  1. question is - will you eat them...... being the apex predator - they should be full of dioxions. Have the results on jewfish been released yet?
  2. From my database Bertram 25 - american designed, sleeps 4 adults, classic deep v 22 deg. Later extended to 26 feet. Most popular flybridge cruiser built in oz. Bertram 25 - began production in 1964. 1n 1989 it evolved into a 26 footer to handle the new v6 sterndrives. BERTRAM 25 WITH MODERN TWIN LIGHT WEIGHT DESILS (LATE 80'S). PETROL ONES TOO HARD TO SELL. Bertram 28 - became the carribean 28 when the Ameicans started importing them. bertram -International Marine, Victoria. 25 deep v designed by Ray Hunt. 28 re-vamped in early 80's by International marine to cater for top end, Caribeen reef runner and crusader for bottom end of market. 1985 bertram 23, 1860kg, 34k, ( bertie 25 costs 50k) Bertram, Pride and Carribean were all made by Melb based International group through the 60's and 70's.
  3. launch Bayview at 7:00 Check all the usural spots for zero squid and two cuttlefish. Go to F&S - and wait for tide change - 1 big salmon and 1 taylor. Move to Pill box to get some yakkas - put out a liveie under a baloon - got smashed 5 mins later, about 15ft from the boat. Spider wire broke at the loop knot attaching the baloon - lesson - dont put loop knots in spider wire. Troll the front of the Joey - no hits. Anchor on the Valliant - put down a liveie - pretty slow till it was smashed by a 66cm king. Head home, checking if any hairtail are hanging of Portugese beach - not there. Home at 1pm.
  4. haines hunter v17l became the 1750l and later haines v17L, later called 565L (and 635L - same hull, just bigger)
  5. Gearcase oil should be black - not white or milky - and not clear - just changed for some reason. Rule of thumb - dont buy a scond hand motor over 10 years old. - about the life of most occasionally used motors. Buying one a few years old, like my one year old Yammy 50, be weary of the motive. The one year old motor I bought, the seller wanted a bigger donk. He forgot to tell me the water pump housing was partly melted (possibly he did not know)- went fine on the flusher - but picked up when I immediately got it serviced to comply with the Yamaha 2 year warranty. Check engine compression is equal between the cylinders. Check for corosion - you dont want the motor being the sacrifical anode for the boat. You need a damm good motive to change a motor half way through its life on the back of a boat.

    Dioxin Jew

I can see the deal has been done -but here is food for thought. The report advises not to eat more than 150 grams of harbour fish per month. The Bream tested in Homebush Bay was 200 times over the limit, while the one caught in Middle Harbour was 20 times over- that is the concern. Now the authorities are argueing over which health standard to use - one is more generous, but dioxin testing is a relatively new science and costly. If you stick to the 150 grams, as advised by NSWF you should be safe. Problem is, the bigger the jew, the more it will have acculumated over time, so it is a greater risk. I plan to release the big girls in the future and only eat the schoolies.
  7. Two old divers do long reef each weekend in a 4.5m quintrex lazeabout - they go for 5-7k depending on the motor. They seem to have no trouble climbing in and out, over the transom. anything smaller (I had the 4 metre quintrex breezeabout) I would worry about transom freeboard and its offshore ability in close around the wash from the rocks. Look for Quintrex, savage or stacers in that size range.
  8. seen the sounders listed now for a third time - now closing on 31/10. contacted feedback for some info with no reply.
  9. Why mount it- I use a small, very old spin dryer unit that hangs on a transom bracket. I freeze the bucket after each use.
  10. I stressed to my uncle, new to boating, to get the dealer to give him a water test, show him how to launch, and ensure the quinny works before he towed it to its new home on the central coast. No - the dealer would not play ball - they water tested it in a test tank! Well, all went well, except no tilt & trim gauge working on the tacho. Dealer advised it is under warranty, and Belmont Marine will fix it under yamaha warranty. Belmont Marine, quite rightly, refused to fix the problem, and would charge for it. Problem will now be fixed by Belmont Marine at the 10 hour service, and the bill will be footed by the Southern Sydney Dealer. Moral of the story - water test your new boat with the dealer.
  11. ditto - best offshore boat from the late 70's and 80's. Used to fish Ezzy in one with a 4 litre inboard volvo petrol engine - legendary sea riding boat. watch for a soft floor and transom in a boat that old. I do not know what became of the mold - if it went to signature or stayed with whoever owns haines hunter now. anyone know? from my database haines v19c - originally in the late 60's. haines v19r - launched in 1964 by RC Hunt of Boston. (18'4"). Re-designed in 1975, with multiple changes (19'4")
  12. Here I go opening a whole can of worms again - In fishruners second sounder pic, the arch is showing a fish that is st least FIVE FEET HIGH !!! - now thats a big arch for a fish in only 13ft of water. is this correct ??? The lowrance 350 maunal explains fish arches, making this fish huge (unless you have changed the scale on the sounder before the shot). I understand that in 13ft of water, one pixtel represents approx 3cm of water on a 128 vertical under. please comment gurus
  13. The recreational sector can not have limits applied on "new species" without a TAC (Total allowable catch) being applied to the pros. This way, both sectrors get regulated to control the resource, and there are control triggers if the level of capture from the pro sector drops off. As for Flathead over 70cm - a bit hard to measure live fish for the spearfishermen - even harder for a Pro who will have to discard a dead fish drowned in his set net.
  14. I started the flint in a old quintrex breezeabout - a good place to start - better still go with someone from fishraider!. Watch your freeboard at the transom - my old breezeabout, with a oversized motor on the transom (50hp) did on occasions take water over the back when anchored up - even on sow and pigs from the manly ferry. Fortunately, most modern boats have full rear transoms - I ended up building a engine well around the back of the old quintrex giving an additional 5 inches of transom freeboard. if you take the weight of a oversized motor (or heavier 4 stroke) battery, fuel and live bait tank all up the back and you could eassily get into trouble. Dont venture too far with a short shaft motor on any tinny. Why short shaft tinnies in the 3-4m range are built is beyond me. And you will learn how small tinnies can not ride swells - they broach like a surfboat - possibly throwing you out of the boat. Small tinny weight distribution is very very critical. I remember coming back into Long reef in a black nor easter, and broaching on almost every wave. We were in-experienced, and all huddled up behind the windscreen (4 of us), so all the weight was up the front of the boat - causing the broaching - Watch what the surfboat dudes do - as soon as the wave starts overtaking the boat, they all race up the back, to stop the bow diging into the water, and bouncing out, forcing the broach.
  15. Here we go again - Pros get a 37% reduction in TAC and the recs get a 80% reduction. Where is the equality in this? It’s the lobster TAC story all over again.
  16. Be wary about trying to take weight on the side rollers - I have heard tinny trailers are designed to take all the weight on the keel - the side rollers are only for stability in trailering. Check all the keel rollers roll under pressure. sometimes those big pins bend and need replacing. I have heard stories of tinnies that won't plane properly, or ride horribly nose down due to slight indentations on the hull caused by bad trailers.

