We noticed that things looked a bit foggy down south as we headed out of Burraneer Bay.

The further we travelled, the fog/mist became more noticeable.

Passed these guys in the mist.

It was very eerie as we headed towards the mouth of the Hacking.

Trolled through the mist very slowly down the coast.

We picked up about a dozen tailor, keeping about six for the smoker.

When we stopped for a flathead drift, it felt strange knowing that the cliffs were only a couple of hundred metres away, but we couldn't see them.

At times the mist would clear for a while, and then quickly return which just added to the weird atmosphere.

Anyway, Syd's mate John was first to get a decent fish. It was a nice 50cm flattie.

Then Syd got into gear and he didn't stop all day. He must have caught twenty legals compared to the five or six John and I caught each.

We kept about a dozen, but Syd was definately the "Flathead Master" this trip!

After lunch we decided to head back as the wind and chop was increasing.

Jibbon beach was more crowded than I'd ever seen. There must have been a hundred boats there.

Despite the fog and the uncomfortable choppy conditions, we all had a great day out, and scored a good feed as well.

I assume this was Oz day. I headed out. Got livies at jibbon and started trolling down the coast. The fog came in and it was very erie. Could only see 20m or so. No idea if it was going to clear or how far away the forecast southerly was so I turned around and headed back to the hacking at walking pace. Had to navigate by compass and sounder.

Anchored on the north side of jibbon headland to see what the fog would do. When it cleared I got buzzed by the police helicopter and at the same time I dropped a yakka under my floor. I gave up and headed home then dodging the gin palaces.

Some more quality fish for the smoker Peter.

Good to see you were undeterred by the fog. Great photos as always mate!

Cheers

The smoked tailor were beautiful Skip. You've got to get a smoker and try it. You'll never throw a tailor back again.

Any one that catches as many flathead as you blokes must have a favorite way to cook them as well, how do you like yours cooked? thanks.

G'day leonardgid

Flathead are one of my favourite fish to eat, so I don't mind catching a few.

Mrs Syd cooks Syds flathead in a very light beer batter. Delicious, but Im not sure of her exact recipe. She also has a home made mayonaise which goes beautifully with it.

With my flathead fillets, I use the following mixture to coat them.

Measurements are approximate, so vary the amount of spices to suit your own taste. To tell the truth, I vary it slightly every time I make it.

1 cup of flour

1 tsp roughly ground black pepper

1 tsp salt

A pinch (or two) of curry powder

A pinch (or two) of Chinese five spice

½ tsp of chilli flakes or chilli powder

I put the "spice flour mixture" in a plastic bag and add the fillets. Shake well, then shallow fry on a medium heat until they are golden brown. (I only just cover the frypan in oil)

Dont have the temperature too high or theyll be burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. Also, dont overcook the fillets!

One other thing, I cut the fillets into smaller pieces (approximately 10-15cm) so they are a bit like big fish cocktails. Try and cook pieces that are about the same thickness so they take the same time to cook.

If you have any good flathead recipies, let me know.

Cheers

Peter

I was looking at the photos from this trip when I realised that Syd's mate John looked familiar.

What do you reckon?

I just added the hat and then it came to me ...
