Croydon Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hi Folks, With all the great weather and lack of current we had down here last week, a mate and I decided to head out wide and see what we could find in the deep dark depths off the coast of Batemans Bay. Headed out at a respectable 8.30am and trolled the shelf for a few striped tuna which we soon cut up for bait. The water was a reasonable blue, about 20deg and flat as the river. We got to our spot wich is in a little over 400m deep and sent down the tuna baits. After a wait of 10 minutes or so we decide it's time for a little look and guess what comes up??? Yep a damn good sized ling. Pretty happy with that. Dropped down a couple of more times and on the third drop we get this! An even better ling. We didn't measure or weigh either of them, but we guesstimated they went about 4kg and 12 kg each. Some damn good eating there!! Went for a troll for a few more hours only to increase the bait stocks and then decided it was time to head home to the barbie. All in all a great day out...... Dave
Yowie Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 A couple of good fish. They were being substituted for barramundi in the fish shops some years ago, so they must be good eating.
PRED-ATOR Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 thats interesting looking fish, based n the shape of the body im guessing they dont fight that well? well done on the catch
boattart Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 One of the first things I was told about deep dropping is the Uglier the fish the Tastier they are.
CarlRak Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Congrats. Super delicious, my mum loves cooking ling fillets.
Keflapod Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Well done Dave, Pink ling is an all-time favourite of mine. No doubt you were actually looking for blue-eye, hapuka and the bluddy big bass groper. Still, the ling are well worth the drop... Tony
Croydon Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Thanks guys, Yep blue-eye and the like were the target but we were pretty stoked with the ling, damn good eating. And yes the only fight happens when they're filleted and passed around the mates!! Dave
Pongrass18ft Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Always nice to venture out wide in those superb conditions and take home a tasty feed. Not too many fisho,s would complain with a feed of fresh ling Were you doing the 400m+ drops with electric or with manual reels Always look forward to doing trips out wide always fun to be had between bottom bouncincing and trolling lures, never knowing what you will take home for the days catch. Chris
J Hooked Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Very interesting looking fish. I would not have thought it was ling.
Croydon Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Hi Chris, Did it the lazy way with a mates Tanacom Bull 1000. Makes life a lot easier on the back and arms!! Dave
wchh Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Indeed good sized lings there. I rate ling times better than barramundi in terms of eating quality.
aeb870 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 I never really see many people catching Ling, excellent eating tho and probably a decent fight. Welldone Dave.
jenno64 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 So that's what ling look like with clothes on! Great feed!
