Fishing @ Bass and Flinders Rocks, Cronulla

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

My first post! :)

I am planning on going fishing in the next weekends down at Bass and Flinder's Point at Cronulla (On the left hand side of the statue closer to North Cronulla Side). It is off the rocks there and there seems to be this little bombie which gets surfed when the waves are big.

I am just wondering if the fishing off this point is any good, what type of fish are there (I want to try for some larger fish hopefully off here). I also tried some lures for a long time last week nearby and had no luck at all.

What tips for fishing this spot can you give me with lures and bait?

Any tips on lure fishing off there would be awesome!

Cheers

Hey bud,

I've wet a line there a few time, years ago.I've caught Tailor and Salmon on Pillies under a float from there and sometime you'll get Pig's there.

I have been told it's not too bad for Squid around there too.

Hope this helps a little mate.

Cheer's,

Adam.

Plenty of squid there at times.

You will get blackfish in close and the little bombie (reef) you are talking about holds drummer (so I am told)

The western side goes alright for bream and whiting at times.

Thanks - Yeh I have also heard from the back side of it if you can cast that far with metals and off a boat there is kingies lying around too.

I really want to give lures a crack here I have some stump jumpers and a big halco laser pro red head(neck). but I can't seem to cast these far from shore...any tips??

Thanks Again

What kind of set-up are you using? Braid or Mono? I doubt that you'd be able to throw the Stumpjumpers far, their pretty light, but the metals should be able to go the distance.

I am using 30lb Braid. I also have a Halco Laser Pro 160DD Red Head (Do you think I would be able to throw that far) if the wind is in the right direction?

I'd drop to something like 12-15,20 pound leader.Casting something far really come's down to the rod and casting action. What kinda rod and reel are you using?I reckon if ya wanna get something decent, there's better rock ledges to fish then Bass and Flinders.

When this crap weather clears up a bit and your keen, hit me up with a PM and we could organise a fish somewhere if ya want mate.

Cheer's,

Adam.

Sounds like you definitely need to get yourself some longer casting lures/minnows... I've got an old mag with some examples...

Try some halco roosters, and cotton cordell poppers for splashing through the wash.. they cast a mile (with the right gear) and always seem to raise some fish...

I've also used some Rapala's - Long Cast Minnows around 5/6 inch range, also have a pencil type lure same size which hasn't had much use, but has great action on the surface..

I've got an old mag with some more examples... I'll see if I can dig it up... and post up a few more names..

Larger blades, would work ok, but you'll probably lose alot of expensive gear that way...

Same as jigs or metals...

Taes time to figure out your spot and knwo how long you can let something sink for before getting snagged.. can be an aexpensive lesson, which Is why i prefer surface lures...

I agree with you 100% surface lures are the way to go! That would be great to see some of those from your old mag.

I will hit up the fish shop tomorrow morning, and grab some of the ones you listed.

Also to Bass Assassin my gear that I use is a Penn GP 8' Rod and a Penn PowerGraph III 7000 with 30lb braid line and a 20-25lb mono leader.

Cheers - I'll drop you a PM next time i'm out and about!
