  1. He was talking about the old 2 lane ramp which is still open. The new one should be open "late october/early november" according to a leaflet in my letterbox. So it must be soon.
  2. Everyone has their own opinion but I would hook my yakka in his back just behind the dorsal. About 5mm down from the top of his back. Don't try to cast him too far or he'll rip off again. If he's hooked in the back the drag of the line, in theory, will point him in the direction away from you and he'll swim away.
  3. I have the hds5 and the loaded maps are not bad. I wouldn't lash out on the c-card just yet. Give it a go first. You will notice that as you zoom in the detail becomes greater.
  4. Thanks Captain Yes it is the pealess type. As long as I avoid a fine I'm happy. That Maritime website leaves a lot to be desired. You'd think it would give a desciption of something that is manditory. And while I'm having a winge , the pdf charts on the website are locked in a way that you can't print them. They force us to have them and we pay our taxes and fees , so why can't we print and laminate them ourselves if we want. I'm just sick of throwing money at my boat and on things that I won't use and will just clutter it up. EDIT I've just noticed they are only $6 each off the website. But still its the principle of it.
  5. While we're on the subject. Whats the go with the "sound signal"? Will a little plastic whistle like the ones that come with the lifejackets do?
  6. Thats not a boat its an ecosystem.
  7. Bonito. By the way I fished the weekend too I caught a couple of them near Botany heads. And they were defintley Bonito.
  8. I ended up splashing out on a HDS5.(I found some extra funds).(Its the sounder/chartplotter combo). As a sounder its fantastic. Although I can't say if its better or not than its competitors. I've not tried them. The sounder I had before this was 20 years old so I was always going to be impressed. I have a few minor issues with some of the features but it may be me not fully reading the manual yet. Or it may be something that will be fixed in future software upgrades. Software upgrades and the fact that you can add side scan , fuel flow meters etc if you want are a big plus. You cant compare it to the Garmin though, as its in a different price range.
  9. http://www.smh.com.au/environment/dust-was...91005-gjfd.html If they can work out an enviromentally freindly way of dump carbon in the ocean its a win win for fishos and greenies. I wonder what the "undesirable side effects are?"
  10. WooHoo. I'll be super gluing the dial to 2sm. Hi Tide in the morning and Talkin Sport in the arvo.
  11. I've read that pureed kiwifruit is good for tenderising squid too, but yet to try it myself. Aparently its the same chemical that is in milk that does the trick. Kiwi fruit has more of it.

    Steering

I've just put a new cable on my boat. What I do know is , unless you have the right type grease (Blue Johnson grease I think) then you should not grease it at all. It will gum up and stiffen up your steering and the only solution is to buy a new cable. You should lubricate the ram that goes into the trim tube at the motor with Auto transmission fluid or even 2 stoke oil. And at the steering wheel end no lube is required if its new or else a very small wipe of oil.
  13. They are putting an electrical cable from Lapa to kurnell. At the moment they are drilling down at Lapa and it comes out in the No go zone.
  14. Had a good talk with Huey (and not just about sounders) . He was very helpful.
  15. You're right , there is a huge range of options in my post. Basically it was a bit of a fishing expedition to help me decide 1) Garmin 400c versus Furuno ls4100 (ie 4" colour vs 5" mono) and 2) Is the Lowrance HDS worth the extra $300 or $400 on top. And I think I've probably already decided not to look at combo units and get the handheld gps. I've heard good things about your Furuno 620 but its a little too much for me right now. Any opinions or suggestions are greatly appreciated .
  16. I'd like to call upon the collective wisdom and experience of fishraiders. I want to buy a sounder (and maybe GPS) for my 5.5m boat. Originally only wanted to spend $400-$500. I narrowed my options to * Garmin 400c - Colour 4",320x240pixels,500m max depth,Dual Freq * Furuno LS4100-monochrome 5",240x320pixels,500m max depth ,Dual freq. Both are about $480. I've read good things about Furuno and ,I think Garmin are new to the sounder market. Basically the difference is 4 inch colour screen versus 5 inch monchrome screen. What would you go for? I was then going to buy a handheld GPS plotter ie Garmin GPSMAP76 (about $280) which gives me a GPS/Sounder setup for about $750. Or I could go for a Humminbird 767x Combo Unit for about $720 (5" monochrome,640x320pixels,460m depth,Dual Freq) Is a combo unit better than two separate units? I guess with 2 units you have effectively more screen. Or I could pay an extra approx $400 dollars and get a Lowance HDS5 (about $900 sounder only or $1100 sounder/GPS).Are they worth the extra cash and the extra grief from the ? Sounder only Combo I really like the look of these but they're only new. Has anyone who has one got any complaints? (I saw in another topic about problems with the resolution of the mapping cards but I don't intend to get any add on mapping cards). One advantage of these is that I could add side imaging to it at a later date. So many options , so many questions. Thanks in advance for any help and I hope this doesn't end up a Ford/Holden type thing.
  17. Please put my name down too. Might drag the tribe down to play in the Park while I do fishing stuff.
  18. Correct me if I'm wrong but the way I read that you are allowed to fish and prawn, just not with a net other than a hand net. "Methods of fishing prohibited: Any method involving the use of a net, other than the following: a dip or scoop net (prawns), a hand-hauled prawn net, a push or scissors net (prawns), a landing net, " You might have to read it about three times like i did.

    Boat Insurance

I had my boat insured with Club marine until a few years ago when I let it lapse due to it being in the garage and me not using it. Last week I tried to re-insure it with Club Marine and was told that because the hull was older than 20 years old that I had to take it to one of their dealers for inspection. I then asked if I could get a cover note to cover me for the trip to the inspection. The answer was no. So I called NRMA and got cover over the phone and it was cheaper. Plus my cars under NRMA and I've had a couple of claims and had no problems.
  20. Quite possibly. I didn't think the swell was that big that night.

    Fishseeker

Thanks Captain. I remember seeing a similar paravane type thing in a trout trollers tackle box a long time ago. I guess it would be meant for that. As you said though it might be worth a try.

    Fishseeker

I found this little item on the net. I wonder if it would be a good poormans downrigger. Say for trolling squid. Has anyone used one?
  23. Hooked on fishing (ch 183 tues 7.30) is my fave fishing show. He's a bit of a dork but he's very informative and has alot of Sydney content. The absolute worst is "river to reef" (on the same channel). Its a Victorian show but travel all over Australia, but fair dinkum, they couldn't catch a cold. I reckon I could catch more than them. Half the show is drawn out shots of their boat getting launched and retreived. I watch it sometimes but I mostly end up falling asleep.
  24. From Fishing World website I hope this is not a trend
  25. The penalties are massive. $2600! Far more severe than for everyday crimes like , say , drink driving or common assault. I suspect that they put the penalties so high as a deterant because the chances of getting caught are very small. We need more fisheries officers , plain and simple. To monitor recreational and professional. And also more education on the rules.
