  1. Hey mate, sorry to hear about the incident at work. I hope your okay and my only suggestion to you is that when your at home alone try to focus on the things you like. Spend hours googling the next combo on your wish list, or any other hobbies you may have. It's probably very hard to have a positive outlook especially with the pain, but I'm sure focusing on the things you enjoy will help. All the best,

    Buying A Tinny

Hey Bez, Where are you planning to fish with the tinny? Cheers,
  3. Hey mate, I'm no expert but here's the advice I was given when I started out and within my second trip I had my first jewfish. Gear: - A 10 - 12ft beach rod is optimum for land base IMO as it allows you to get out a decent cast(although jewfish can also be found right in close to wharfs) Anything above say 8-10kg will be sufficient in most cases. - A reel with a decent drag system as jewfish will normally give you at least one solid run. I find baitrunners are good for landbased as there isn't usually anywhere solid where you can leave your rod. - I think 30lb line is a good way to start although it is probably more than necessary most of the time. You can choose either braid or mono, it really just comes down to personal preference. This setup can also be used for kings. Rig: I like to use about a metre and a half worth of trace(30lb) on a double hook(I use 5/0 gamakatsu octopus hooks) rig attached via a snell knot. Just google it if you require information about how to tie the knot. The trace is attached to a swivel. I then attach a star sinker to a snap barrel swivel and this will go in your mainline followed by a glow bead and then attached to the other end of the swivel with the trace attached. Sounds a bit complicated at first but really it's not. Tide: A good time to start would be to fish 2 hours before the high or low tide. I find that fish tend to bite around this time and can still be around for hours. My last outing(on a boat) we had the fish actively biting over a period of 3-4 hours. I've been told that the best time is right on the slack of tide but from my experience I've found anytime around the change of tide they will be active and they can be caught in all tides but seem to be more active around the change of tide. To start off with I would probably try fishing at night or early morning. Moon/Barometre: A good place to start is around week before or after the full or new moon. Also a spike or drop in the barometre is supposedly a good time to catch fish. Although don't look into too much as I used to do because when your fishing in conditions other than these you lead yourself into believing theres no fish around when there probably is. Think about it logically, fish need to feed, I know they're not pelagics and don't feed as aggresively but they still need to eat! Bait As you mentioned squid would be the best hands down. I like to use strips of bait about an inch in width to the length of the hood of the squid. If you've only got small squid, a single hook rig may only be necessary. Attach your bait to the hook(s), half hitch the top and put it in the water to see if sits nicely. It's important that the bait doesn't spin as fish are supposedly deterred by this. Launch your bait out and if the baits good and the jews are around I'm sure they will hit it. Location I would start off around the parramatta river as there are heaps of school sized jewfish around. Important things to look out for are baitfish, structure and points. Just have a look on google maps and you will see there are several locations. The ferry wharves around chiswick are known to produce fish although may be busy. I dont know I havent fish landbased for a while. Be careful though because apparently there have been some incidents with hostile fisherman. Best not to fish alone if fishing at night. Also clean up after yourself as LB anglers are getting a bad name from the mess left around. ** All in all just enjoy yourself and experiment. If the tide isn't perfect or the barometre isn't perfect dont let this ruin your trip. Just try your luck and experiment. Theres PLENTY of jewies around. Also if you have other rods have one close in to structure and one further out. It's always good to cover your options.

    Battery Chargers

+1 for the Ctek xs 7000, they're great chargers. I was recommended it by another member and am very happy with the purchase.
  5. Is going to brave the weather and go for a jewie bash

  6. Thanks for the quick reply. I actually mean the handle knob, the handle spins fine its just the knob that doesnt spin freely. The reels never been dunked but for a while I didn't take good care of my reels but thanks to you and this new section I'm now putting in that extra care. Is it easy to get the handle off or is it best just to get shimano to do the whole thing? Thanks.
  7. Hi everybody, I've got a Shimano baitrunner and the handle has become quite stiff, it barely spins at all and is quite frustrating to use. I have brought it in to get serviced which loosened it up a little bit but after 5 outings it pretty much the same again. My question is, does anyone know how to fix it? Or can it be replaced with a new handle altogether? Any help would be much appreciated.
  8. Congratz on the fish! Gotta be stoked with a 90cm specimen! I know what you mean about having to do all the work. It's not that they won't help, the problem is they don't do things right!
  9. Hi Raiders, I just wanted to know if anyone uses or has any experience with the scotty rail mounts for downriggers. Do they provide adequate strength? and are they a good mounting option? I had a custom made mount which didn't work very well with the way my rod holders are set up. The weight was pulling from the side, when the rod holders are designed to have the load distrubuted from the back. I actually lost it in the drink as I was using it as a rod holder and trying to get the rod out of it. This all happend on the first time i brought it out as well. So now I am in need of a new mounting option and the scotty rail mount looked quite appealing as they seem relatively easy to set up. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers,
  10. That's some interesting stuff! I was just curious does that apply to inox as well? Admittedly I have sprayed inox on the top and underneath spools.
  11. I got a new shimano symetre 3000 from the states for about $125 delivered, so if your parents are going there you may be able to get it even cheaper. IMO great value for money reels, I have the old and new and they both do a good job.
  12. That's unfortunate, better luck next time!. At least you ended the day well(8 beers)!

