Hi all,

Im making up some traces with 300lb mono and have the correct size crimps. But Im using a shimano crimping plier and am not sure if Im doing it right or the pliers just dont fit these size crimps. Should the crimp be put in horizontally so you squeeze down and in between the mono, or vertically so that you squeeze the mono together ?

cheers

Hold the crimp so it is sitting tall, not flat. Then squeeze the crimp down firmly so the mono sits side by side.

The crimp should be put vetically in the crimping pliers like this

so that when the crimp is squeezed it squashes the line together.

The crimp should be crimped in three places, being careful not to crimp the

ends so that the leader is not damaged. It should look similar to this

post-2229-1172403448_thumb.jpg

Put a piece of tubing on the end of the line to protect the trace end from clips

and swivels rubbing on the trace. The crimping pliers should have a mm measurement

on the side and a 300lb crimp should be about 2.2mm but I give it a light crimp with the

2mm section after for extra security.

If crimping wire the crimp is round and is squashed with the teeth of the crimping tool and crimped

all the way to the end of the crimp so it grabs the wire.

Hope that helps.

If your still not sure take the crimps, trace and pliers to one of the sponsors tackle shops and I'm

sure they will be happy to show you how to do it properly.

Thanks guys....Im not sure if these pliers are the go as they dont seem to crimp down that good on the larger crimps . And just realised the armour springs I have are too small as well. Im not too confident in the test one I made up so might drop into one of the tackle stores so they can have a look . I would be spewing if it let go on a run, so will drop down to small leader for now that I can knot.
