Hi all

I developed a hernia yesterday

has anyone had one ?

how do you live and hold it in until you can get surgery

I am getting an ultrasound tomorrow then looking at restraints but guessing it will be a month or more before surgery

Thanks heaps

Inguinal or umbilical? When I was about 20 I had an inguinal one. I lived with it for months - kept pushing it in and out! 😂 Didn’t really feel any pain but I was too scared to see a doctor about it because I thought they’d have to remove a nut! 😂 I misread my mum’s medical encyclopaedia- this was before Dr Google. I didn’t need a truss or anything. Eventually had it fixed on December 8, 1980, the day John Lennon was killed, that’s why I remember it. I had an umbilical hernia for a few years but just assumed I’d put on so much weight that my innie had become an outtie! 😂 I got that repaired in 2019. I was only in overnight for that one. It’s worth getting it done, especially if you have private health cover.

I've got a lump the size of a rock melon right in the middle of my stomach just above my naval that suddenly appeared.(I noticed it one day).

I thought I had cancer or a hernia and had made up my mind I'm going to be told I have a stomach tumour.

I put it off for over a year until I went in and my scans came up clear.

It's annoying though as my abs have separated.

It is called Diastasis recti what I have.My intestines have come out through my abs.Cause in my case I'm assuming heavy lifting.

I've had 2 inguinal (groin) and 1 umbilical (belly button) hernias.

The first inguinal surgery was the direct, old style incision and a fairly painful op, but the last 2 were keyhole surgery and a lot less painful. All 3 were an overnight stay in hospital.

If you do manual work, you really need to go on light duties until you get it fixed and if I recall, the doctor told me not to lift anything over 2kg.

I've included a PDF you may be interested in reading.

Good luck with it Greg.

Good luck with it. The surgery techniques are a lot less intrusive these days. I didn’t feel any pain from my hernia but after the op there was some bruising. It hurt the most when my mates came to visit me and made me laugh! 😂

@Greg Foster hope your ultrasound gives your doctor the information required to give you some treatment options. Good luck for tomorrow.

Some general points about managing your health :
If anyone has concerns about their health their GP or specialist should be consulted. Ensure you see a clinician at your earliest convenience. Leaving that diagnosis too late may not have a good outcome. Always attend the annual check ups with your specialists.

Everyone has different medical history, conditions, medications and treatments. Diagnosis and treatments are very individualised according to your health history. Someone else’s health experiences may not be applicable to you. Consult the healthcare professionals.

Healthdirect
This is a great government website that gives info on lots of conditions. There is a symptom checker or you can call and speak to a registered nurse about health concerns.
The nurse can give you advice or may suggest that you to go to the GP or to hospital.

Call 1800 022 222 the hotline is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Visit the website or download the app for your mobile.

Well it’s done

thanks for your well wishes

The hernia was repaired Tuesday afternoon,as it was open surgery had a night in hospital and discharged about lunchtime yesterday

Right side of groin very tight, no pain it just feels like I have done 1000 stomach crunches 😁

I will start walking in a few days and take it as I go

on another note

nurses deserve to get a pay rise 👍
