boattart
Rumour has it that the State Government is closing NSW Fisheries Cronulla premises to move to a regional centre. How are Saltwater fisheries going to be managed from out in the bush? Are they simply looking at the land value? Might be time the ask the Fishers and Shooting party what they think. Catchin Jack
Found in "The Leader" newspaper...... Fisheries closure staged over a year to 18 months BY MURRAY TREMBATH 08 Sep, 2011 02:16 PM The closure of the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre, which employs more than 150 people, will be staged over the next 12 to 18 months.Confirming the move this afternoon, the Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson said it was hoped staff would move when the centre was relocated to a number of locations along the NSW coastline.' ''We are determined to retain the valuable expertise and knowledge of the staff so Fisheries NSW continues to provide a valuable service,'' she said. "The decentralisation process will be staged over the next 12-18 months, and undertaken with regard to the needs of our people and their families." Ms Hodgkinson said the centre was old, and the site had limited access that constrained modernisation and expansion capacity. A ''Questions and Answers'' paper given to staff when they were advised of the closure this morning said ''a number of options'' were available to staff who did not wish to relocate. Catchin Jack
Majority of those that work there live in the shire and relocating to a "regional" area will put them out of jobs or have to completely change their lives to keep a job. IF this done happen, lets hope they turn it into a park and give the land back to the people.

Spoont
Never mind the people, what about all the snapper in the ponds.. I don't think they travel well.... Lets hope there will be a release of breeding fish into the Hacking. It's not just the staff who are going to be hurt by this move, a mate of mine services the pumps and pipes for the breeding ponds. There must be other subbys who will have one less job when they move.
spiney
Rumour has it that the State Government is closing NSW Fisheries Cronulla premises to move to a regional centre. How are Saltwater fisheries going to be managed from out in the bush? Are they simply looking at the land value? Might be time the ask the Fishers and Shooting party what they think. NSW Fisheries is moving to Port Stevens, not quite 'the bush' and lots of salt water. It will be more difficult for NSW Fishers to access, if a regional centre is preferred either Port Macquarie or Coffs Harbour would be a better option. boattart
The current proposal is to move staff to Nowra,Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. None of which have facilities at the moment. Of the staff at fisheries how many are in the situation to move? Most have families established, spouses that work in Sydney and kids enrolled in school. Decentralising is NO solution as the majority of fishermen are based around the Sydeny area which has been confirmed by fishing license data. http://www.savecronullafisheries.net/
seacow
I must admit I am one of those left wing pinko's but the submission made a lot of sense. Saves in costs but it definitely reduces the services provided by Fisheries. Why doesn't Government consider this to be of importance? Where do I sign? boattart
18,000 people signed a petition which was delivered yesterday to parliament and supported by 4 members of the coalation including the local member Mr Mark Speakman and still the minister Katarina Hodgkinson declares she will not reverse her decision. Sounds like the same arrogance we experienced with the previous government. Edited October 11, 2011 by boattart

gmandile
Hi, I didn't know there were restrictions on Nippers or anything else in Gunnamatta Bay. Do you have any info on this? Thanks.
