Browns Mountain 26-08-07

Recommended Posts

Fished on sunday with myself, Dave (offtap), Jon (jjsydney) and Filipe onboard.

Plan was to get livies head to the 12 mile for a jig then out to browns and drop to the bottom and if we heard any reports of tuna we would troll and cube for them.

Launched into Botany Bay at 5.00am, headed over to the bait grounds and loaded the tank with yakkas and headed out.

First stop was the peak for a jig for nil, then the 12 mile for nil. so we put the jigging gear away and headed for the mountain, the wind was up in the morning and i though that the weather boys had stuffed it up again, we persisted and bashed through it hoping that it would back off as predicted. Got to the mountain and it was green as and chockers with boats and no reports of tuna on the radio, we stayed in contact with a few boats that where out wider and they hadn't turned a reel so we got the reef queen out and dave had his electric reel and we sent it to the bottom with a variety of baits.

The current was very strong 2.5 to 3.0 knots so the boat was in reverse the whole time. Then the wind backed off to nothing and over the next few hours we had a few beers, soaked up the lovely warm sun and the still conditions and pulled up 2 Blue eye cod around 10kg and 8 good sized gem fish to around 6kg on 1 drop we pulled 3 jemmies up with 3 hooks a full house.

We reached our limit so we motored home at 25 knots with a great feed in the tank.

Was the most enjoyable day i have had fishing in quite some time, great crew, perfect conditions and weather, the boat went well and 2 gem fish and a slab of Blue Eye cod each in the tank.

Thanks boys for a great day looking foward to doing it again. Very enjoyable

Cheers

Iain

Hi lian

a method i was introduced to a while back and have found to be very sucessful

at brown's and worked a treat again for us on sunday i subscribe to the big bait

light weight theory when fishing browns in most cases reasonably heavy weights are employed

to get down..........

but in fact a substantial lighter weight will produce a much better result

you will have to give the winch a helping hand and as sunday reverse up

to keep in touch with it but once down there........the fish are quickly onto it

we loaded up every drop sunday with that method and the class of fish

for us was of better qaulity averaging 15-18 kg we came across no gemmies

we have dropped our traces down to 130 lb reasonably light for there

but have experienced no problems when i say big baits we were using

full squid from the markets at about that 350mm long with full fillets of

mullet on the other hook if you have never tried that before then

give it a go you will sure enjoy the result..........

Cheers Warnie..........

Mate i gotta agree with the gemmies they are great tucker

i am a 7.2 broadbill we were drifting the western drop off

away from the gemmies it really exploded between 7- 8.30 am

got a sneaky feeling ....just about when you might of just being getting there????

maybe you were a fraction late for the initial early bite ??????

ps.... light sinkers no heavier than 1 kilo...........that be the heaviest

pain in that current though it was moving.........

sorry lian didnt mean for it to sound like i was haveing a dig at you

i arrived at the same time with two other boats at 6.45 that pro boat

was allready there......we started with the usual 4 hook rig drop

but loaded up on all 4 hooks and with the current applying pressure we busted off

on the way up on both reels.. we tried again same result.....

so dropped back to 2 hooks with one reel with boat held in reverse and proceded to load up

every drop we left at 10.30 did not want to take it to bag limit we had more than enough......

say hi next time i may off been able to talk you into swapping

some cod for gemmies....... ungry is the boat name....

Warnie...........

Hey Iain,

Well done Mate, nice feed of fish.

Sorry for being rude and on the phone last night, but the :wife: was giving me these ones..... :04::diepig::mattarello::1fish::action-smiley-073:

Where do I find all those little critters. I need a fair of few of them to put in emails to bait & tackle shops to get my seniors discount.

Hey, well done guys!

Its good to see that you can read the action and go from the pellagics to the bottom dwellers if required.

Is there any chance someone can explain the rig you put on for bottom bashing????

I have this friggin new electric reel, and i'm working on doing this Browns Mountain thingy real soon.

Sooooooooo, i'm just thinking, its great to have the reel.......... what do I do with the bloody thing

Cheers,

Stumpy

Hi stumpy

Electric reel lovely.....im still doing it the hard way....with a deck winch spooled with 150lb braid

my trace consists of aprrox a 5 mtr length of 400lb trace with a loop crimped for the swivel

to connect to....then at about 1 mtr spacings i have a dropper of 130lb at about 450mm long

crimped to the main line and with a mustard 16/0 circle on the buisness end..........

four in total down to the bottom with a length of of 60lb looped and again crimped

this loop is the connection to the sinker and serves as a sacrificial breakaway........

if snagged....as i said i prefer to go down with the lightest weight possible

and all things been equal quite often a 1lb sinker suffices for me....

there are plenty of variations which i will let some one else add to

hope to see you out there for some sensational...tucker....

Warnie.......

ps... stay clear of luminous beads.......
