South Maroubra Rocks 19/06

frankie machine

Question

Hey Raiders,

Put away the flick stick and soft plastics and decided to try for some drummer off the rocks at south Maroubra today. Got out the Alvey and some cunjevoi, and in between re-rigging hooks and sinkers (the joys of rock fishing!), I didn't crack a drummer but caught four of these blokes. I'm guessing they were red rock cods, but would like some help from raiders in identifying. If so, are they worth eating - and what's the best way to prepare and cook them? I threw back three, but kept this bloke as he was the biggest (about 35cm) and had inhaled the hook, so I would have had to perform open-heart surgery to get him back in. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mate, they're alright, you just got to use the right method.

Bring a large pot of water to the boil, add bay leaf, some celery and carrots - choped and a few peppercorns

Just when it comes to the boil, now here is the secret

Add a Brick, but its gotta be one of these 1960s red bricks with all the holes.

anyway bring it back to the boil and hold it on a rolling boil for about an hour,,,

This infuses the flavours into the brick.

Add the fish and bring back to the boil

Keep on the boil until the

brick is soft and flakes easily, throw out the fish and eat the brick :tease:

Rock cocky mate. Cale.

They're in plague proportions at my local spot and are a by catch when targeting luderick and drummer. :05: They're pests but put up a good fight! Can reach 60 cm. There's an oriental guy that also fishes there too and he always takes them if I catch I them. He'd probably have a soup or would know something to do with them! I personally wouldn't feed them to my dog. They have a clear sloppy flesh and start bleeding as soon as you pull them up on the rocks.

They've been known to be left on the rocks to die or have their heads cut off too. Some people treat them like carp... but i'm sure they have some purpose in this world of ours.

Cheers.

They are thieves!!!

They will swallow the hook so so deep everytime... rarely lip hook them..

I lose more tackle to them, than what I do getting snagged off the stones!

Saw some korean blokes catch and sashimi them... I always send them back..

Or if there are rock pools around, straight in the rock pools so they stop taking my bait!

I catch bucket loads off the stones, they are annoying when I'm fishing for blackies as they are quite agressive and if they are around they beat the blackies to the cabbage, but they produce a bit of fun when the blackies aren't on the bite, my pb is 45cm and they fight pretty well to when they get to that size. no.6 tru-turns work a treat on getting them lip hooked, but their lip is pretty leathery and you can bend a hook or two trying to get it out. Have never tried one but I have heard the same as everyone else(taste like crap).

Regards

they, and many other wrasse species command high "exotic" prices in japan, korea and many other asian countries

when made properly, they are supposed to taste pretty good.
