Hi all, Just wanted to find out if anyone has had much experience with using burley when fishing freshwater dams or lakes? It seems that using burley when fishing saltwater is that common it's almost a must yet you don't hear much about it being used in freshwater. Does anyone do this often? Does it have any impact on your results? Do you mind sharing the mix you use? Cheers, Nik

I was amongst the 80+ guys fishing eucumbene river on opening. To saying the fishing was slow is an understatement. In total we only heard of 2 fish being caught in the river over the 4 days we were there. Had a chat to the local copper and fisheries and they reckon there was some localised flooding in the weeks leading to the opening, that caused the fish to run early. They also mentioned that some electro fishing was done after the floods in the river (and creeks leading into it) with very poor results.

Hey guys, Went out for a fish with a mate last Saturday with the aim of catching some yakka. After a while we caught as much yakka as we needed and switched to some small halcos as we could see some action in the distance. Within an hour we managed to land a dozen Bonito, all on very light gear (heaps of fun!). Also lost a fair few.

Hi guys, I was thinking about going out for a fish to Bundeena in the next few days and just wanted to see if anyone has been out there recently? If so, did u have any good results? Also, would anyone know the progress of the wharf rebuild in Bundeena? Cheers, Nik

Thanks for all the comments guys. It really was a top day. Mawso, I probably tried about 20 different Tassie Devils (no exaggeration either), I tried with 7g, 13.5g, and 20g in natural colours and bright pinks, orange, gold, you name it, without any luck.

Hi all, Following some great advice from some of the fishraider members, we headed out to Lake Lyall with my mum, dad and sister for a family fishing trip (something we haven’t done for about 5 years). We arrived around 7.45am and set up all the rods. We started off with a combination of rigs, including setups with both sinkers and floats. After about 10 minutes the bells started to jingle (such a sweet sound) and the rod went off. After a short fight I landed a nice 35cm rainbow trout. Pretty good start to the morning Another 20 minutes later I had another strike and landed another beautiful little trout which (lucky for her) was just under legal, so back she went. After this excitement, mum finally decided to grab a rod and give it a go (the first time she’s actually tried to fish, she’s usually happy to just read a book). After a few snags, and about 4 times of re-rigging her line, mum pulled in a great looking rainbow, just over 25cm. I have to admitted she did look pretty impressed with herself. At this stage we decided to change the bait on all the rods to garden worms as they wouldn’t even look at the Powerbait or Tassie Devils. After my mum caught her fish, my sister decided she’s get up and also give it a go. Just after her second cast, I all heard was “I’VE GOT A FISH!!!!!!”. She managed to land a 33cm rainbow. It slowed down for a little bit and we got a visit from a very friendly fisheries officer. He checked out our catch, had a quick look at our licences and after a brief chat, he was on his way with no dramas. Two minutes after he took off in his dingy, the drag on my little 6’ rod starts screaming. After an exciting fight on my 4lb gear, i landed another rainbow, 32cm. Just as I was taking the hook off this fish, the bells on my other rod start ringing. I gave the fish to my dad and grabbed to ringing rod. Again, landed another rainbow, about the 33cm mark. It was at about this point where my mum reminded my dad that he hadn’t caught a fish yet. After about another 45 minutes the bells on my dad’s rod start to ringing, he gabbed his rod and set the hook. The fish put up a great fight and did a few fancy jumps in the air. He ended up going 34cm but was by far more solid then the 35cm fish. We ended up leaving at around 1.30pm, with 7 decent fish and a few happy family members. From our own observations and after chatting with the fisheries bloke, it looks like the trout aren’t really hitting the lures or powerbait at the moment. Garden worms seem to be the go at the moment (just a heads up for those heading to the social). On this note, you can actually buy live worms from the “café” next to the Shell servo at the Lake Lyall turn off in Lithgow. Hi all, The old man and I will be heading out to Lake Lyall for a day of fishing over the long weekend. I was hoping I could get some advice, as we rarely do much freshwater fishing. I've read a number of great reports from members here about success at the lake. I was hoping someone could recommend a section of the lake (land based) that we should try. Hey Shrek, Where abouts in Bundeena did you try?? I fish Bundeena wharf on a regular basis and rarely go home empty handed. I've caught/or seen get caught flatheads 70cm+, snapper 70cm+, jewfish, tailor, salmon, bream, and many squid. Feel free to PM me and I can give you some more details on what works well (i.e. bait etc) if you want. Nik

In the Hacking I've actually had more success with fresh butterflied yakka than live yakka when going for flatties

I'd also say a pike, I do a fair bit of fishing of wharfs and have caugh a few myslef. Nik

Hi Alberto, I've seen two nice size jewies caught in the Hacking, both landbased, 1st one went 20kg and the 2nd 13 kg.

Hi guys, I was fishing at Bundeena wharf on friday night. I got nothing but one of the local guys ended up catching a Snapper which was 70cm!!!!!! Thats right, 70 cm snapper of the wharf!!! I took a crapy photo with my phone which i'll put up later. He was using strips of frozen squid. Nik

Hi James, PM me and I will get some to you early next week. I'll be going for a fish on Monday and should be able to catch a few yakka. I find them in about 90% of the Yakka I catch and I catch around 30-40 yakka a week. How many do you want/ need and how do you want me preserve them? Nik

Hey Ritchie, Why not try the Port Hacking? There's an abundance of landbased spots and there is a good mix of fish. Places like Maianbar, Bundeena (Jibbon Beach, Bonni Vale, Hordens Beach), Lilli Pilli, Dolans Bay and many more. You've got a good chance of catching bream, whiting, flatehead on most days and squid in the afternoon and you can also catch your own live bait (nippers) at Maianbar. Good luck. Nik
