Repair Old O/b Trim Wing Holes

After talking to a boating Guru, Its time to remove the cave plate wings.

Now Im faced with four holes to fill and prime and paint.

Tohatsu grey is avaliable But my questions are;

1) What to fill the holes with?

2) What primer to use on the localy sanded back bare Alloy?

Will auto body bog and auto zink primer do ?

Why would you bother?

  Im sure you could spend money on making it look pretty again, but nothing apart from asthetics will be gained from what your planning on doing.

Underneath the rubber grommets of the plastic wing has developed some corrosion.

I want to fix it for cosmetic as well as resale. Its a hobby to fool around with my boat :1naughty:

Once the motor gets around 200hrs, Its time to renew :biggrin2:

Probably be cheaper to replace the foil with another one! :tease:

Money isnt really the object here fellas, Its only a touch up .

Let me re ask , What do you prime Alloy with on a O/B motor?

Jocool , I could not throw the old foil away far enough, Why would I want another?

There fine in some boats, It was great in mine as far as fuel, Nose up/down trim and getting onto the plane. BUT Outside when at fast trolling speeds and your motor trimmed out a bit , It acted as potential rollover in a good swell.

It took me two years to confirm my suspiction. That it was the Bloody foil.

Hope you all understand, I just want the moter to be as close to original again.

I think Mercury markets a couple of products that you could use to etch and prime the area...then use the grey for a top coat. As far as filling the holes...were you thinking of welding? Or just a bog or putty?

Livie the only sugestion that I can think off is to Tig weld the holes.

Sand back to a smooth finish .

Spray either epoxy primer or enamel primer.

touch up can for Tohatsu o/b can be purchased from dealer ship.

The metallic gray paint for late model o/b is different to early models o/b.

Im thinking your right, Gives me an excuse to set up the little inverter for Tig.

Ive got the kit for it , but never used it, (yes Ill practice) I use a Mig so its not all so new. Thanks for that, Ill prolly go epoxy primer as its a ball tearer over enamel. Just was not sure its OK for alloy or sea water.

I really didnt want to "Bog it" . I think Ill also spray the entire lower leg

Hi Livie,

Have you thought of using those aluminium rods that are sold at all the shows, they seem to use a blow torch and those rods, the rods simply melt and they liquify to fill in the holes, and from memory it is pretty strong stuff, I am sure you can find them at the boat show next week.

In saying that I have not used them so I can't vouch for it, but it looks easy to use and it might just do the job.

If it works, then prime the area as ans you said spray the whole leg, it will hopefully look as good as a bought one !

The "blowtorch" rods are "durafix". I would be a little hesitant to use them on an ouboard leg as I am unsure whtjer you would get enough heat into it for them to work effectively.

I have used these in automotive applications and have found that the thinner the aluminium (being welded) the better. I had real trouble trying to weld a cast aluminium sump purely from trying to get enough heat into it.
