the casino (to many beers and a fish shop open at 4am!) And have decided I need to get some use out of it, and am wanting to set it up for dollies for next summer at the FADs. Its 9ft 7-8w, most places I've searched recommend a 9-10w but think it will be ok unless I hook a thumper. The questions I have what sort of leader/tippet should I run? Also is there anywhere I can get some good flies from? Planning to make my own but just want to get an idea of size/style. Any other pointers anyone can offer?

    Cheers

    Daniel

  16. A great reel mate and fantastic value for money. This is what Slinky had to say:

Yeah I spoke to him about it, was initially going to get the stx20 but his comment on the weight made me change my choice. I had other options but this was a steal. Abu are top reels I own some old school cardinals and ambassaduers and they are still doing their job, just a shame the prices didn't drop a lot when manufacturing moved to china. Can't wait to test the rod and reel out (still haven't cristened the rod!)

  17. Been looking into a reel for my lox 1-3kg rod, have been looking around at a fair few reels, yesterday was in a tackle shop in my area and they had 50% off all their stock. Hiding down the bottom I noticed an abu soron stx10, and for $130 I could not resist! The reel is a little bit heavier then other brands in its class, but for that price with all the features I could not resist! Will strip it down over the next couple of days and suss it all out, one thing I noticed is its a 11 bearing reel, but only 8 on the exploded map of it, so guessing 3 are in the handle!

  18. I recently brought myself a martini filleting knife and am very impressed. Cuts through flesh like butter (one finger found out the hard way). Depending on size and handle between $50 - $100 but well worth the investment. Have filleted blackies, flathead and whiting just to name a few with it and there is very minimal wasted flesh, and does not hack at it. Owned a rapala one that set me back $50 and was one of the worst decisions I made, after 3 fish the blade was blunt and starting to chip. I also own a large vitorinox knife which I use to gut and slice through the backbone when needed.

  19. Hello everyone,

As the topic says I'm looking to get a key for the handle nuts for penn/shimano reels. I don't own any but service a few and have lost the one I own, and the tackle shops I've been to don't have spares and can't be bothered ordering one in for me (one store has had one on order for me for over a month). I'm happy to pay for it if anyone has one.

    Cheers

    Daniel

  20. Yeah I stopped fishing because I felt bad arriving 1 1/2hrs late and scoring the first fish. :P tell you what number 20 was the hardest fish to hook of the day! Is the blackie challenge still on for next Sunday?

  21. I have been playing around with nori (dried seaweed used for sushi) for a while, have only caught one using it, used it as burley 2 fridays ago, burleyed hard while I rigged up, as soon as a bait hit the water I was getting downs but am unsure if the bite was already hot or if it was the burley. Got the idea because I use to use it to feed my tangs in my aquarium. Am going to keep playing with it and hopefully I will have some better findings.

Rick has also told me parsley does the trick ;)
