Dwongrigging Or Fishing Structure For Kingies ?

Hi all again

I have been out with two charters, one fella that does Pittwater chasing kingies and the other fella, specialises in sydney harbour.

The charter that did pittwater, exculsivley chases kingies on his downriggers, he told me, that there was not much structure in pitty or broken bay, so moving around finding them was in his opinion the only way to go.

Where as when I did the sydney habour charter, we didnt downrigg at all, all we did was catch squid, then proceed from marker to marker, bouy to bouy, anchor up and drop down lines, we did o.k. I was told that the harbour is full of structure and there was no real need to chase the kingies.

Now my dilema is this....... I am looking to go to sydney harbour this wednesday, for a kingie session, the only thing is, should I take my downriggers.....I have read alot of fishing reports from people that have done very well from downrigging in middle harbour, but is there any need for it? Or are the kingies still hard to find

just trying to fill up my head with knowledge fellas, so any helpful advise would be much appreciated.

If anyone wishes to pm me, that is fine.

thanks again fellas.

Im not a preofessional or anything but i rekon its still early to fish for kingies on the buoys i rekon u should just go downrigging like everyone has and theyve all produced a good king by downrigging

Hey Kilp good to see you joined.

Mate downrigging is more productive in the harbour all season even more so now.

The biggest benefit to downrigging is the fact that little peckers wont eat away at your hard earnt squid, i lost count of how many times i caught 9 squid and 7 of them were eaten away before the kings got there, with downriggers that wont happen, 9 squid = 9 kings

Send a PM to Kelvin. he is truly the King of the kings. He is really helpful. Man he even gave away his last squid today. The proof is in his photos.

Downrigging is a great way to target kings and other fish even flathead! The HUGE advantage of downrigging is that you are not fixed to one spot. You are on the move searching the fish out. IT is like being a hunter rather than a gatherer.

I also find with downrigging you get the better quality fish. Pass the bait or lure infront of a kingie's nose and he will more than likely hit it. Downrigging is not ONLY about lack of structure as I downrig around structure. You would have noticed that the particular charter operator who downrigs fishes around wrecks. You can anchor up and fish those wrecks as well but downrigging gets rid of the rubbish fish most of the time.

It is not always the most effective way but you should see the faces of those guys who have anchored around a buoy for hours catching nothing and you come with your rigger and pull out a hoodlum king from right under their noses! Cheers Kelvin
