blaxland
Caught some barracuta today about 44cm was wondering what they are good eating or what their like as bait?
New Signing
Dont do it. One of those fish that some people eat and i assume those people are very very hungry. As soon as you put heat to it you will more than likely see worms come through the flesh. Snapper seem to like it though and using the head tends to keep the pickers away

JimT
looking at Dr Google images this looks like a barracouta also known as Gemfish or Hake. Has a long fin along the top. Barracuda has 2 distinct fins on top. Jim

rickmarlin62
sorry guys but you wont catch a gemfish in the harbor..they favour 400mtrs depth..its a barracouta indicating cold water pushing up from down south..good for bait mate that's all...rick
xerotao
That is a gemfish, Please dont confuse it with a Gemfish. They are most likely to be infected with parasitic worms, but can be destroyed by cooking the flesh. I personally would not eat them
Aardvarking
Whoops, I was mistaken. It looks so much like a gemfish though, crazy how identical they look to barracoutas, despite living in different environments.
rickmarlin62
this is a gemfish..that little thing caught in harbor is a barracouta .. not barracuda not gemfish..if you have ever caught one you can tell difference straightaway...rick 1

Mike89
These guys seem to be turning up all over the harbour at the moment. A mate caught a few up in Port Nelson as well. I pulled out four on Friday night from the beach. As others have said there is a parasite in the flesh that can be harmful and that you shouldn't eat them. I cut mine up into strip baits and salted them for jewies. Looks like a good bait.
Brew
I can't get away from them. My last four trips all had baracouta catches. Went out for a troll this afternoon with a mate and we couldn't get away from them. They were at Barrenjoey Headland, 2 km off as well, Lion Island, Box Head and West Reef. Only managed one tailor in between many many baracouta. Losing too many lures at the moment! Back to the shop. This was off Lion Island. We hooked up before even closing the bail arm many times. Anyone know why so many are here and when they will move on?