    Yamaha 2 Strokes

I am sure the 40 and the 50 2stroke are the same block. my 2002 heto50 oil injected revs out to 5500. I bought it 2 years ago on a fishent classified for 5k, fitted it myself and got the balance of the warranty (a year) transfered with the dealer service.
  18. I fished out of Summerland Pt during the school holls with the kids. I was impressed to see how well the lake was fishing - It has taken up to now for me to notice any improvement since the pros were removed. 3 crabs, 2 bream, 20 taylor, 2 lizzards & 3 flounder over 3 days -time spent 2-3 hours each morning. Kids had a absolute ball. Heaps of undersised taylor one day - 35cm the next day. Heaps of hardy-heads. Did see a huge flock of birds working above a school of fish right down the south end at Pelican Rock - first time I have ever seen surface fish working south of Pt Wollstonecraft. Finally the place is starting to fish well.
  19. never lost any on the flint - lost 2 on the spit & one on north head. on the flint, I use a reef pick on a really short wrap, or anchor on the mud with the sand anchor chained to the pick, and drift back to the edge of the reef. But you tend to lose some ground tackle and the tide picks up. One of the anchors I lost on the spit, I recovered 3 weeks later on the new anchor. As for diving on the Flint - forget it - way too dirty, even on the new moon. One of the anchors lost on the spit was courtesy of a kingie on 6kg line - clean burn through the 6mm rope, about 10 metres under the water. (I was fighting another king at the time on 10 kilo gear).
  20. Sounds more like middle harbour - with that water pipe - have taken the breezeabout up to the pipe once.
  21. Broaching - its what those surf boats do when they ride a wave in to the beach. The rowers all scramble to the back of the boat in an effort to stop the bow of the craft digging into the water. The momentum of the swell drives the boat much faster, The bow gets pushed down into the base of the swell, burries a bit, and violenty pops back out, usually at a totally diferent angle to the direction the boat was traveling. If this happens in a bar - big trouble, as you end up side on to the next oncoming wave, not the mention the chance of being thrown out of the boat.
  22. I will kick off this string on some not so memorable events. My old 1981 Quinny Breezeabout out in a black nor easter off Longy, with three people on board - broaching like a surfboat when I was a newbie to the game. Lesson - keep the crew (weight) down the back of the boat. Have come close to broaching the 1980 Lazeabout I have now - but are aware of its limitations - I dont ride swells! A mate warned me - he broke off the steering wheel when he broached one. (Tks SteveH).
