Rodd Park bream

Headed out this morning to chase some bream at Rodd Park on the high tide.

I arrived at 8am an hour into the falling tide with a cranka crab on 6lb. The tide was falling quickly today but was still high 1.6m when I arrived, and the water a deep brown and a lot of floating debris.

The southern side flats were very still and though I expected them to be pumping I had no bites in the first 15 minutes and changed sides to the Northern side with the Aquatic club.
There was substantially more tidal run on this side and a clearly defined seam about 15 meters out from shore where it is perhaps 3.5m deep.

Casting onto the seam edge saw the first bream of the day taking the crab on the drop and she was landed with little fuss.

A photo and release and cast back to the same place. With no hit on the drop this time I let it settle and then dragged very slowly back along the bottom. The second bream took the crab while it was being retrieved after perhaps a 10 meter drag and at 33cm gave a really fun fight on the light gear.

Another half dozen casts for no return and so I switched back to the south, this time from a high rock platform. Two more bream came out in quick succession in the shallow water, both taking the crab while it was being retrieved with a slow drag (extra slow so as not to ‘hop’ the crab unnaturally).

The fourth and smallest bream saw me break a claw treble during the unhooking. As I caught this one I’d been speaking with a young bloke who was out for his first plastics attempt with his Dad’s old gear who was delighted to see me catch and release in front of him.

I imparted 30 minutes of supreme wisdom at no charge as we ran through lure types, retrieves and tackle. As I had too when first starting he was fishing very heavy and far from structure and I am sure next stop will be the tackle shop for him.

A short session at just over an hour but great to get the bream in the dirtier flooded water and not to fish in the rain for a change.

Nice one Mike. Some good bream there!

I thought about heading to IC this morning but I ended up at Hunters Hill wharf instead. Got a flathead on a blade that was just under legal, surprisingly underneath a 'waterfall' where water was draining onto the flats from a backyard. Water was mucky with debris there as well. But the fish were around!

I'll take a look at Rodd Pt sometime with a crab. Will let you know if I'm around.

Ah good stuff, was that back at the start of the wharf by where the small boats are stacked up? A lot of baitfish congregate up there but I’ve not caught on that edge yet.

Pretty much. I’ve never seen water over that patch of sand…only been there on a low tide. I’m guessing the conditions aren’t exactly normal, so it could have been a fluke. I just cast towards the running water.

Today’s  been my most productive day ever - I went out tonight and got another ten to end up with 14 on lures for the day (10 bream, 4 flathead).

It was the Zman GrubZ in watermelon doing the damage this evening. Bream for the first hour of the run out before the flathead turned up for the second hour.

It was absolute fire tonight. I was just over the bay outside the entrance to Hawthorne Canal and it seemed that almost every cast I was coming up tight!

Highlights were a 32cm bream and a 56cm flathead. I’m not sure if they had been fasting during the heavy rains but they sure were hungry this evening 😁

Amazing session Mike! A 32cm bream and a 56cm flathead are both very nice fish! Anyone would be happy with both of those in a session.
