They are fishing in Newcastle Harbor and look to be doing quite well has anyone thought of this idea jigging for them with a lure. It was late afternoon and evening. Would save a lot on pilchards. Whats is the lure, I don't fish with this type of lure. frankS Posted July 8, 2016 Share Posted July 8, 2016 Jigging for Hairtail is nothing new, I did it 30 years ago with some success, but generally the hairtail would have to be in a reasonably large group where they had to compete for food, these days it's just too hard work for my old bones to put that much energy into it, if you are young with plenty of energy, go for it. Problem is they need to be around when you're jigging otherwise you're just throwing metal around the ocean! The lure is just a knife jig or vertical jig - 32g is what I used.
