Newbie with a tinny project

Hey, I'm Andy, I'm originally from the UK but have lived in Cairns since 07

I've had a couple of boats (V nose punt and a Bertram Caribbean that I turned into a CC - lots of fibreglassing, new transom, floors etc.) but have now bought a 4.4m tinny for 400 bucks, including dodgy trailer that needs a bit of welding.

Does anyone recognise the hull manufacturer and what size motor do I need - thinking a 40 or 50 hp 2 stroke tiller steer ? Looking to use it off shore, maybe as far as the inner GBR / islands ie calm waters mainly, for fishing obvs.

I'm assuming the frame added at the front was for a forward steering wheel ? I plan to remove that, add a carpeted floor with perhaps some storage, have paint stripped the hull outside, painted the inside white, was going to leave the outside bare but it's a bit ugly so might paint it too, probably only the top half.

Also, what's the go with the bent front deck? I'm presuming to stop waves/spray going into the boat. Should I flatten it, maybe fix some kind of curved angle instead ? Planning on adding an anchor well in the top area.

I'll try and add some pics

Any advice welcome ! Links to other similar projects, ideas, things I should add (rod holder locations, under floor fuel tank?) ,  etc.

Andy

Hey bud i have no clue what make the hull is....but i think a 50hp 2 stroke will be overpowering a tinny that size and suggest you do some homework to ensure the transom will structurally be able to take it...... a 30 or 40 might be better?

It's a Brooker. On the starboard side of the gunwale about centre from the tip of the bow to where the steering would be there will be a number stamped into the outside of gunwale, this would confirm the identity.  50hp  in my opinion would be overkill, I have one like this with a 30hp 2 stroke Mercury  and it goes OK 40 would be great as mine is fully decked out with centre twart seat removed floors and cast decks added forward steer elect motor 85 ltr bait tank etc etc etc. I have also welded another full 4mm  plate to the transom with additional bracing, so could take a 70hp if I wished but with yours as it is with tiller steer 30 would be ok.

Wish you were closer as I would love to get my hands on that thing and help you build it.

Nice project! A mate of mine had a similar tinny in cairns, he had a 25hp and that did us pretty good for beach hopping, river running and cruising inshore. Personally i would keep the framework up front and build around it for anchor well, storage etc. the leads out of cairns can give you a pretty good run for your money if you feel the need to test her out! Cheers!

Thanks fellas ! Will keep my eyes peeled for a 30 or 40 and I'll add progress as it happens.

Deffo thinking of maximising storage so may keep the frame up front. Would a underfloor fuel tank up front be a good way to keep the nose down? (Especially as I'll probably be solo a lot of the time)

Thanks Frank. I see. So it would have had a steering wheel up front there then too?

Would you recommend reinstating that piece and wheel or go with tiller steer? Presumably weight distribution would be better if I'm up front and motor at the back? Or tiller steer and underfloor fuel tank in the bow?

It does have a code stamped on the side, its A961.

Well, the project is coming along, the interior flooring and storage is almost complete, the electrics to follow.

Still not sure whether to paint the outside or restore the ali.

I'll add the pics in groups as I took them for FB

First set of pics - initial framing for false floors, Connect-it from Bunnings, 12mm structural ply sealed with 2 coats of paving sealant, marine carpet from Bunnings $39 per/m, glued to ply with Dunlop astro turf adhesive.

Carpet stapled on rear sides using my air driven staple gun - everyone needs one of these ! I've gone through 3000 staples amazingly ! I would have had an RSI if I'd had to do that manually.1556497583_tinny1.thumb.jpg.b45a953523adb852bd48cbc30d93a6c7.jpg835379419_tinny2.thumb.jpg.5bd2b12a584abbd3f30e835be436dc10.jpg1567455739_tinny3.thumb.jpg.90e1d7b078c92177e89661fa34a851be.jpg1402099296_tinny4.thumb.jpg.99872a047175f2fbab6015e9f62a8e75.jpg2076886639_tinny5.thumb.jpg.2074fbd52fd6bd7331d559851d067108.jpg1935035405_tinny6.thumb.jpg.1198f165f7ba3b518914b494e6b86462.jpg

And I picked up a Quintrex trailer for 200 bucks. Needs a couple of cross members welding back in and all the rollers but my mate has a fab business so I'm getting the steel and welding done for 2 cartons of piss. Rego'd until July 2019.

What the best rust preventative treatment to do once it's fixed ?

The way you are going it looks like you might have yours finished before I have mine completely finished.

I have been slowly ( and I mean slowly ) prepping mine to get it ready for this coming season, I will see if I can add a few photos.

Looking at your boat is like seeing mine!! I am thinking of painting my topside Maroon with white bottom, but might just leave it unpainted till I make up my mind what colour I want it.

Send me your address in PM as I want to send you some small items that you might find handy for the boat.

Thanks fellas.

Picked up a motor, 03 Merc 40 3 cylinder with elec. Start and elec. Trim/tilt. For $1500. Old guy retired outboard mechanic. Full service including carby strip and clean, new impeller etc.

Trailer getting welded on Saturday , what is recommended to paint it - cold gal? Do I need to treat any rust first? Recommends?

Andy. Looks like you got yourself a great buy there. Boy you are moving fast with this project.

You have my greatest respects.

PS wire brush and surface rust off before applying the cold gal, give two coats allowing drying time between coats.

PPS Have sent you a parcel.

HI Andy

Nice going on the tinnie project.

With my old trailer, I wire brushed the crap out of it, flushed inside and out and use a rust converter, then used a Galmet spray (Thanks Work) and since I had a big tin I used some hammer tone Silver on the whole trailer. Came up a treat and lasted the next few years till I sold the whole boat and trailer.

Don't forget to check the underside of the axle, that's where mine had heaps of rust. I also replaces all the hubs, bearings, split pin, dust cap and seals which cost about $90 from memory.

Buy a spare hub seal, I then took the best hub, repacked the old bearings with fresh grease and wrapped in a greasy cloth and put it in a tubberware container and stored in the boat, just in case.

P.s Get a sticker kit for the motor and it will look 100% better than just plain black.
