dhype
This is what an old chap at the tackle store said when he saw me browsing some hardbodies.... He said nothing catches fish like bait... What is bait i thought to myself.... Going by the the old fellows word, the below must be all an illusion! My new bream PB of 41cm on small cultiva,,, must be fake.. Flatties on plastics... fake.. Flatties on hardbodies... yup fake also... More fish on VX blade lures.... scam! More bream and flatties etc... yeap - thats right... must be photoshoped as lures surely is a marketing trick! A prawn on a lure? No! cant be true... Catch of the day? 20+ imaginary fish for the quick 3 hour session. I must be doing something wrong as these rubbish peices of plastic and metal are for fools.... oh! I might have to swing by the bait shop before I hit the georges river again! Anyone want to split a block of pillies! Cheers Trung Edited April 29, 2013 by dhype
nbdshroom
Prawn on a lure?! Now I've seen it all. For me at least, nailing a bream on a lure is the best feeling. Yet to get a jewie on one but that might be better still.
ColinP60
What a great session and nice pics. Nothing like throwing some hard bodied or soft plastics around. I have a tackle box full of them and underneath all my lures is some hooks and sinkers and all the old timer stuff lol

rockfisherman
It depends how you want to fish... It's a bias view from the old fella because he's probably never felt the thrill of a fish smacking a lure. Fishingphase
Jew Stalker
What is this bait he speaks of? Servo pillies and prawns? I thought they were there for emergency cat food when the supermarkets are closed. You learn something new every day.
redpump
Ever only caught my legal tailors on my crank lures I love them cranks to bits, unfortunately they got cut off trolling when a few sailors decided to pass through behind us . So I'll need to buy more
adkel53
I'm a lure addict. More than I can possibly use in my lifetime. Plastics, hardbodies, metals, poppers, divers, floaters, saltwater, freshwater - you name e'm and I've got e'm. Some have even caught a fish ! I rarely use bait and when I do I like to catch my own if I can (often on a lure!). That old fella just doesn't know what he has missed out on. No smelly and messy bait to clean off the boat (and your clothing and hands) when you get home, less preparation for a fishing trip and the thrill of the strike as you work the lure in anticipation. It is an active form of fishing as opposed to the sitting and waiting associated with most, but not all, bait fishing, especially from a boat. I'm hooked on lure fishing! May your casts be long and accurate. Kel
ginko
Has same story myself... I was out in Pittwater this last weekend using mainly bait but with the odd lure cast thrown in. You can guess which were working best.. Yellowtail - caught with pillies, and used but not effectively as bait. Pike - soft plastic - silver/gold paddletail, later, it was used for bait, but did not catch anything Trevally - soft plastic - silver/gold paddletail Salmon - silver metal slice <dropped a great flattie at the boat - it was too big to lift in, and it cut the line when attempting to net it - caught on the silver/gold paddletail>. It did make me wonder about just going out with lures next time.

piratesgold
Back in blighty as a kid, we always used coloured feathers in the sea, wether bottom bouncing or going for pelagics, some used sand eels until rubber ones came on the market. I once caught a good sized Pollock with some stainless steel lathe swarfe that I put on a hook as a joke, and got an instant good cod on reaching the bottom with a rubber prawn that was an aquarium ornament. 'bait' went in lobster pots or on longlines. Bait has its uses, like beach fishing where you cast and wait, but I always put a gillies surf popper on above the pillie when fishing off the beach, 90% of the catches are on the popper, but maybe the pillie puts a scent out to attract and the popper looks better. far fewer catches with the popper only, or pillie only. good days catch though ay........pirate

Yowie
Nice bream there Trung. As for the flatties, most of the photos look like the same one in different places around the boat, just like swimwear models doing different poses in a photo shoot on the beach. Your next fishing companion might need to be a bikini model to hold your fish for the photos.

mulcahya
Trung, I think you should give up your day job and become a lure fishing comedian. Hysterical post. The prawn is a ripper catch. Which reminds me. I once caught a prawn when it swam on the surface from about 5 meters away right up to the side of my boat. Bent down, scooped him up, put him straight on a hook, threw him out and caught a small snapper with him.
