  1. One thing to keep in mind when purchasing a combo is whether or not it comes with australian maps. The reason why I say this is because maps alone can cost a further $250+ depending. So that would be another cost to factor in when comparing units.
  2. Thanks for the detailed reply guys! I will get the gearbox oil checked out.
  3. By all means I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure the turn of the tide is when the tide changes(run out/run in & vice versa). So around the 6 & 12 mark or whenever the high and low is when the tide slows then stops and changes(turn of the tide).
  4. Hey Raiders, About 5 trips ago I remember getting some line caught in my propeller in which I pulled until it came out. But after my last trip I saw some line still stuck in the propeller so I decided I would take it apart and clear it of any remaining line. I just took the propeller off and to my suprise saw a sh*tload of line stuck in there. There must have been 20m+ of braid caught there, probably even more than that. I have now cleared it of any line and also noticed a bit of a burning smell not overly strong but if took a breath I noticed a slight burning smell. Now I have heard that tangled line can cause gearbox problems is there anything I can do to check? Is the burning smell just normal exhaust residue or should I be worried? And lastly I tightened the propellar back on quite tight is this normal procedure or should I loosed it a little? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hey mate, I had NGK plugs in my motor as well which was causing the false signal. I had a marine mechanic look at it and he didn't understand what was causing it and narrowed it down to a faulty gauge or wiring issue which if you think about it is quite logical. But I'm glad I read the infamous article by Bill Grannis which stated that "Incorrect spark plugs occasionally cause false warning signals, too." And after changing the plugs this sorted out my problem and was a huge relief. So it may be worth a shot fitting the factory specified plugs because as Huey said they're only $6. But I made the mistake of not going down to see Huey before and I don't think I will do it again so if you find out that it's not a simple fix I would definately book in with Huey. This is a video of the false signal that I got see if it's the same as yours. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=9jL1ChBNVaQ
  6. Hi, I had a similar problem when I purchased my boat (2000 50hp johnson) and it turned out to be the plugs. So if all else fails maybe worth a shot checking to see that you have the factory specificed plugs(Champion QL78YC for me). Anyways I wish you all the best.
  7. Wow that really does sound like the best job in the world and pays well too!
  8. [ Personally I would use a single hook rig either snelled or whatever knot you please as long as your confident with it (I use a snell). Just put a 4/0 -8/0 through the yakkas back or nose if there's current and you shouldn't have a problem with hook up rates. Hence not having to use a double hook rig. If the kings are a little shy try using fluoro carbon or alternativelty drop down size or both. And in regard to the kings not hitting livies I guess some days they prefer certain baits over others it's all about matching the hatch and mixing it up until you find out what they're after. It could of also been because they were line shy, only way to find out is to throw a livie on the lighter line and see what happends.
  9. There is a carpark near by(not sure about toilets) and you walk through the park til you reach a walkway which leads to blues point. One thing to keep in mind there is no where to place your rods so it may be ideal to bring rod holders. For pelagics I would fish floats and launch out a livie on the bottom for a jew. Wish you all the best and looking forward to seeing the reports to come!
  10. Top fish!! Don't worry soon you'll be pro and can teach others the tricks of the trade.
  11. Wow!! Great fish! That's a nice way to start your first post. Hope there many more to come!

    Buying Squid

I have used the frozen hawkesbury squid from tackle shops and have caught numerous jews last season. This season I haven't seen much of it about and it is quite expensive about $28/kilo. Also worth noting I bought another brand of frozen squid as well not sure what it was called but it looked quite good green eyes no pink on the squid but the hawkesbury squid outfished it consistently until i gave the other one up and the hawkesbury squid was very pink no green eyes and to be honest didn't look all that fresh. But I do know that it did work consistently.
  13. Nice catch!! Especially on that type of gear
  14. I've only been pulled over a few times from fisheries but from my experience they ask to see what you have caught for the day and do a quick inspection to make sure all fish are legal. They also ask to see your fishing license and that's about it. Generally goes by pretty quick with minimal disruption. Nice fish once again dogtooth!! your having one hell of a season!! and I'm sure your tackle is getting a nice work out as well.
  15. Great fish mate! well done!
  16. A while back they were going for $179 with a 7ft catana combo. Really Cheap IMO. But these days if you can get them for around $180 you should be pretty happy. Good reels I've got the 6500 the big btr and a few okuma epix's as well.
  17. Hey quaddy, What I like to do is put them in those snap loc air tight bags you can purchase from your local supermarket. Just throw them in the freezer and make sure they don't make contact with fresh water and you should be fine. Some people even use vacuum bags. Use a twin hook rig and either use the squid whole or stripped. To strip the squid pull out the head skin the tube and cut open so that you have a flat piece of white flesh. Remove all the internals and cut a strip about an inch in width to the length of your squid. Place neatly on a twin hook rig allowing the bait to flow naturally and wait for that magic noise zZZzzZzzz! Good luck!
  18. I have caught squid in the lane cove river however not too far from the mouth. Once there was a whole school of them about in very shallow water. However catching them has been very inconsistent and they only turn up sometimes. Hope this helps.