    Lucanus Jig

Hi Raiders, I was having a look at the Shimano T-Curve Lucanus Jig rods in particular the 7'62 model, line rated PE2-4 and was wondering if anyone owns one of these rods or has any feedback about them. The main purpose of the rod will be livebaiting and throwing lures around. Also has anyone used, with or without success the lucanus jigs? Will they work well with kings inside the harbour or bay? I've done a search but there doesn't seem to be too much information about them. Cheers,
  14. Great catch!! Not bad for a minutes work!
  15. Theres a boat ramp at the Greenwich sailing club not far from the ferry wharf. Yeah it might be best to catch your bait first and then launch then boat. Best of luck!
  16. The set up looks great!! Your a very lucky man Wish you all the best with the upgrades and hope theres many fish to come.
  17. Hi, I've seen a seal in botany at molineaux point a few weeks ago. It was just in near the shore casually swimming around. A few kids were having a a ball looking for it.
  18. Thanks for all your help, I have currently drained out 2-3L and am letting it sit to see the results.
  19. Hi all, I have a 455 Stacer Sunmaster which I believe has a 70L underfloor fuel tank. After all the recent rain we've had my boat collected a lot of water as the bow was sitting on a slight downhill the water stayed in the boat. I recently have had a few problems with starting up in which I richened the mixture which has helped dramatically. Im just a bit concerned that because the boat was full of water maybe some got into the fuel tank. One other thing I noticed when I took the boat for a run is at one stage after anchoring I could hear what sounded like compressed air slowly coming out, sort of like when you open a can of coke but only much more suttle and slower. I would just like to know how to check for water in the fuel. I tried pulling the fuel line out from the motor and draning it from there but can only get a tiny bit out because of the clip. Also how would I remove the fuel filter? This may be a stupid questions but I've got one of those standard white fuel filters, does this have a water seperator as well or is it only the ones with the glass bottoms? Cheers and thanks in advance.
  20. Hi, I've had the same problem as well. I have a 50hp johnson and was previously running valvoline oil purchased from supercheap. I had leaks several times and was told as david advised that sometimes cheaper oils don't burn off as well evidently causing the leak. I have now changed to XD-100 and have only had a minor leak once when the boat hadn't been started in a while but other than that it's been good and I'm happy with the results. But as others have stated, if it's engine oil it's probably nothing to worry about although it may be worth while to check gearbox oil for water just in case. Here's a clip of the motor after it had been flushed(when I first encountered the problem):
  21. Thanks heaps Huey!!! Your a Legend!!!
  22. Thanks for the quick reply Huey, I just wanted to confirm is this the correct screw? Oh and by the way that dark oil was leaking from where the propellar is again. Is this an issue or is it just because I haven't started the motor in a while.
  23. Hey Raiders, I have a 2000 Johnson 50 hp and I recently switched over to XD-100 which solved my problem of my motor constantly stalling at the worse times. Also the motor sounded much healthier and ran a lot better. However, I had a lot of problems on cold start, it would take anything from 5-15 attempts to get it running from a cold start. But once it was running all was good, the motor ran great I don't think it ever stalled and I was really happy with it. Now I haven't started my boat in about month and I am still having a lot of trouble getting to it to start. But once I do get it started it cuts out within a few seconds. I am pumping the bulb and pushing the key in a few times to give it a shot of fuel and the motor will run for a few seconds(if i can get it started) and then cuts out. And all I see if a puff of smoke everytime this happends. Now I don't know too much about boats but it seems to me that the motor is being starved of fuel or possibly it's running to lean?!?! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Or if there's anything else that I can do before I bring the boat back because I'm doing it tough at the moment and if I can get this solved myself that would be great. Thanks again!!
  24. Hey Raiders, Recently I got a whole heap of braid tangled around my prop and havent got around to getting it looked at yet as I have been busy. I have removed the braid and re attached the prop and l I decided to start up my motor as I havent started it up in such a long time. Left it running for about 10 mins and went back in the house. I came out about an 20 mins later and to my horror I saw this black oily frothy liquid dripping from where the prop goes(Video). Any ideas as to what may have happend ? I'm fearing for the worst..
