Aussie_fisher
G’day guys. Was wanting to go for a flick at the entrance in Tuggerah lakes. Been there many times before, once or twice caught whoppers, flatheads reaching 55cm. Most other times I caught either a few tiny breambos not bigger than 20cm, or absolutely nothing. Any tips on what I could do to catch more fish like bigger flathead or bigger bream? Was even hoping I could try for whiting. If you’re a fisho with a good knowledge of the entrance and Tuggerah lakes, would appreciate any advice at all.
Little_Flatty
@Aussie_fisher! Some good help available here for sure. Not sure what your level of experience is with lures, but I have had some success casting 65mm squidgy prawns (size 1 or 2 jighead in 1/8 oz) on the flats there, hopping them along the bottom with very little flicks of the rod, then retrieving the slack. If bait fishing, the fundamentals of fishing all apply here: good bait (e.g live or very fresh prawns, worms, mullet or yabbies), lightest line possible (for the lakes, 2-4kg) and light weights possible (shouldn’t need much more than a pea sized sinker in most situations I’m the lake).
Aussie_fisher
Thanks mate, appreciate the advice. I’ve tried the squidgy lures before, but usually don’t get much action on lures. Because of that I’m usually a bait fisherman. I try to use prawns which aren’t frozen, but it’s highly unlikely that they are fresh either, but sometimes I catch good fish on those prawns, and sometimes I catch nothing. Might try to catch the little poddies, and use them as livies for some flatty action. Was just wondering if there is a way to enter the middle of the channel, to access the flats and drop offs. Heard that if you walk to the middle of the channel there is some good action. Thanks for the help mate!
Little_Flatty
Last I was there a few weeks ago, you could wade out to the drop off from under the bridge next to the boat shed. Mostly the fish would just be hanging out within 10m of the drop off, no need to punch holes in the horizon. It doesn’t really matter if you are in the middle, just find the drop off and start fishing.
Aussie_fisher
I’ll try that when I go next time, hopefully next week. Thanks for the help, much appreciated
Rebel
Take your pick up here. The fishing is ok at most beaches. The Entrance gets a bit crowded Good luck. Edited November 27, 2022 by Rebel
rickmarlin62
The best tip is to stick to smaller plastics to match the local prawn run every time i try larger plastics i get nothing drop back smaller than 6cm and catch fish natural browns like pumpinseed or motoroil are good starters
