Fishing State of Origin 2018

Hi All,

Not a fishing report YET but hoping this will result in a few. If you are a New South Welshman (or Welshwoman) and have a Queenslander as a regular fishing buddy (or vice versa) and have a competitive streak suggest you arrange a State of Origin fishing comp. If you can’t find a Queenslander then maybe substitute in a Victorian.

Daz (Queenslander) and myself (New South Welshman) have been fishing head to head each year around the same time as the State of Origin. We developed a scoring system which would be relatively simple and would give a similar excitement to the league games in that a single play like a drop kick could turn the match around. Our scoring system is based on length (nose to tip of tail), oversized versus undersized and variety of species.

A couple of suggestions:

  • Decide on a 1 match or 3 match competition – recommend one in May, then June and then July but ideally line them up with the league games.

  • Suggest 2 hours minimum and 4 hours for the final if a decider is required.

  • Pick an area where a few spots can be fished or use a half time break to change locations

  • Stick to one rod each (in our case we use bream rods) – also allows some mobility

  • Bring a compact tape measure and a small note book and pen so you don’t have to rely on memory if the fishing is hot - keeping a running tally of the score is a little more exciting than adding it up at the end of the session. One fish can make the difference between being way ahead to suddenly being a point behind.

  • If you don't know them by memory have a copy of the fish size limits - that 1 point for a legal fish could make the difference

  • Have some pre-formulated pre-match banter which you can make look like it was done off the cuff

  • Print off a copy of the rules.

The following are the rules (I'm open to suggestions or improvements):

  1. Lure only (hardbody, soft plastic, fly, metals, etc) and any fish hooked (including unintentionally foul hooked) and landed counts.

  2. Fish within talking (or shouting distance) of each other.

  3. One person to act as time keeper for session. Provide 15, 10 and 5 and 1 minute warnings when nearing end of match.

  4. Any fish (regardless of species) landed gets 1 point.

  5. If the fish has a legal size and is over that legal size then there is 1 additional point

  6. There is 1 bonus point if your fish is the longest of that species of the day.

  7. There are 2 bonus points for the longest fish of the day.

  8. Any line in water on the buzzer is in play till it is retrieved

  9. Any fish hooked on the buzzer or last retrieve remains in play till it is landed or lost

An Australian Salmon (not having a legal size) would be worth 1 point for being caught and could get 1 bonus point for being the largest salmon of the day giving 2 points in total. A 55cm dusky flathead being landed would get 1 point for being caught plus 1 additional point for being above the legal size of 36cm another 1 bonus point for being the longest flathead of the day and a further 2 bonus points if it is the longest fish of the day. That 55cm flathead could be worth 5 points but if someone catches a longer fish of another species the value of the flathead would then drop to 3 points.

Like the refereeing in an actual match we do have one grey area. As we are fishing light gear in case we hook a fish too large to be lifted out of the water and we do not want to be penalised by poor netting technique we still count any fish which can be bought into reasonable netting distance (say 1m) and clearly identified. A genuine attempt should be made to land the fish thus removing all doubt.

This year we plan to do something different. I have had the pleasure of fishing with Mike89 over the last year and being a Queenslander and someone always up for a fish I have asked if he will join in. Daz will be paired up with Mike and I will team up with another regular fishing mate, Todd, thus making it a team comp. Man of the match will be the highest scorer.

For those that didn’t see it this was the report for last year’s match.
