0 Paikea
You did not mention how big it is. It looks like some sort of eel or immature version of an eel. It sure is ugly. The upshot jaw and teeth should be a dead giveaway but none of my reference books show anything like it. It just might be an imported species in which case the authorities should be informed. Suggest you send the pic to the museum, I am sure that they would be pleased to identify it. Please keep us informed if you do find out what it is. 0 fisho.sid
How does one net such thing? Were you prawning or something? Was it alive? this thing looks premature in development and death.. unless you have a pic when it was alive? If i had to guess it would be an eel

0 rockfisherman
As Pakiea mentioned it looks like an immature version. With sharks and rays that I've hooked, pregnant females expel they're young when in danger, even if they are not ready. Could be the same with eels. Harry If it's to good to be true, it usually is... I have a heap of reference books and not one of them has this info. Seems no doubt that it is the fish in Fisher Girls pic. Still horrible looking, imagine if they grew to the size of a Jewie, that would be your worst nightmare thrashing about in the boat. And fishergirl, how about showing some pics of the catch from a typical trawl. Interested to see just what you pull up in the modern nets.
