South Coast Bass

Hi All,
With my favorite spots on the Nepean not firing for me this year I've been putting more effort into chasing bass along the south coast. I did a little exploring during our annual Christmas holidays, I was land based this trip and did catch fish but access was difficult and many of the better snag couldn't be reached.
Since then I've spent a couple of weekends fishing the system, once at night but mostly in the morning. Some days were better than others but they all produced some quality fish, mostly bass with the occasional EP. Only fishing the surface Soft shell cicadas, Koolabung fizzers, buzzbaits and jitterbugs all produced fish.

Elferoz777, I've never fished the rivulet. Most of the creeks and rivers that flow into Lake illawarra will hold bass. I was fishing the far south, the Clyde, Duea, Tuross, Brogo and Bega rivers are the major systems down that way and apart from the Deua(which is suffering from a lack of rain) there all fishing well at the moment.

Angus, occasionally I'll give the 6wt a workout. I'm currently looking into adding to my collection with a sage bass bluegill, that will encourage me to use the fly more.

A couple of fly pics.

fresh H2o, pm sent.

Poddy trapper, I fished the river 7 times over a couple of weeks and only came across 2 locals one Saturday morning. Surprising considering it's the busiest time of year.

I found the same on the north coast too. I think what happens is lots of locals say to themselves "I will wait till the Christmas season finishes before I head out again" and many tourists don't actually target bass so you end up getting these magic places to yourself. Plus it definitely pays to make the effort and get to unfished places and traveling that little bit further than you really want too.

I also think that a big percentage of tourists that hit the coastal towns actually live in bassy type areas so the last thing they want to chase is bass when on holidays and will target bream/flathead/whiting or go wide. For me I live nearer the coast and enjoy chasing fish on holidays that I don't normally get to chase during the year.

Just my thoughts anyway....

I notice you were using buzzbaits in some pics. I just used them for the first time on a freshwater charter in Hawaii with some success on the large-mouth and peacock bass. But I'm struggling to find anyone that sell buzzbaits in Australia! Do you buy yours online?

Cheers

Phil
